You can be summoned while alive or hollowed, but you can only summon while alive. _________________

| Oh, well that's cool. I was thinking there was like no way to earn humanity through multiplayer if you don't HAVE humanity. Good to know. |

Running around through the Depths and killing rats is probably the fastest and easiest way of farming Humanity. They drop it pretty often. _________________

Heh, this game isn't as... unforgiving as people say, the Taurus Demon just jumped off a cliff for me, his sacrafice so that I might enjoy the game a little longer won't be forgotten.

Yeah, and the little curse things give p decent souls too. Like 200 a pop. Pretty easy to run through a few times and get a nice chunk of souls. |

Also thankfully it seems like getting cursed again is not likely to happen.
The only reason it did before is I fell down a hole onto three of those fuckers and had no idea what I was in for. _________________

You don't sound like a dick at all, I'd imagine most bosses don't commit suicide in a game understood to be this hardcore. I had more trouble in Kirby's Dream Land. _________________ Steam: Godamn_Milkman |

He has several Demon's/Dark Souls videos and he uses each one to take potshots at Sony, so I'm not exactly sure what his agenda is. Unless he's the new Chad Warden? |

| I just beat the Catacombs repeatedly sprinting through the whole place barely killing anything. I kind of naturally fell into that approach, since skeletons are easy to run around while they're assembling, and beating them up for all of zero souls felt like a waste of time. It was pretty entertaining: at one point I activated a mechanism while three skeletons were wailing on me, but fortunately it wasn't interruptible. The boss was surprisingly easy (at least for a fast/dodgey wanderer like mine) and I beat him on the first attempt. |

The game won't allow you to kindle a fire more than once, it says you require the "secret rite". You get this rite from the Catacombs boss. It's pretty valuable to increase your max Estus even if you only do it to the Firelink Shrine bonfire, I think. |

Another thing: I tried my first invasion yesterday and it seems that you can't use any Estus Flask as a black phantom dark spirit. That really threw a wrench in my plans and the invasion didn't go well. That's a huge advantage to the host, much more than the extra 25% of health-bar in Demon's Souls...
I guess next time I'll try canceling out that host advantage by equipping the anti-Estus talisman (although I'm unclear on what the range of that is). |

I just use them for everything because I figure better safe than sorry. Honestly you probably only need to use it on boss names/where rare items are/this kind of thing.
Meanwhile I found the dungeon where it looks like they just abused the copy-paste enemy tool or something, and the enemies they're pasting everywhere are past bosses. I just fought three capra demons simultaneously while a taurus demon ran up behind me and started hitting me. This isn't the right kind of difficulty, I don't think, but whatever. Not as bad as the room after the demon centipede, which is probably the most bullshit part of the game so far. |

Broco the Estus ban on BPs is probably because more than one black phantom can invade a person at once. I doubt it's a glitch, as it happened twice in a row with me, with four different people! I valiantly fought and died the first time after killing one, and I'm proud to say I survived the second onslaught (had the first guy at 10% when the second came in) before promptly getting one-shotted by a big-ass mushroom.
Also, don't forget that there's an item to prevent estus regeneration within an area! Keep that in mind for your exploits. _________________ I'm on Steam! ----- I'm on Youtube!

No, it's pretty obvious that it's essentially based on the Demon's system, where the idea is that you can be a client while in the default state (soul/hollow) in order to regain the advanced state (body/human) in order to become a host and receive assistance on actually advancing in the game. Much like Demon's, while I'm Hollowed I just always put a sign down wherever I am and whatever I'm doing, cause multi is fun and completely risk-free as a client, you get souls and you get to scout ahead to places you haven't yet been and you might even get some Humanity out of it. _________________ Let's Play, starring me. |

Guys I have played all of like 20 minutes of this game. A fair amount of that was watching the intro movie. I uh, made it to the tutorial bonfire, got whupped by the guy right past it and decided I was too tired to make a try of it.
Monday is a holiday though, there's always that. |

Nah, that was probably put there by the dev team, there were similar messages in the tutorial section of Demon's Souls.
I would have read that message anyway, I saw there were two and only read one before getting my hash handed to me. |

A lot of people say that.
Just because it was a safe place to chill, or...? I mean you basically have Firelink Shrine for that. It's just emphasizing Dark Souls' "there is no safe area" thing conceptually. There's really no home base to return to. Just some camp. Realistically though it serves the same purpose. NPCs congregate there, it acts as a quest hub of sorts, eventually fast travel opens up, etc. _________________

I do agree with whoever (sorry, forgetting at the moment) said that Firelink Shrine eventually takes on a feeling resembling the Nexus a little bit more as NPCs move in, and yeah, there is music, but it's not quite the same. It's a beautiful place in its own right, of course, but the music of the Nexus is some of my favorite music from a videogame and the atmosphere is pretty much wonderful. I like just turning the game on to look at the place and not really do anything.
Anyone who is playing this but has still never played Demon's Souls should not assume that it has been eclipsed or rendered obsolete by this newer game. They both do some pretty significant things quite differently, and Demon's Souls should absolutely continue to be considered an essential experience. _________________

| the nexus also confers a mild sense of ownership on the part of the player. NPCs move in, there are a couple of events that take place in the nexus, the story is doled out there a little more, and a few of the NPCs are pretty fawning. the maiden moves around. you usually come back after having actually accomplished something, and the nexus can reflect that. |

I don't really think "camp"-ifying it was necessarily the intent. It was supposed to be like an outdoor Nexus, because that makes more sense for the Metrovania structure. The space just ended up not having a very satisfying architecture because of the messy paths going off in all directions. |

| More than anything, so far (about 30 minutes in) I just kinda feel like I vastly prefer the level-based structure of Demon's Souls more than specifically missing the Nexus. This new open world scares and confuses me. :( |

i got this now too, by the way. tried out bandit and knight, think i'm going to reroll and get the master key instead of the tiny being's ring. that hp regen is pretty miniscule.
i love how you can actually die on the asylum demon, instead of it being a story element like the with vanguard. took me by surprise, it did.
an anecdote concerning funny messages: in the asylum i found two messages in the left hallway with the crumbled stairs (the right stair is the one with the iron ball). it said "illusory wall ahead!" and "nice ring ahead!"
i spent quite a while trying to find the "illusory wall".

This isn't really fast travel. I realized you can only warp to certain bonfires when a boss cursed me and I had to do like 4 hours of dungeon again.
I really don't know what they were thinking with this curse shit. |

I got tricked by the Tiny Being's Ring too. Can't remember what the description at the character screen was, but it makes it sound like it gives HP regen. Surprise! It only gives +30 HP. Since I've only found one other ring to date, though (outside of expensive stuff at various merchants) it's stayin' on.
I just defeated the bell tower gargoyles and then cheesed the heck out of the lightning-wielding miniboss next to the smith. Putting a couple of upgrades into my shortbow is paying off. Also I am running around without any pants on so that I can wield a metal shield properly; so far none of the NPCs have called me out on it. |
