I added everyone in the thread.
The 3D is gorgeous. Makes way more of an impression on me than the upgrade of games to HD. I adore Pilot Wings. I played DQVI on it and was shocked by how colorful it was. (I've been using a launch DS. It is dark.) I am going to take 3D pictures of boobies.
When playing a DS game, the analog slider acts as a D-Pad, but it doesn't work very well. The transition from vertical to diagonal button presses isn't smooth enough to feel right.
Agree that the motion controls on any 3D games is stupid. The window for breaking the 3D effect is larger than some people would have you believe, and in fact it comes back if you tilt further (it sort of comes and goes in waves as you tilt the screen), but motion controls are definitely a no.
Really curious how the battery is gonna do when it comes to VC games. As it stands it is almost exactly as long with 3DS games as my ancient DS is running normally, which is fine for all of my current uses. _________________

So yeah, my 3DS was just defective. Good thing I checked other ones and saw the 3D just fine on them. Glad to see it was my 3DS and not my eyes, one of those is a hell of a lot easier to exchange than the other.
Pilotwings is considerably more entertaining when you can see the 3D, game really does work better as a tech demo than a 2D game. Still a little bland, but yeah. |
I'm really glad it worked out for you!
I think the Pilotwings missions are more fun than the original's, but not as good as Pilotwings 64. I still think it's fair to say there are no bad Pilotwings games. Unfortunately I don't care about the rest of the launch games. I never played Rayman 2. Should I bother? _________________

Talk about lonely game. |
You know, I have never been happy with the features that were obviously built for Japanese audiences and have no chance of working in the states. The DS Dragon Quest games are another major offender on this front.
Luckily I don't care about puzzle pieces or whatever the reward is. _________________

Yes, homebrewers have access. The thing that 3Ds the 3D is a parallax barrier built into the screen. All this does is block one eye from seeing some pixels, and the other eye from seeing the others. Any programmer can design a game to split into multiple images, though I imagine adding depth-slider functionality is trickier, and testing would be a pain in the ass.
One thing I've noticed playing Pilotwings is that some of what I've mistaken for ghosting was actually my eyes treating the depth as real. When I look into the distance, my character splits, and when I look closer, the horizon splits. I'm just fascinated that it tricks my vision so well. _________________

It seems that if you walk over 100,000 steps in a day, it just rolls over and fails to count it. I'm pretty sure that 4-hour venture was more than 20,000 steps! _________________

I might have been wrong about the step rollover. Some people are estimating 5 miles = 10,000 steps, and that roughly works. I was just sure it was more.
I caved and got Rayman 3D. Since this is my first time playing it, I'm actually kind of impressed. It also does a convincing objects-popping-out-at-you effect. And it's fun to just move around in a 3D environment. The downside: a lot of sprites look out of place. They really should have redone them as 3D objects. _________________

I never saw the Wii's VC browser, but I think this one is atrocious. The categories are so bizarre. Instead of "DSIware" you get "DSIware favorites"--many of the games available are excluded, and as far as I can tell, impossible to find unless you search for them with the search bar. They're otherwise laid out into similar bizarre categories--essential games, 2-player games, 4-player games. Why can't I just find a list of games?
And the updates to what's available seems pretty lousy too. For instance, did you know the excellent GB classic Donkey Kong came out today? I couldn't find it in the Virtual Console store, or under Recent Arrivals, but when I search for it, it's there. However, the goddamn trailer for Green Lantern gets front-page status.
(Edit: never mind, it just showed up on my frontpage after restarting the store. And now there are a bunch of new categories, including "Nuthin' But Action" ???)
Also, I can't find (in the store or anywhere else!) a list of games that come out each week. I found Donkey Kong through Wikipedia, since I knew the store supposedly updates every Thursday. Anyone know where to look? I'm holding out for Dragon Crystal, if they deliver it to the states anyway. I could use a good, painful roguelike.
Gotta say I'm happy to have a portable Cave Story now. No way I was gonna wait for Cave Story 3D, which looks atrocious. _________________

In the mean time, I'd appreciate some advice from experienced DSIware people on what's worth my time of the following:
Shantae
Dark Void Zero
Legends of Exidia
GG Series D-TANK (vs other GG series games)
Um, any other recommendations, since I can't actually find what games are available by browsing the store and I have to literally know the game and search for the game to find it? _________________

Also, any opinions on the Anonymous Notes games? They look cute, but also like they could go wrong easily. _________________

I didn't care about last week's Virtual Console releases, but today we get Xevious 3D! I'm pretty happy about it, actually. It adds a strange difficulty to the game, because my eyes really do have to focus on either the sky or the ground as different entities, making me miss bullets sometimes. I think it's neat! Developers should take advantage of this strange trait--they can now play with human eyesight in a way they haven't before, and really force you to focus on certain things over others, the way movies do. This is much better than Excitebike.
Next week brings Pac-Man & Galaga Dimensions. It apparently has Pac-Man CE on it, which I've never played, so I'm also excited about that. Not enough to make up my disappointment for MML3, but enough that I'm still not bummed I bought the system. _________________

Yeah, I'd say it's worth the bump. Looks like I'm gonna get some free games--some of which I actually want.
Meanwhile, Pac-Man & Galaga Dimensions is out. The Pac-Man game kind of reminds me of Kirby Canvas Curse. Levels encourage careful speedrunning. I like it. _________________

So, for those of you who have a 3DS and are sad about the lack of games, IF YOU HAVEN'T BOUGHT PUSHMO DO IT RIGHT THE FUCK NOW.
You will have to get through some handholding at the beginning, but it is amazingly worth it. I haven't been stuck so badly, so often in a puzzle game for a long time. This game regularly makes me feel like an idiot. I love it. _________________

Metal Gear Solid 3 demo up in the eshop.
The controls are unbearable. It is unplayable, I couldn't get past the third screen without turning it off in disgust. How disappointing. _________________

I liked Revelations. Gonna tear through it on hard mode now. I'd love to go through raid mode with someone, if anyone's up for it. I played the first stage and it was goofy retarded action fun. _________________

I will let you know when I unlock Raid Mode and we can give it a shot. |
If you beat the game it should be unlocked. Just go into the missions screen and hit the A button over any mission that has an exclamation point to claim the reward. _________________

Oh, yes, I forgot about the software rankings. Let's see...
1. Dragon Quest V DS, no surprise there, I got one of every monster and raised Starkers and Rebjorn to level 99. 83 hours, whew.
2. Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2
3. Pushmo, at 38 hours. These puzzles really stump me sometimes :(
4. Super Mario 3D Land, at 31 hours. I played through it 4 times.
Only two of these are 3DS games. Oh well. Resident Evil Revelations will push itself up there. Raid mode is very addicting. I have some complaints about it (the leveling system doesn't really add anything except the ability to easily S-rank the stages with lower-level enemies), but goddamn what a good addition. _________________

I haven't played any of these games on a gba for comparison, but I had to straight-up delete Yoshi's Island since the audio was so offensively horrid. Might just be that game. _________________

Yeah, it was like someone took the SNES game and hyper limited all the audio. "Fuzzy" doesn't do it justice, it sounded like someone had taken bits out of the music and replaced them with loud static. I don't know if this game had even worse sound on the GBA. _________________

Mario 3DS is the best game Nintendo has published since Mother 3. It was worth the price of the system for me. Kid Icarus and Mario Kart were both disappointing.

Haven't played Mario Kart. I'll say that I enjoyed Kid Icarus, but it has an awful flaw: the weapon system is so random (and the fusing system so underpowered) that, should you ever want to play through the 9.0 difficulty, you will find yourself in a horrible grindfest to end them all. Without online weapon trading, there's just no way most players will find one of the weapons necessary to take it on.
That said, it's nice that the 9.0 difficulty is so challenging. It's just not quite in the right way--the dodge mechanism isn't refined enough for the pressure the game puts on you.
The multiplayer is nice. Takes much less effort to find a winning weapon, there.
I would recommend it to 3DS owners, still. Play around 6.0 difficulty and you should have a nice time. The game is very 90s, don't expect anything revolutionary (or even modern). _________________

The Final Fantasy rhythm game is cute and addicting, if you like FF music. Denpamen is a cute Dragon Quest clone, but all dungeons. Heroes of Ruin has pretty smooth multiplayer. I still like this thing. _________________

Kid Icarus online is pretty sweet, as long as you don't run into someone abusing the Eyeball Orb weapon thingy, which can home in on people and travel through walls. Otherwise it's basically a kind of 3D smash brothers. Use the right items and weapons and don't suck. _________________

Eyetrack Orbitars, after I looked it up. Here's a video showing off how the homing-through-walls can trump about anything in multiplayer. (I think you actually need slip shot to shoot through walls like that.) In single player they home a little too much, and tend to wrap around enemies that are moving sideways. Also their range is terrible, and range is more useful in single player.
The weapon variations are overwhelmingly for multiplayer. Notice also that most of the attributes on a weapon are totally useless in high difficulty in solo, while those that are useful for that are totally useless in multiplayer. Specifically, for single player, ALL you need is more HP, more defense, more speed, and more power. (A bonus to healing items is nice too.) In multiplayer, a weapon with only those abilities will get probably you killed fast. For multiplayer you really want a status effect like Freezing or Confusion, attack bonuses on specific moves (especially directional dash ch. shot), knockback defense or recover, and a boost to effect duration since you'll be using a lot of powers.
Also notice that many powers are useless in solo. I never in a solo campaign used jump glide, angelic missile, mega laser, black hole, land mine, heavenly light, slip shot, or any status effect attack (including eggplant). All of these are really, really, really useful in multiplayer.
My final multiplayer fighter a burning palm with freeze and a great forward dash charge shot boost, and relied on Aries Armor to keep my character alive as long as possible, switching to Libra Sponge when my health was lower. Black Hole + the weapon's freeze effect were enough to keep a lot of players still long enough to completely cream them, and Libra Sponge + the ch. shot boost were enough to kill many of them in just two hits that way. I was the top or second player in matches about 70% of the time with that strategy. It's a shame the weapon fusing system is so horribly obtuse that it's extremely difficult to get a decent multiplayer weapon without just playing on level 9 difficulty. _________________

You can usually expect hackers to keep ahead of firmware, though whether those hackers happen to be 2i developers/users is an open question. What happened with the PSP on this front? That's probably the closest comparison. _________________

Does it? Before I posted I tried to find confirmation of this and most places I found seem to agree that this is a completely unfounded rumor, that Nintendo threatened the ability to brick systems but hasn't ever done it. Consensus seems to be that they were blowing smoke. Some confirmation of bricked systems would be nice. _________________

I found the proprietary DSTwo emulator worked at a higher speed and had better compatibility generally than SNEmulDS, and there's an update called CATSFC that's supposedly even better. I just found the screen cropping obnoxious, and compatibility was still low. I haven't tried any of this on the 3DS, maybe it's better, but I've got a fancy schmancy android tablet for emulation now so I don't care to bother checking it out. In a few days, maybe Remote can report back. _________________

Most of the 3ds eshop releases are game gear or gb, with a small amount of nes. It's like they're saying, "This is a different virtual console, for handheld stuff because you're playing a handheld!" But then the NES games just defeat that and it's stupid to begin with. _________________

Hey! New Animal Crossing is out! I bought it on the eshop.
The only other one I've played is Wild World and this is a clear improvement. It's thus far almost the same game, though. I won't really be able to judge the new content until I can properly unlock it--by getting all the townspeople to like me. Then I can go about actually directing my town as its mayor. It'll take a while.
Kinda nice that the game gives you a non-multiplayer way to get non-native fruit very quickly. _________________
