About a month ago The King made a thread "Game of the Year 1986", which was pretty cool, but has unfortunately been slain by the vicious axe-prune. This is basically a remake of that thread, but this time with aspirations of producing a frontpage feature.
There won't be any complex voting system or any nonsense like that. It'll just be a semi-formal discussion where we discuss our favorite games of the year done at a leisurely pace. After a couple days I might tabulate the "results", and we'll see if it accurately represents our opinions. If you happen to miss a year, don't worry. Nothing will be really considered "final" until posted on the frontpage.
The Rules:™
- If you so desire, you can vote for multiple "first place" entries per year, which will be counted as 1 point instead of .5 points.
- You can vote for a game whatever year you feel most comfortable with. However, please note that your vote will be lumped with the game's main entry on The Spreadsheet™ regardless of the year you vote for it.
(Also, keep in mind that due to regional differences/ports, many games will qualify for multiple years. We'll need to iron out any weirdness that arises due to this before frontpaging.)
So, to start this whole thing off: what was the game of the year 1980?* If you're short on ideas, I suggest that you consult the lists on either Wikipedia & Mobygames.
*We'll get around to doing some years before this eventually. I just picked this year because I don't think any years prior would have made a good starting point (other than the VCS's launch, but w/e).

Yeah, Defender does look amazing but I've never gotten around to playing so I can't vote for it in good conscience. Same thing with Tempest (and too many other games that I'm embarrassed to mention).
Really the only games from this year I've played are Pac Man and Rogue. Pac Man is always provoids solid fun, though I've never played the arcade version for an appreciable amount of time. And Rogue was interesting, but I can't really say it was really good. Maybe it's just me, but it felt too luck-based.
(oh and I've also played Centipede and Missile Command, but I can't remember a single thing about how it felt to actually play them.)
so unless you want me to be a liar I can only cast a vote for Pac Man.
EDIT: and Defender, now.
(the wiki article for The Prisoner game makes it sound more compelling than it probably is.)

I used to hurt my hand on the arcade centipede. While that is a good quality, I have to go with Pac-Man. The Pac-Man arcade cab was my first videogame, and you never love like that again.

What the hell Centipede with a trackball is glorious. I love slapping that ball around furiously while at the same time carefully adjusting its speed and direction. Really, all mouse-based games that don't need a keyboard should ideally be played with a trackball. |

Defender.
Oh man, brilliant game.
I'd rather talk about my second place though:
Red Baron is amazing, the wireframe representation is beautiful. When you see the little spinning lines and realize they are your propeller - just wow.
It's a minimalist's dream game.
1980 was a rather spectacular year in gaming, Pac-Man, Missile Command, Defender, Red Baron, Battle City, so many iconic games.

| I think Warlords was the first game I identified as a progression... like, oh, this is pong, but I'm having more fun. But I guess I only played the Atari one that came out in 81. |

For me the list goes, Zork. Tempest. Battlezone. Missile COmmand. Crazy Climber.
I appreciate the culture surrounding Pac Man, but I never really got into it as much, preferring the knock offs that came later or the mind blowing vector graphics.

Well I like later Pac-Man games better certainly... but does that preclude them from winning retroactive awards? I know that my 198(1) self was rooting for Pac-Man in this race, having played it at least a year before the others.
Once we have a list, all of the games that can be should be thrown onto a USB drive and shared with relatives.

I'm contractually obligated to say Pac-Man, but Missile Command and Rogue both make strong historical claims.
(actually, the only Missile Command I've ever played was the 2600 port) |

| It's a strong tie between Zork and Rogue for me. None of the arcade games published in that year bar from maybe Pac-Man really hold up today. |

But should you vote because this is the root of it all, or hold back when we reach the year of the best version for a game? It is a dilemma, to be sure.

I would have said Space Invaders, but Galaga '88 is where it's at. And would hold on to Ultima until we hit the year 7 came out. Probably the pinnacle for the series.
It's hard to choose when you didn't experience this year. =[ |

GOTY 1980 = Pac-Man. Runners up are Tempest, Firepower, and Black Knight. (there was still that thing called "pinball" in 1980, after all!)
Rogue and Zork are honorable mentions in a "LOL someone made a game on a microcomputer! that'll never go anywhere but it's a cute novelty" sort of way.
Also since it looks like we're starting in 1980, I have to add that Adventure is GOTY 1979. |

The (tentative) results are in for 1980, with Pacman is the winner by a large margin (8 votes). Missile Command and Defender tie for second place with 5 votes each, with the former receiving the honor being the "Least Blue Skies Game Ever." And Tempest, Zork, and Rogue tied for third place with 4 votes.
Centipede, Berzerk, Warlords, and Battle Zone each got 2 votes.
Als, Ultima/Alkabeth (whichever), Red Baron, Crazy Climber, Firepower, Black Knight, and Battle City all got a nods.
(Note: I'm basically interpreting any statement that is unambiguously positive as a "vote", and I'm placing no restrictions on votes per person)
Now we can move on to 1981. And again, if you need a refresher, Wikipedia & Mobygames are always willing to help.

I wanna vote for 1980 too. And I'll vote for Zork.
Holy shit 1981 though... I'd have to go Ms. Pac Man because I think it really is an improvement over Pac Man. Some damn fine competition though - Donkey Kong, Galaga, Ms. Pac Man, Wizardry, Frogger...
Mobygames and Wikipedia aren't in agreement on a lot of these dates though. Just at a glance, I see Pac Man and Defender as 1981 on Moby, 1980 on the Wikipedia links you posted. |

Oops, just saw this thread.
1980: Zork, with Rogue, Pac-Man, and Defender following.
1981: Donkey Kong, followed by Gorf and Galaga.

I will play Galaga until the day I die, GOTY 1981 for me.
p.s., Xbox 360 owners, if you haven't played Galaga Legions yet you should give the demo a whirl at least. It's a great riff on the classic formula and I think it's a shame that it's so overshadowed by Pac Man CE |
