Hey, I'm working on A Thing and putting together a list of the most dangerous future years in gaming. Of course, it will end with 20XX, but there's more than a few others. Assassin's Creed allegedly takes place in 2012. MGS4 happens in 2014. Half-Life 2 is set in 2020. Any other favorites?

| From my understanding, Half-Life is set in 200X (or so it says on the calendars in the game) and Half-Life 2 is set 'about' 20 years later. Have the dates actually been set? |

I don't remember, but whatever year Homefront is supposed to take place. Any of the various insane Modern Warfare games are probably fair game.

A bizzaaaaarre incident occurred on the outskirts of Raccoon city in 1998 and the whole series up 'til 4 happens during that same year.
You might be shocked to hear that in Earth Defense Force 2017 a swarm of peepo-eating monsters descends on our planet in the year 2017. That's pretty much the only way to make me remember the date something happens in a videogame (initially this didn't even work as I kept forgetting the number anyway). |

Specifically in the summer there are viral outbreaks at both of Umbrella's facilities outside Raccoon City that are caused by a bunch of mutant leeches that think they're the facility's director. In late September there's an outbreak in the city itself. In November there's an outbreak on Sheena Island, an Umbrella Facility with a small town nearby. In December, over the week of Christmas, there are outbreaks at an Umbrella prison island and an antarctic base. Unrelated is the waking up of an heir to Umbrella who aimed to make herself into the ruler of the world using a mutagenic virus.
After that there's:
An outbreak on a cruise ship in 2001 (non-canon)
An outbreak at an arctic base in 2002
An outbreak on another cruise ship in 2003
RE4 in 2004
An outbreak in an airport in 2005
RE5 in 2009
Parasite Eve took place over the holidays in 1997, where large parts of NYC, and eventually all of liberty island, are destroyed. The monsters mostly become pests after that though, although I guess that changed after PE2 since they end up destroying the world in 3rd.

I wanted to make a post on August 2nd proposing that Capcom should have sat on (or continued to develop) the Bionic Commando reboot until late in this year.
They could have done a whole marketing blitz based on one frame of an old NES game ending, but noooooooooo, nobody ever asks me about these things. |

| Wipeout 2097 (XL in America) is a pretty great title in that it was essentially Wipeout '97, except obviously 100 years into the future; it's the only title in the series which made clear of its place in time, though the Wikipedia page for the first game says that is set in 2052. Wipeout Fusion is set in 2207 (release year +200), but the practice in putting it in the title appears to have been very short-lived. |
