I know my opinion is moot because I don't play this shit (and I'm not really sure if I want to,) but really torn on how much ratcheting is going on. Least, this is the first time I've seen a 2d fighting game patched even remotely vigorously. It's weird, I find watching infinities pretty boring (but I do love Caps,) but I don't mind DHC?
I guess I don't mind fixing game-stalling, crashing issues though.
At least those notes didn't feel so much like a wow laundry list.
Unintended combo.... fuck that wording and mindset. |

I'm not really a fan of infinites, less for damage reasons (this is Marvel) and more for the clock-running properties.
The Capcom patch notes are a good start, though they got the direction of the Zero Glitch wrong. (Zero wasn't the one getting snapped back!) Hopefully this will be a pattern with future patches, which we all know are certain now. _________________

They are certain yeah; but of what nature? A lot of this has just been 'housekeeping' fixing legit bugs. The only thing that's been a real game changer was the Sent nerf, and that was by all appearances something they had wanted anyway, but only at the last minute. I don't know if we'll be seeing and real game balance changes. _________________

Actually, speaking of fatalities. Can you list what stages have stage fatals? You should be able to see it in Vs mode with stages that have a red skull next to them.
Gameplay wise. I suppose I'd like to see a bit more of what Kabal and Stryker can do as well. |
Not entirely sure about the stage fatalities, as I think they're a thing you have to unlock.
I haven't really had a chance to noodle around with those characters yet, but I'll have a look at their stuff and let you know. Learning characters in this game doesn't take any time at all, though, and I haven't seen any character who just seems completely unplayable. Stryker has the silliest X-ray move though.

I played the MK9 demo (ghetto practice mode by activating both controllers and doing 5-round unlimited-time versus) a bit more in-depth (practicing as Mileena vs. Johnny Cage, so here is perhaps my more charitable opinion of MK9 so far:
Putting aside the petty complaint of blocking with a button, I feel a much more legitimate grievance of mine is with the input buffer. "Fast" attacks in MK (jabs) seem painfully slow to come out compared to SF, which would be much less of a problem were it not for the tiny cancellable window on most attacks. It feels to me like you have to wait 1,000 years for your jab to animate, and then when you dial out your 1, 1, 2 (to use Tekken notation...I ain't with that FK/BK shit) combo, you have like a KOF-tiny window to cancel that fierce to roll (b, d + 4), headbite (b, f + 2), etc. to complete your juggle.
I like how many attacks can have their recovery shortened by dashing (Mileena's u + 4, dash buffer, d + 2 uppercut juggle starter), but the aforementioned slow speed of normals and tiny cancellable windows makes them difficult to follow up. Landing recovery from jump kicks is also kinda mindfucking me...I still can't figure out the trick/timing to juggle Mileena's teleport kick off her jump kick.
Basically, I want to like this game because the system makes no sense to me, but the combos are admittedly awesome. Even the crappy meterless Mileena juggles I'm capable of right now (splits, dash, uppercut, roll, 3, 4 xx headbite) look so damn cool.
I want to have hope for this game, but while people CAN learn from historical mistakes...most don't. Or at the least, they learn the wrong lessons, which is what I'm expecting to hold MK9 back.
Still, I want to give this game a fair shot. It seems very weird to me so far, but the longer I play it, it doesn't seem INSURMOUNTABLY weird. I'm waiting to play a few matches against an actual human being (Botage refuses to play with me) before I bring my full (and mighty) judgment to bear. _________________

Last night, I was thinking, "I'm so hype for MK9, I want to try out some old MOrtal Kombat again. Deception can't be as bad as I remember." And then it was and I was horrified and started losing hype for the new game. Please tell me it plays better than Deception. _________________

I've never played any of the mortal kombats after 4 except for like, 15 minutes of annihilation and it's way better than that one. |

I finally got the MK demo to work. It met or exceeded expectations. I can now go back to frothing without fear.
ALSO: How come they keep failing to use the Mortal Kombat theme in the games? That's half the reason the movie is regarded as well as it is. _________________

Probably. I'd want a lot of money for it.
I just saw something really cool on Youtube (Spoilers): You can fight hidden battles against Klassic ninjas by doing similar things to how they were fought in the originals. In the forest stage, sometimes Smoke pokes his head out from behind a tree. When he does, press the back button (select) and down, and you'll fight him. Not only will he be wearing his klassic costume, but he will use the moves he used back in MK 2. Reptile is discovered in a pretty much much the same way as before. I also saw a video of a Klassic Noob fight and read in the comments about Ermac, but I don't know how you get to them. _________________

| I like "Techno Syndrome" as much as the next guy, but frankly I think it'd feel totally out of place in one of the actual games. Besides, Dan Forden's MK soundtracks have always been excellent and MK9 looks to be no exception. On a related note, I hope they include classic music like in the demo on all the levels, it's a neat extra and it'd be really great to hear more of that MK1-3 music again. |

As far as I recall from what they said in the past, licencing is not the issue. It's that the team don't want to be sick of it by the end of development and they don't want the players to be sick of it either. As well, as Jiggeh said, it doesn't fit the theme of what they are going for. _________________

Thematic or not, the song is very much a part of the Kombat nostalgia that most will be buying into (considering the depth of fan-service present in the game itself). _________________ No sir! |

If the story mode streams are any indication, there's a ton of remixes present in the game (or, uh, at least in story mode, though I can't imagine why they won't be elsewhere).
Anybody know if it's been confirmed that the classic costumes are unlockable? So far I've heard "just the renders, not the costumes themselves" which is kind of a bummer. OCD completionist within is gonna go nuts only having Sub-Zero and Ermac.
Edit: I'm gonna imagine there's gonna be some way to get them all, seeing as apparently Jade is only unlockable via a code that comes with the Annihilation Blu-Ray that only works with the PS3 version.
Also word is that Goro is fully playable for at least one challenge of the Challenge Tower. Seeing as the bosses all have their own fatalities and at least one is technically playable, I wonder how long it'll be before they're selectable, if only in a nerfed capacity. |

According to RobotRocker on the previous page, Klassic Kostumes seems to be unlockable in the Krypt. Hooray!
HOW TO HEAR TECHNO SYNDROME IN MK9:
1. Press the Home/Playstation button.
2. Choose the song off your hard drive.
3. Set the song to Repeat.
4. Experience true Mortal Kombat
When Super Turbo HDR came out, I put "You're the Best" on repeat for the entire 5-6 hours the game was on. We were playing this in a community area at college, and this somehow ended up attracting people who didn't care about SF but liked The Karate Kid.
I was watching videos of this yesterday and boy does the final version of MK9 seem different from the demo. Damage output from combos is a lot smaller. Still looks cool, though. |

Nope. There are 100% saves up now and no one's found the klassic kostumes.
Here's a krypt FAQ listing where all the interesting stuff is, though: http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/961032-mortal-kombat/58807460
Also also: You don't have to unlock fatalities in the krypt to do them, and you don't have to get the klassic fatalities from pre-orders either. If you execute the fatality once, it's automatically added to your move list. |

I used to have the MK movie soundtrack, but I can't find the CD now.
They are already releasing a patch for the new games. I wouldn't be surprised if they patched the Klassic Kostumes in at some point to mess with the street breakers or after any exclusive kontent deals with the pre-order distributors run out. _________________

Pro-Tier Play
(this is also acceptable)
Also, Ed Boon's been hinting on twitter that the pre-order costumes are still in and I wouldn't be surprised if they put them in a patch and put them in the krypt to screw with street date breakers (As theres some empty koffins in there). _________________

Anybody here buying Arcana Heart 3 tomorrow? I had planned on it, but I decided to instead put my money towards MK9. I'll get AH3 US down the line, but my JP copy can hold me over until then. Last Saturday a group of us at a college event ended up playing it non-stop from 8:00pm to 6:30am. I have no idea what posessed us to do so, but I do not regret it. |

How are you guys settin' up your sticks/fightpads for MK? I'm using the PDP one from MVC3, and it's hard to manage tapping the buttons then reaching over to the RT button for block.
Doesn't help that I haven't played an MK game in ages and have no idea what the proper setup would be. May just use the standard 360 pad instead. |

Okay guys I have this game. I will now play it. I've heard various reports on the quality of online play pre-official release and reasons why, but if anyone wants to try out online, my PSN is PooglyWoogly. I'm on the US East coast, for regional reference.
Edit: I just saw the Gamespy logo during startup. I didn't know people still used Gamespy for online code. |
