The more I learn about what little skill I have at fightman games and what clicks with my playstyle, the less I want anything to do with Third Strike. I think it's a great looking, great sounding game, but I am not interested in playing it at all. It's kind of like me & SF4, except for completely different reasons (and one of these games actually gets play). _________________

He changed the name, huh? Somehow the development timeframe seems really short considering the stage the engine was at a year ago, even if most of the art was done a long time ago...
Should probably order a copy to put on my Doujin Fightman Shelf of Shame beside BBB1 and Ogon (and Higurashi Daybreak, and the Groove on Fight followup).

What kind of bugs me about BBB2 so far is a couple of things, from dicking around for 15 minutes:
Rather than actually trying to make the crazy mish-mash of game systems in BBB work, they simply removed them all entirely. (The Mass Effect 2 of fightman games.) The trademark Hokuto no Ken/Arcana Heart-style dash cancels have been entirely removed for everyone except Rouga, and they have massive startup now for him. Some characters still have their status-boosting taunts on the D button, sort of like a Blazblue Drive, but only a couple of the characters have those at all. And never mind the silly Art of Fighting-style power meters, or the charge that let you exchange life for attack power. Yeah, that shit didn't really work, but it was cool as hell!
Maybe I just ain't played a true Anime game in a while, but the game just doesn't feel all that flexible, particularly the huge window of time between when you start an airdash and when you can cancel it into moves and the slow-feeling specials and weird hit-states.
Oh, and I think it's really funny that they only completed graphics for two additional characters in all of that time. And based on timestamps from the first test version, before Aja packed any of the game data up, a lot of the graphics for Miyazato's Funky Crew were done years ago anyway.
(and I don't trust that training mode to be teching like it oughta -- there's something really weird about stuff like doing Ren's throw, then comboing into 623B grab that just feels wrong) _________________

I'm entirely okay with back to basics, honestly. I like basic footsies fighters and the whole "GO CRAZY WITH MECHANICS" silliness is what led us to garbage like Ougon and SWR.
Pretty sure we're running on insufficient information as far as mechanics are concerned, though. I looked over the manual and while there is information on guard cancels, bursts, etc, it also doesn't even cover some things, like Big Bang Mode (A+B+C at 3 stock) is never mentioned. So yeah. Day one demo theoryfighting with incomplete manuals, let's go. |
Fair enough, I'm just kind of worried that we're going to see a lot of patches dramatically changing stuff again, and it feels weird/obnoxious going back to a style where not every character in the game uses every button (aside from activating supers). It feels "wrong." I'll see if I can get any of the anime game crew to fuck around in this with me later.

Yeah, it took me a couple of tries to realize that it actually does combo; at first I was being sloppy and was just catching them as they teched. _________________

i'm just come out and give the scrub response here: i don't think it's particularly exciting having a single character who counterpicks over half the cast of the game and essentially requires investment in specific risky counter-counter strategies which are likely to involve completely switching up one's team to win the match against a competent player. sorry. i just don't think that's fun. it makes the game a little too obviously about guessing right in a handful of situations
and yes this is because i'm a bad player and play a bad team and don't put in the effort to have other ones in my back pocket _________________

HDR's actually come up a couple of times in the past few pages. It's generally pretty well-regarded, as if nothing else a good idea and a noble attempt at adjusting the game after a dozen years of competitive testing. Tournament standard seems to fluctuate around whichever camp bitches the most at the time, leaning toward the original Super Turbo of late.
If you just want to play the original Super Turbo, there's really no beating the arcade version on an emulator. Though I'm pretty sure you can set the game system in HDR back to arcade ST if you like. _________________

This isn't really a surprise, given that they've been developing it on PC since day 1. It was basically just a question of when they were going to have the time/effort to polish it up for public consumption in that form. Apparently they're solving that by hiring another dude to help! _________________

| The early samples of HDR's art looked amazing, but the project was horribly rushed and they had to cut some pretty severe corners. It was far, far too labor-intensive to redraw every frame of animation in that original level of quality. |
Also, and most importantly, they didn't hire animators at the outset, they hired comic book artists who lacked animation experience. And holy shit did it ever show. _________________

The wise man waits to see if they port the rest of the content over to the PC version in a free patch, as they have with at least one of the new characters already. (Game's kinda not good, but you can't argue with the support attempts.) _________________

nope, the internets are being strangely silent. |
Damn it, I asked my friend in Japan (no not that one) if he could hit the doujin shops and pick these up for me but he's busy with "orientation" or some shit, and I'm not really in the mood to pay Paletweb prices right now _________________

It looks like one of those anime tie-in fighters with jumping around in stages and a tug-of-war lifebar, which makes me extremely wary. _________________

These are truly amazing times we live in. Is there anything else we need. An XBLA port of KOF 11 maybe? |
Arc System Works really needs to make an XBLA version of Accent Core with the Blazblue netcode already. Then we will have the ultimate fightmans box. _________________

I've heard HnK called "the Japanese Marvel 2" and while I don't think that's an entirely accurate comparison, I think it gets to the heart of the matter pretty nicely. _________________
