Now that you mention it, it would be neat to have something like the Tales series' "practice mode" equipment, where you have infinite MP but all your attacks do 1 damage. Might be at odds with the tone of the game, though.

Woah. That shield is pretty good and in tone with the game. Maybe make it look even more distressed, like have a big black blood stain on it that looks like the result of a heart stabbing, then say the shield is powerful because it has the Blood of a Fallen Cursed King on it or whatnot and I'd say that'd be a pretty solid entry.

This whole project seems sort of botched. I don't know if the voting really decides who wins, but you can only see/vote on your friends' entries? :| Additionally, they don't really give you much in the way of guidelines or info or anything like that, so I feel like I'll do something and then they'll be like "oh that shield was supposed to be wood" and disqualify my entry or something.

Also it's not clear whether or not you're supposed to preapply lighting like that... if Dark Souls is very dynamically lit, it won't work. Actually, the best way to have shiny metal is to have a special pixel shader for it. This kind of thing is why game art teams usually require tight coordination.

Ultimately this is just a contest designed to create user engagement and they don't care at all about the quality of the work.

Yeah I was gonna say you probably shouldn't prebake any lighting on there like that. Even Demon's Souls had a decent lighting model for shine on the armor and equipment. I mean, its probably fine, but redundant.

I don't think it matters, guys. I severely doubt they're dropping someone's photoshop right into the game and stretching it across some polygons and calling it a day. you're not drawing an in-game texture, you're drafting a design. if the lighting contributes to the effect you're going for then I don't see the harm in it.

I think that winning shield is really cool and probably pretty unique in comparison to a lot of the submissions. I hope some dev blogs all of the anime boobs submissions, for the giggles.

From has always had pretty awesome art design. I love all the emblems in Armored Core 4 and 4A, and I figured a good design for a shield would have all of those to compare to, or have those for inspiration.
