Yep, Demon's Souls had an ugly HUD not to mention awkward controls. Also a bit disappointed they didn't realize any of that needed reworking. Well, it's always more likely for sequels to build on strengths rather than fix flaws, I suppose.

Awkward controls, really? Did you want it to be DMC or something?

I'm just talking about some of the secondary controls like switching between healing items, spell wands and one/two-handed wielding. Also the target-locking system is pretty poor, but fortunately it gives the option of mostly just not using that. So, not showstoppers but definitely things I'd like to see fixed.

Pretty simple stuff, I think, but hm.

I've never been bothered by the HUD, either. It's very plain, but not as obtrusive as one might think.

I think the controls are sort of a From trademark, plus it has a lovely double effect. They are cluttered but functional to complement a game that cannot be paused, and it adds to the tension of fumbling between weapons in the heat of battle, much like how anyone would realistically. I'm not a huge fan of realism, but I love metagaming ideas like that.

Fuck yeah, more of the same!

I bet I'll do something stupid on my first playthrough that will lock me out forever from that solaire armor.

First time I ever pre-ordered anything.
Even ponied up for the first day delivery guarantee thing amazon does.
Also marked November as unavailable in my calendar.

Berate me if I post ITT again before it's out.

I preordered as well, and I will preorder Armored Core V if they do a similar deal.

I should add I got it for the 360 mainly because of voice chat. Maybe we should poll and see what people will get which version?

I preordered the PS3 version. Mainly since, uh, I don't own a 360 (yet), but I'd probably go with that anyway since I played Demon's and I guess it will feel comfortable that way... but more so because I'm sticking with my insistence upon treating it as a lonely game with a haunting approach to meta-multiplayer. Not gonna be trying to play with friends.

I'm getting it for PS3 because for some crazy reason I view sony as the lesser of two evils.

Also, it's already paid off.

As for myself, I will totally be down for multiplayer with anyone here who gets the 360 version.

Yeah, I agree that the 360 interface is less attractive, but those prompts aren't that big a deal to me I guess. Also I don't see people with typical bro type names like that getting far in a game like this.

Eh, I've seen some pretty dumb names pop up even on PSN, in Demon's (at high slvls). StabHappy420 and xBEERxJUNKY appear on my recent players met list.

At least those names pop up in little unobtrusive grey tabs during play, and dumb achievements aren't a thing being shoved in my face.

Yeah that's really what I was referring to. The presentation of these things. xbox's being obnoxious and ugly while ps3's is pretty inoffensive. The kind of names you'll see is just a bonus.

I figured most people here would get the PS3 version mainly because that is where they played Demon's Souls and there would be no prep to play Dark Souls. I ended up playing Demon's Souls with a 360 running party chat with people running blue phantom parties, so I figured I would cut out the middleman.

Aside from the choice of console-specific aesthetics, it's just more about my choice to adhere to the game's purer aesthetics—as I've said plenty of times before, I think that trying to organize groups or do anything that is sort of outside the game itself breaks the game's atmosphere and intent. I won't condemn anyone for circumventing the limitations it imposes, but that's not for me.

Yeah I really can't imagine myself doing any organized party shit. Maybe eventually at some point in time with my irl bestbro, but only after I've completed my dark souls experience and just want to bro around tearing up some unfortunate soulllsss.

I will probably play it both ways, honestly. I love the intent of loneliness and disparate pressure the game builds, but I also love breaking intentions to discover new ways to enjoy the game.

Is there a way to turn off the trophy BLEENGK notification on PS3 yet? I might get it on 360 if not. I really hate that sound, even though, as has been stated, it is less bad than the 360's. But that one you can turn off forever.

You can turn that shit off on 360? :O

Now if only I could make it work with my metallic lavender ps3 controller :\

Yeah if you press the guide button or xbox button or whatever, then move to the farthest right screen, right under Profile should be a thing that says Notifications -- then just go inside and tell it to turn them off! There's no option to choose individual ones -- it's all or nothing, so you'll also no longer see when any friends sign on or invite you to games, but for me it has been worth the trade off in order not to see achievement notifications ever again or hear that awful noise.

Jonathan Blow was really pissed off at those popups too, as I recall. Like you make a contemplative, totally HUDless game that satirizes gamer obsession and then MS requires you to add in achievement bling bling.

Well, I'm probably gonna stop watching Dark Souls gameplay at this point. It looks like what I want and I just want to be as surprised as often as possible at this point.

Dark Souls is just Demon's Souls except a little different, which is what I was hoping for.

And also in the E3 version, there's this message after you die and respawn:

Is it necessary? Depends on what the caption actually translates to. Cute, though.

Hadn't even tried reading that small text in the videos I watched, but for whatever I did think it looked pleasing.

Visually, it's necessary. I mean - the underline under Undead Parish would make for really awkward visual balance without that caption text.

press the gold button to download the shield template.

go crazy on it.

save it in high quality JPG, PNG, or GIF.

Upload it with the button that won't be active until at least the 20th.

I can't read all that damnned Kanji, but It would probably be a good idea to include your name, email, and mailing address with the design.
