it seemed to include key frames, coloring and cleanup at least

to be more specific, a character designer, natasha allegri, said on her formspring that they basically sent the story boards to the animation studio with several notes and waited for a first version of the episode to be created. then they would inform the studio about the changes they'd like to be made on that first version and so on

i can't find her formspring anymore, but i'm pretty sure i'm not making this up

alright well I'll concede it, I'm just going off of episode credits and I have seen key frames coloring and cleanup all credited to non-koreans at least for more than a few episodes.

That stereotype you have about korean studios seems to be almost entirely unfounded though.

All these shows just have a strong directorial hand. It's like the difference in appearance between the average Madhouse anime and something Yuasa directs, frex.

Man, did you know that for Reign, Chung oversaw the entire animation process in situ, and all the animators at Madhouse were huge fans, so they did everything he said?

I mean, the show still looks pretty cheap in a lot of places, but whatever.

Man, the fact that that show was ever made at all is just mind boggling.

Anyway, RE: What is or isn't done by Korean studios and what determines the quality

I think there's probably so much nuance to it, and without actually working in the industry, it's hard for us to really get it. I mean, there are a lot of variables to the Korean side of things: studio, budget, business relationships, how much effort the US side puts in, who they send over to supervise, etc. etc.

oh yeah and how much fun the korean animators are having animating a thing is probably a part of it.

Apparently the korean studio that did that first short really loved working on Pendleton Ward's stuff because it was out there enough that they could do a lot of fun stuff they would normally not be allowed to do.

But yeah that's what I meant with the Madhouse example. They're a studio filled with a lot of talented artists but if they're just being rented for some property and no one really cares about the end result (like all those post Animatrix anthologies for instance) the results will be mixed to terrible.

If they're working with an artist that has any kind of vision or creativity the results are night and day.

Yeah, and I get the impression that a lot of those studios have, like, A teams and B teams and C teams and individual guys who do, like, auteur projects and stuff.

Looks like the South Korean studio that Madhouse works with has worked on Ghibli movies! : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DR_Movie

I could have sworn we made that Adventure Time thread but I'm chiming in to say I think it's hit its stride again after seeming like it had run out of juice there, for a while. There have a been a few episodes lately that are really killer.

Also the packaging for the complete 1st season DVD is pretty great.

I've found series 4 to be a bit disappointing on the whole, though I'm really looking forward to the next one. Not to exclude the stand-out episodes that were excellent though (favourites including "Hug Wolf" and "Gotcha!").

Gravity Falls is a pretty funny and well made children's television program and it seems like it is as funny/funnier than people keep telling me Phineas and Ferb is without making my eyes want to vomit. Everyone who came out of Flapjack seems to be making cools stuff. Also Disney seems to have a strangely solid-ish stable of tv cartoons suddenly.

the probably finally realised that they couldn't keep it super safe, like they'd always insisted on doing even when competitors (who they'd then knock off shamelessly) where moving miles ahead creatively in the whole of the 90s to early 2000s, though it's not exactly been quick.

Between Tron (which is at least visually appealing), Motorcity, Gravity Falls, Avengers, and that upcoming Craig McCracken show that looks pretty neat, they seem to be going in a much better direction.

I think the last Disney show I liked before the current crop was probably Fillmore

I mean I dunno about you Sleazy but Tron has always been about the visual appeal, for me, so I'm fine with how it's turning out. Is that Motorcity show actually worth watching?

I certainly agree about Tron as neither movie has particularly well drawn characters or anything. Like I said earlier in the thread the worst thing about Tron Uprising is that it is the perfect Tron Legacy cartoon.

Motorcity is the one of the most gorgeous pieces of animation on TV period right now, it is definitely worth checking out for the art alone. It's the only TV show I go out of my way to watch in HD.

plus you can't go wrong with

i guess i am going to end up watching the disney channel on my television which is a weird thing to think about

On the bright side my landlord just switched our cable provider to the one I'm actually familiar with so I'll be able to find the disney channel to watch it. My friend who works at Nickelodeon wants to hear nothing of it

did you catch the little enciphered pieces of text at the end of every episode?

spoilers:
WELCOME TO GRAVITY FALLS
NEXT WEEK: RETURN TO BUTT ISLAND
HE'S STILL IN THE VENTS
CARLA, WHY WONT YOU CALL ME?
ONWARDS AOSHIMA!
MR. CAESARIAN WILL BE OUT NEXT WEEK. MR. ATBASH WILL SUBSTITUTE

The intro also says "STAN IS NOT WHAT HE SEEMS" in a single frame, also enciphered.

Also speaking of crossovers, between the Dynomutt/Jonny Quest episode and the Moby Dick/Sealab episode, this season of Mystery Incorporated sure is Hanna Barbera Adventures

Man Black Dynamite managed to do a literal Yakub plot and that is a thing that I can't imagine a white writer would even think of and it was funny and terrible and man I am glad this show is on the air

Watched Batman - The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1 today. Pretty faithful adaptation of the book. I like their use of visual cues as replacement for the narration.

Sleazy, I got addicted to this via re-runs on CN this week, and I just wanted to say thank you. I would have missed this if it weren't for you and others posting about it!

Young Justice is still way too broad and expansive but they manage to carve out some good character stuff every once and awhile like today. Still, there probably have been more individual characters in two seasons of this show than 20 years of the whole DCAU. It makes for lots of exciting and creative fights but sometimes I can barely keep track of who is onscreen at any given moment. Guess Jason Todd existed during the timeskip. Appreciated Weisman getting in "Revenge is a sucker's game" from Gargoyles

New Ninja Turtles is actually way better than it has any right to be (meaning it's okay). The uh..remixed...origin is pretty good and The Kraang are pretty funny. The style looks way better in motion than in stills. I guess it is literally impossible to make a Turtles show as bad as the 80s show was. It's pretty cute.

man 80's turtles (and ghostbusters) is one of those things that I know I probably spent 75% of my childhood thinking about, but I cannot remember anything about any of the episodes of the shows. I guess they really were that bad. Maybe if I watched them again it would come back to me but... I don't really want to do that.

Funnily enough I was flicking through TV stations on Sky last night and found that one of the kids stations still shows 80's Turtles. It just does not hold up at all, mainly because it's just "Plot introducing new character or thing that gets sold as a toy". The episode I saw showed Raph leaving on his Birthday, getting kidnapped and strapped to some convoluted death trap by Shredder where he gets saved just in time. And wouldn't you know it, they released the death trap as a toy!

I watched new Turtles today and it seems to be better by default by having actual characters and plots instead of "Buy this thing we showed you". Also having a much more believable relationship between Splinter and the Turtles and actually have the Turtles be bickering, headstrong teenagers. Its a series with potential, if anything.

Superjail's back. Not quite at season 1 levels but as far as the plot not getting in the way and visual creativity go they seem to have taken steps back in the right direction. Some really incredible scenes

Looks like at the new Young Justice is up on torrents anyway (just like Brave and the Bold, Cartoon Network didn't take it off iTunes after they randomly stopped showing it)

Also Stephanie Brown for 30 seconds apparently

Man the Archer/Bob's Burger's semi-crossover was pretty fantastic and I appreciated how the burger of the day was Archer-level obscure

The realistically drawn kids were fantastic too although they didn't say anything
