| Just yesterday I was playing one of the top games reccr suggested for me - Johnny Platform's Biscuit Romp. What a really terrific game. I think I'm near the end. I plan on finishing it up this weekend. |

I was suggested FIFA and Madden even though I own no sports games and the new Deus Ex on all 3 systems even though it knows I already own it for 360. The Decide-o-Tron is a piece of shit. I've been sort of critical of Reccr, but it's much, much better than this.

Since the Decide-o-Tron is an iPhone only piece of shit, that puts reccr in a potentially good position. You can launch as an android/iPhone/browser alternative and steal their thunder (or have them pick up your algorithm/stats). You need to steal from them though. Import Xbox Live, PSN, and iPhone games automatically and add an "import" and "I own this" feature. and incorporate that data into your algorithm. Do it!

Been getting a bit more use and enjoyment out of this site since tweaking my ratings and ignoring a ton of games. My recs are actually full of games I want to play, now.
A couple of questions, though: would it be too difficult to allow half-heart ratings (so I could rate something a 3.5 for example) or extend the recs list to more than only 4 pages? _________________

half hearts would take some work to implement, but having more than four pages of recommendations would be pretty easy; I was just afraid that some people might get overwhelmed by more than 100 recommendations.
thanks for your note on the King's Field series; I couldn't figure out why I kept getting submissions for cover art changes. I've settled on using the US covers and names, but with the Japanese number in parentheses. I realize this is the opposite of what I did for Final Fantasy VI, but FF6 has had at least one US release as "FF6", and I think at this point more westerners know it as FF6 than FF3.
I also compromised with you and used the console-agnostic Dark Souls cover art from Wikipedia. :) _________________

I think I uploaded Japanese cover art before just because I think it's nicer, but — whatever works best.
Aw, heh, the 360 cover for Dark Souls was fine. I mean, it wasn't about console rivalry, or anything, I just think the art itself for the cover I linked is the best of the various covers the game has from place to place. No worries, though.
100 recommendations is a lot, yeah. I'm mostly just curious about what else my list might show, but if you'd rather leave it at 4 pages then I have no complaints.
Oh, and I agree about FF6, though I guess if there's any reason to include FF3US on there it's because of the translation different from later versions of FF6 we saw in the US. Not really a big deal, I suppose. _________________

one option you have while I'm still deciding on whether or not to provide more than 100 recommendations and the best way to format them if I do it is to use the icons along the top of your recommendations page to filter recommendations by specific consoles; you'll get 100 recommendations for each console (if there are enough recommendations for that console, otherwise you'll just get every recommendation for that console). _________________

If we're going to think that way FF3US should be included because it's the only version that has the music and sound effects intact.
Didn't FFVI for the PSX have the same translation as the SNES release? _________________ Get Xenoblade Chronicles!

There's probably no good reason to get hung up on such details as far as Reccr is concerned.
I'm not sure about the PSX port of FFVI. Pretty sure that the GBA version has an entirely redone translation, that one actually does have a separate entry on Reccr. _________________

it's back up now! sorry for the downtime, but thanks for noticing! :)
the server decided to die just as my sysadmin was moving from Albuquerque to Oakland, so he wasn't able to get it back up until he'd finished moving, and even then it was doing funky things, but all is happy now.
Soo... everybody go rate Skyrim!
oh, also, I tweaked some stuff, so recommendations should be even better now! wooo! Mine look totally different now. _________________

posting this here to keep from polluting the Ziggurat thread.
Thanks for the ratings, guys! It doesn't have enough yet for reccr to guess how much I'd like it, but the "similar games" list is pretty promising:

| Been trying to add games to the site, but every time I try to do it, I get redirected to a message that says "No games match your platform filter criteria. Please update your platform filter and try again!" and a page that is asking me to filter which gaming platforms I want to restrict my game recommendations... |

hmm, have you chosen any platforms?

Oh, apparently it does that whenever you submit something and you didn't choose yet any platforms to filter! Sorry, I probably submitted the same thing like 4 times.
Also, I suggested a fix on Sonic Unleashed. The Wii and PS2 versions are completely different than the 360 and PS3 ones, so there should be a separation between those two. |

thanks for the heads-up! I read up on the differences and it really does sound like a lot, so I split it into two games. _________________

Secret new feature in development:
Games Needing Ratings. (if someone can give me a better, equally-or-more-succinct title for this feature I'd appreciate it)
This page lists games -- filterable by platform -- that are really close to having enough ratings to start getting recommended, but don't quite have enough. So, if you see something here you've played, please rate it! And if you're feeling brave and helpful, please check out some of the games here and rate them so they can start getting recommended. KTHXBYE! _________________

now that I work with people who play a lot of video games, I've come to realize why reccr failed. Apparently people like me who simultaneously play a lot of video games but are also too stingy to buy every new $60 game that comes out are very few and far between; pretty much everyone who likes video games enough to use a video-game-specific web app like reccr already buys every new game that comes out anyway, so they really don't need recommendations.
I've been trying to convince these people that reccr will help them figure out what order to tackle their enormous backlog in, but so far no dice. :( _________________

luvcraft, when you said reccr failed, are you saying that it's actually dead? I've been wondering why it's been down lately (although I see it's up right now), and I hope that's not the case. I'm a huge gamer, and I don't buy all the new games. In fact, there are a ton of huge franchises that I have no interest in touching at all while I still consider myself to be a video game enthusiast. I loved reccr.
I write for a site called Game Boyz (I didn't name it...) doing primarily iOS reviews, but I plugged reccr there almost a year ago. |

I've actually never thought of using reccr this way. That sounds like a pretty good idea. I'm not really a manic vicon hoarder or anything but I still have a lot of games that I just plan on playing at some point yet never get around to. For now, most are those are in my "Saved" list on reccr actually. Does this page sort these games by your expected rating of them? If that were the case then that would be pretty cool but I'm not sure it behaves like that at the moment. |

Thanks! I suspect we're a rare breed, Mr. User.
By "failed" I mean "never gained any traction and became as popular as I thought it would be". The activity there is super-minimal. I've never done a huge marketing push or anything, but those take a lot of money, and the investors I have approached about it don't see any value in it. I intend to leave it running for the few of us who do use it, though!

No. There are currently 785 total users (there were over a thousand before I purged users who hadn't rated any games). Of those about 60 have been on in the last month. Of the 785 only about 50-100 are friends, and most of the users who are friends have only used it once. _________________

Once we were on the topic of reccr being a failure, I was then expecting (not hoping) that you were going to say the majority of people using it were people you know. I'm glad that's not the case.
I've always had a thing for tracking progress and statistics. I don't know why. Sometimes it can be a bit troublesome because I tend to look at things from a "how can I record or count this experience," which isn't a good way to live life. I've been keeping a list of games I've completed since I was in elementary school. It started as a folded up piece of paper I'd keep on me.
I don't know what's wrong with me, but I've tamed it quite a bit.
By the way, for a while I was worried that I flooding reccr with little iOS games rather than more full-fledged titles!
edit: erm... how many more do I have to rate to have rated the most? heh |

You're at 631. The top person is at 1472, although I'm honestly a little suspicious that she hasn't actually played all the games she's rated. She has left comments on several games, though. Second place is 883. _________________

Oh hey! Somebody noticed! :)
Yeah, reccr has gone squish. The server that was hosting it was "decommissioned" (whatever that means), and while I have it all backed up (sans, I think, all of the box art), it wasn't getting enough traffic to justify finding a new home for it and setting it all back up.
Sorry. It was fun while it lasted, though, and I got some great recommendations from it! :) _________________

No warning for us to at least copy down its top recommendations for us even?! (I kid.)
It was a good experiment. I'm sorry more people didn't use it, because I sure promoted it to people. I thought it was really useful (and fun).
(I really loved In the Pit too, so maybe I should keep a closer eye on your projects.) |
