I wanted to see this.
My friend ended up swaying us toward 300.
I really hope I manage to catch it before it leaves theaters in the area. _________________

Guys if this doesn't inspire you I don't know what will:

I got this on DVD like three months ago. I really liked it!
Like, I really liked it! I was very suprised, how good it was, seeing as how I thought it would be very silly and bad! Instead it was just somewhat silly and very good.
I thought it was an excellent genre mashup.
Also lovin' Bae Du-na and Kang Ho-Song. _________________ o-/< --- o-\< --- o-|-| --- o^-< |

Perhaps I will post in the 300 thread! _________________

Guys the scene where they were eating in the shop towards the middle of the movie blew my mind.
Blew it wide open! |

That scene did lots of things!
Lots of things!
All very well!
First it was comfortable, then it was curious, then it was awkward, then it was creepy, then it was scary, then it was bittersweet, and then it was horribly horribly sad.
I think that about sums up the sequence of emotions I went through during that scene... |

While I concur on all of those points, I don't think it was horribly sad! Because, like, even if it was kinda tragically foreboding, it also kinda symbolized their reconciliation/coming together again as a family.
Though yeah, very sad implications of the circumstances. -_- _________________ o-/< --- o-\< --- o-|-| --- o^-< |

One of the things which struck me in the final scene of the movie was that there wasn't any long-term reconciliation or coming together again, though!
Think about it.
Think about the prototypical final scene of a family movie where it is back to the same old and then the whole family bursts in and everyone is all happy yeah!
Now compare that to the final scene of The Host.
It is still a very happy scene, but the family isn't together! However, that's just them and that's okay, I suppose, and maybe that's kind of the point? |

Actually, I got into an argument about this with some peeps last night, wherein I was all "noooo~~! they totally are together and happy in the end!"
and they were all "fuck that shit they hate each other just as much as they did before and shit"
I guess, in the end, I'd like to think that they at least were on better terms with each other, though yeah, they most certainly all had their own lives to lead and there was no one or thing to try and keep them together anymore.
In a way, if this movie was an analogy for the war on terror, the retarded brother would be the United States, yeah?
elijahdprophet: this movie is about old japanese-style monster movies being projected through a cellophane sheet of biting sociopolitical satire and black humour, crossed with "family drama" _________________ o-/< --- o-\< --- o-|-| --- o^-< |

You also forgot the straight up classic hilarious humor.
It ain't all "black comedy"!
Everything is black comedy these days so I think people don't even notice when the comedy isn't "black" anymore! |

Aslo a thick coating of surrealist gravy poured over the whole thing (I'm thinking of moments like the US Army having the BBQ).

Horror, too.
The movie had many moments that were genuine horror -- both psychological (the guy in the hospital) and physical (the girl in the sewer) -- and not just kitschy monster flick stuff.

| And while it sounds like it must be a big mess when you try to describe it, it is really a very simple and straightforward film. |

Heh, yeah, the BBQ was a nice touch. Especially since it came out of nowhere in the midst of a genuinely tense scene. The fat salaryman asking the cop how much the tax on the reward money was I liked too. _________________ o-/< --- o-\< --- o-|-| --- o^-< |

the host is great.
300 is probably shit but I'll never know because I have no interest in watching it because I think it'll probably be shit.
there was a middle aged lady behind me who laughed during the tense parts and not during the funny parts, 3/5 stars. _________________
