Yeah, that was nuts.
edit: btw Neggy, I think your reaction to people's attitudes about Noah kind of misses the fact that people were less excited by the presentability of the kid's skills and more charmed by the presence of such a youthful contestant (although, I'm sure there was some amusement over that Time Up victory, too (I'd not seen the prior match)). I was fairly confident that he was going to get soundly beaten in the ChrisG match, but it's a bit thickheaded to only approach the situation from the angle of "lol the kid isn't even that good."
edit: also,

I am just a little surprised by how much people seem to care? I said "he kinda blows" and people were flipping out.
and yeah the announcers and the crowd were giving him a free pass. really bludgeoning some people, but this kid does random supers and random x-factors and you can just hear the announcers trying to find a way to make it dramatic. just reads like a disrespect to the event itself to me. the kid made top 48 or whatever, so good on him |

lol, first the racism in the IRC, and now this. I've been putting my foot in my mouth all day!
Regarding Daigo and Tokido in Marvel: most the reason people thought they would get far is because people thought the game had been figured out; wolvie/assist/(assist or phoenix). Shit, I thought that. But what we all missed was that yeah, that's probably the 'best' team, but it ignores the real power that other teams can have. We're not quite to the MvC2, 'PICK THIS CHARACTER OR DIE' level yet, though it is still a danger.
On top of that, we ignored the raw power of tech and matchup experience. The reason japan wins in sf isn't because japan is better, but because the japanese simply play more sf than american players. With marvel, the situations are reversed; your average american player has played way more marvel than your average japanese player, and this ratio extends to even the higher levels of play. Skill across games is good, but when you have this many people, grinding it out this hard, there is no replacement for experience. _________________

5:25 central and after hours stream still going
highlights: spooky on commentary, daigo playing as honda, poongko beating everyone, guy who plays with just his mouth and face doing well against daigo and would probably double perfect me _________________

Oh god please tell me I didn't miss Sanford chucking or punching something please! Those are the best.
I caught some guy on the stream kinda almost catch Daigo then choke at the end and fume and toss his stick into the chair...
Kinda pissed I'm going to miss AE finals tonight, which is weird because i'm sure it'll mostly be Fei Yun. |

He's a bit sloppy, but he does what works. If you don't like it, maybe you should be glad he made it this far; if the devs agree with you, seeing him rank so high might give them some incentive to balance that kind of thing out.
But anyway, yeah, the people I saw Noah beat weren't even trying to read him. I dunno if they got psyched out or what, but it seemed like they were mostly playing on automatic. Chris G., the guy who beat him, played it just right to punish Noah's risk-taking. Props to the kid for his general skill, but he's probably going to have to learn better strategy to get anywhere next time after people have had a chance to rewatch his games. |
