My vote for Game Of The Year: Super Mario 3D Land. This year brought back a pure joy I had not felt since the first time I held a Nintendo 64 controller in my hands and triple-jumped my way through Princess Peach's Courtyard.

Honorable Mentions:

Jetpack Joyride
Portal 2

My vote is obvious.

(Though I still wish I could have played SM3DL, and honestly feel that could have been a close runner-up.)

Need to play Dark Souls and/or SM3DL before I can vote, everything else I played this year was just okay or very competently executed.

My problem with Frozen Synapse is the same as my problem with D&D 4th Ed; they abstracted too much of the menial fun stuff away to leave just the combat.

so hey i haven't seen this thread in a while

i was bored earlier so i went through all the years listed and compiled my picks for each, plus one for this year to kick it off. lots of revealing stuff here about my tastes/history in videogames (spoiler: i'm probably terrible at videogames) (also if you're wondering why my pick for 2012 is different than what i picked for benren's thread: i hadn't played my pick for this thread yet)

here's the list, godspeed ye who still curate this thread:

Code:
1980: Defender
1981: Galaga
1982: Time Pilot / Tac/Scan
1983: Alley Cat
1984: Tetris
1985: Fantasy Zone
1986: Space Harrier
1987: Phantasy Star
1988: Mega Man 2

1991: Metroid II: Return of Samus
1992: Ecco the Dolphin
1993: DOOM
1994: Earthbound
1995: Yoshi's Island
1996: Panzer Dragoon Zwei
1997: Oddworld: Abe's Oddyssee
1998: The King of Fighters '98
1999: Silent Hill
2000: Paper Mario
2001: King's Field IV
2002: Metroid Fusion
2003: Espgaluda
2004: Jak 3

RT-55J hasn't posted in a year. I would be happy to resume this project in his place. Mods?

okay, so

1. what the fuck does this mean:

"If you so desire, you can vote for multiple "first place" entries per year, which will be counted as 1 point instead of .5 points."

i'm parsing this "if you vote for one game, it gets .5 points. if you vote for multiple, they all get 1 point." shouldn't that be the other way around?

- -

2. are we going by original or regional release dates: imagine i were to choose mega man 2 for 89, would i then be able to also choose it for 88, since that's when it came out in japan? hell, if i count pal, i can make it 91, too.

- -

3. are certain years closed off and finished voting, or can we vote all years now?

- -

4. how about different version release dates? for example: terraria came out in 2011. i didn't play it until 2013 on my xbox. the version came with a slight new update. i'm tempted to say we should pick 2011.

this also raises a question for something like contra: the arcade and nes versions are very different, if i wanted to nominate the nes version, would i use its release date, since "contra" technically came out before that? and again, which region would i use?

- -

5. significant game updates often change the game drastically: would we pick the year the most impactful version came out? i mean, look at minecraft.

the issue with release dates came up a lot along the course of this thread: for example, a bunch of folks started naming super mario bros. 3 as their goty 1988 even though most of us didn't play it until at least 1990. i think you should be honest to your own experiences to some extent, though of course this also presented an issue where i or someone would nominate a game for a certain year and because others nominated it for another year its overall presence would be diminished. it's a weird and flawed process no matter how you cut it, i think. especially with stuff like minecraft and terraria, "early access" games on steam, etc.

i dare say it's a dead thread, anyway, unless someone puts gorblax in control of it.

which kind of just defeats the entire purpose of the thread, really.

i feel like it's better to highlight games by console, since there's way less to get stuck up in rules on, there. plus, then you don't have things like late snes games competing with early ps1 games, etc.

if you're up to it, this could be a fun idea for a thread, though it'd have to be something more like "what's your top ten per console?" rather than forcing people to pick just one game, and then working out a system to merge individuals' picks into a collective result.

no way man, make people really think and pick one game and give an eloquent defense of it, so it isn't just a bunch of lists.

i guess i can't speak for everyone but personally i don't give a shit what the Best Game of 199X/20XX Actually Is by consensus, i want to see why X person calls X game THEIR game of that year.

i dunno. i'm rereading this thread & i instantly scrolled past the OP & all the "results". it was just a bunch of titles and numbers. i think i ignored the rules when i posted in it too (no offense to RT-55J intended).

while i'm throwing my opinion around: so there's no confusion, either make the "year" the actual original release date year of that game, or make it the year you played the game. personally i'd vote the latter since tying appreciation of media to your own experiences = (hopefully) more interesting & i want to see weird things like people voting some obscure Game Boy game they played last year their GOTY 2012

sure, yeah, maybe that would be better. or, you know, just an entirely different thread: post your one favorite game from this year and just talk about it. no lists, just thoughts and discussion.

I probably should have phrased it like this:

"You can give the games you nominate either a full-vote or a half-vote. Full-votes are for your top game of the year, while half-votes are for your runner-ups. For any given year you can place as many full-votes and half-votes as you wish (because, uh... I don't know!), but please just don't be stupid about it."

Honestly, if I were to redo this thread, I'd make some sort of lightweight web-app for everybody to input and manage there votes individually (as opposed to having one person shoulder a ridculously unweildly and poorly formatted spreadsheet) and have the thread reserved for meaningful discussion. But that's probably not going to happen because this whole thing was a mess from the get-go and I myself have no desire to pick it back up again.
