no, i don't think anyone is really anticipating it.
but yeah, definitely looks like capcom wants in on that Souls action. they can't be content with a million versions of monster hunter
(EDIT: top post, referring to Dragon's Dogma) |

They're very different games, but they do have some superficial similarities, whereas NG and MW3, uh... huh?
All I mean is that people looking at both of these games might find themselves in a position to choose between the two.
There is a clear choice, but it isn't Skyrim, and that's where so many people are failing.
And yeah, they are both coming out around the same time, thus competition...
I don't think spectral was so far off. _________________

| Any reports on loading times? (I never really believed the prerelease rumors of "no loading times", considering how bad Demon's Souls was in this respect.) I'm wondering if I should get the 360 version mainly for the install-to-hard-disk feature. |

| If this wasn't clear enough already, you should absolutely get the PS3 version if you own both consoles. |

Seriously, there's next-to-zero similarities outside of the extremely-broad aesthetic. (please don't make me explain how I know this) They are both good games but for entirely different reasons with near-zero crossover.
I am not opposed to the "I drastically prefer this one to the other one" viewpoint because hey! That's cool, buy what you enjoy and you don't have to rationalize shit to nobody.
But: I am very much opposed to the "This games does that game better than that game does" viewpoint. At least in this case. The two have absolutely nothing to do with each other. Dark Souls is about as far from Skyrim as NG3 is from MW3, which is why I made that comparison.
To give it another analogy, this is like comparing Mario Galaxy 2 and The Witcher 2, and asking which had better art direction. _________________

Well, I would define both as roleplaying games you can really lose yourself in.
Since tha't a quality not many games share anymore these days (and thus something remarkable), I can understand that people compare the two titles on that basis. |

If you considered Demon's Souls a Role Playing Game...Sure. That's still a pretty big stretch.
That's like calling Zelda or Diablo an RPG. Yes, your stats matter: They take a dramatic backseat to much more traditional gameplay elements, and the explicit plot is there as a peripheral bit of spice at best. It's all about worldfeel and gameplay. This isn't a bad thing: Deus Ex (1 or 3) is not a game I'd classify as an RPG. I think this is to its benefit.
Skyrim is an RPG.
Dark Souls isn't. Not really, anyway. It has RPG elements, like Demon's Souls, but its aim is entirely different at the end of the day.
You could argue that it IS an RPG just a far more primordial one, and sure, I'd agree with that. But it still puts it well outside of what I'd define Skyrim as. _________________

It's an action RPG. As is Diablo (Zelda is its own particular hybrid).
It's one of the greatest genres when done right, because of the interplay between your immediate skills and the wider context of your whole run. The stat progression makes your performance feel meaningful. And that's a lot of what Demon's Souls is about -- the unforgiving difficulty wouldn't be satisfying without the wider risk/reward.

Loading times exist only when you first start it up and when you die. Seems there's a few elevators that are suspiciously long for the sake of being long, but otherwise, yeah, they actually lived up to that. _________________ twit |

Fallout: New Vegas and Wasteland are extremely similar to each other, thematically and even staff-wise. They are both technically RPGs. They have similar plots.
They are also so completely separate in execution that despite all other similarities, the comparison is a stretch at best.
And that's two games made by basically the same people in the same world.
Skyrim and Dark Souls are a couple orders of magnitude more separate than that. _________________

The whole DS/TES comparison came up because Skyrim has been said to be more like DS than other TES games.
Dark Souls is coming out next week. |

Yeah, that is kinda the issue.
This time they had the good idea to put random item descriptions on the loading screen, though, so you get to read about things you might not know about while you wait. Sure beats having to stare at Scirvir's ass for 20 seconds. _________________ twit |

Yeah, saw that one the other day. Kind of grossed out by these trailers and muting each and every one of them.
Oh, well. As long as none of that music is put into the game itself... _________________

| Lined up a pre-order of the PS3 Collectors edition on Newegg as the PS3 one on Amazon is sold out. It'll come a little late; that's alright as the TV is in the guest room, which is currently occupied through the end of next week. |

Basically. I'm literally literally thinking that I can start seriously considering suicide after I have the full Dark Souls experience. I just want to go ahead and enjoy that and then I can check out. |

Even though I work for myself I'm not really in a position to take off for this. Might try to work it out anyways. I just want to be the marshmallow man fatknight from the Project Dark teaser trailer. |

I dreamt my brother and I found a deal for it for like $45 and he was so excited and wanted to buy it despite having shown no interest in demon's souls.
but he wanted to buy it for the 360, which is even weirder because he's been contemplating getting a ps3 for awhile now. I had to argue with him and in the end we decided not to buy it because I certainly didn't want to pay extra for the online multiplayer. :( _________________

| Actually, I dreamed I was playing Dark Souls this past weekend. Then, Tuesday I had to go to a blink 182 and MCR show because my fiancee loves blink 182. There's such a sharp contrast between what I had to do this tuesday, and what I can't wait to do next tuesdayyyyyyy |

So, while I'm still fairly uncertain about how the co-op works...
should we use this thread for a Dark Souls Co-op Club? is most of everyone going ps3 for this? _________________

Coop works same as before. Need to be in human form to summon, and just put up a sign when you want to be summoned. Unlike Demon's you can put the sign down whether or not you're in human form.
I'm going to be on PS3, but I really hated coop in Demon's. Between the lag and all the other weird gotchas of playing in coop like hitstun messing up, I actually felt far safer in single player even with the threat of invaders. _________________ twit |

| I get the impression the lag was bad in Demon's Souls because Sony didn't predict the game would be popular enough to devote substantial server resources (which is also why it was split into regions and announced it would be shut down within months). I expect the multiplayer to work better in Dark Souls. |

The Cursed Crusade (also Capcom) looks more more inspired by Demon's Souls than Dragon's Dogma. Though CC has a Devil May Cry style "beast mode" aspect to the gameplay. I'm pretty sure that game is gonna be totally awesome regardless of just how much it is or is not like DS.
I dunno if this was talked about yet, but the fact that the devs can control types and amounts of enemies online makes me very excited. I hope they already have plans for Halloween. |
