I finally have this game!!!

I started out with a Thief character. The starting build seems a little less terrible than in Demon's Souls. Since beating Demon's Souls with a Thief character, I feel a bit more confident starting out with one in Dark Souls.

When I got to the first boss, that guardian drake thing of the crypt, I thought, "Oh, haha From, this is where I die and get taken somewhere or something. You can't fool me!"

And then I just died!

Fighting that boss was a whole heck of a lot easier once I learned that downward thrust attack rather than stupidly waiting for the demon to fly up and smash the balcony I stood on.

I got around to playing this again last night for about an hour. I'm still in the Undead Burg, and while I was playing I noticed a soul sign on the ground. I was having trouble with some molotov cocktail throwers, so I decided to enlist the aid of a warrior.

However, said warrior proceeded to blitz through the level, opening every treasure chest and killing every enemy way before I had a change to even see what was next. O_O

Rather than catch up and ruin the thrill of discovery for myself, I threw myself off a cliff to get rid of him. There might have been another way but I don't know it yet.

I was playing this last night and had a successful tussle with several skeletons right at the start. I created a new character because, as with Demon's Souls, I think I'm going to need a bit of practice with an easier class before I tackle a Thief.

As I explored the opening area, I saw a giant fucking raven perched on some ruins. I looked at it for 2 whole minutes as though I had beheld the actual creature. Then I slowly, so as not to disturb it, quit the game.

Help.

I'm putting together a montage of early Dark Souls deaths as I record them. I think that I might make recording Dark Souls deaths A Thing That I Do as I play through this game for the first time. Converting a huge batch of files right now and will upload the first of I'm sure many tonight.

Adil, I will say this knowing full well you do not want to hear it, but you really need to learn how to parry. At least 20% of the enemies in the game go from aggravations to trivial once you get parrying down.

In the Dark Souls Death Diary VOL ONE that I am about to YouTube, you will probably see how bad at parrying I actually am. The timing is different from Demon's Souls, so I have to unlearn those muscle memories.

Adi, I get the impression you're either trying to push through the graveyard by the Shrine into the Catacombs (don't bother yet) or you've run into Havel or something (I wouldn't try fighting him just yet, if only because the item he drops won't really benefit you until later later anyway). Maybe you're stuck on the Capra Demon? Co-op is your friend. And you're playing a thief, right? Actually, tacotaskforce may be right — backstabs and parries/ripostes are pretty essential with that class, at least until you graduate to a better shield and something bigger than a dagger (which I found to be useless on bosses (making co-op doubly vital)).

I'm actually running two characters simultaneously. One is a thief with an emphasis on Dex and something else I haven't decided yet (Endurance or Vitality?), and the other is a warrior with an emphasis on Strength. The death vid that I'm uploading as soon as it finishes processing features deaths from both of them.

I've got backstabbing down pretty well, and I remember that it was essential for thief characters in Demon's Souls. Fortunately, the timing hasn't changed too much in the transition over to Dark Souls, so I'm doing okay on that.

No, I'm not going down toward the Catacombs just yet. The skeletons are fun to fight, but I don't think that I'm up to the long road full of them.

Still playing despite having vowed to be in bed an hour ago. Just got to the Blacksmith and upgraded to Bandit's Knife +4.

Oh! In that case, I guess I can never invade but can be invaded to eternity. That's cool.

I thought of a really cruel idea. The Eyes of Death curse other worlds with black phantom enemies. When they die, you get half of the souls they drop. To cure the curse, other players have to find your summon sign, invade your world, and kill you. Now, suppose you hide your summon sign in the Tomb of Giants in that little alcove with the 6 giant skeletons? Seems like you could just sit there and collect souls forever. It would be mighty hard to be invaded, especially if the game added any black phantom giant skeletons there.

Reading this makes me very impatient to get to the rest of the game that's utterly unlike Demon's Souls.

I am kind of stuck on how to develop this thief character. I don't know if there's something that I should be doing for that path but I'm not.

Or if I'm trying to build a character that the game doesn't allow at this point. I really don't want to look at a Wiki for information because of collateral spoilers.

So if anyone can give a hand here in vague terms I'll appreciate it. I want to keep this character wearing light armor and wielding, at the greatest, a short sword. I prefer daggers and other light arms. I want this character to use magic and bowfire as secondary distance attacks. The stats emphasize DEX over STR. In fact, the STR is pretty low (9).

I'm looking to take the character to the next level of armor and weapon for this build. I've got a Bandit's Knife +5 and a Short Sword +3, and I've also got some general upgrades on the starting Bandit clothes.

Adi, my advice is this: thief builds are just not that viable in this game :( Much more because of the shitty weapons than the light armor.

I was afraid of this. I've got my dude up to Level 30 with a high Dex build. I'm going to try to salvage this into a reasonable build.

Swimmy wrote:
That said, there are still ways to do it. You will want to make either a magic weapon or a divine weapon (preferably magic) very quickly. Do this by upgrading a weapon to +5 then visiting the blacksmith in the New Londo Ruins. Either that or use the sword I told you about on facebook. Either way you should be doing much more damage.

My character's STR is too low to wield that weapon even two handed. Now I just need to find the New Londo Ruins. I've got a few more routes that I can explore to see if I can inch further along. My best bet for making progress right now seems to be the Capra Demon.

Swimmy wrote:
After that, you are going to want light armor combined with a REALLY good shield. There's lots of light armor about, so take your pick there. As for the shield, if you got the Master Key as a starting gift you instantly have access to the best shield in the game, though it will take a lot of effort to get it. (You can ask for for more details, but I promise it will be painful.) Barring that, go for whatever has the highest physical block percentage and the highest stability. With the light armor, you will need your shield to absorb all the hits that you can, at least until you get really, really good at dodging.

Well, I don't want to sequence break too much and compromise the challenge. I've been using an upgraded Wooden Shield thus far since it seems to block the best while also being light enough for my character to tote around. I'm keeping my eyes open for something better though.

Yeah, it is! I'm keeping my Bandit's Knife +5 around for eventual upgrading, and I'm also upgrading a couple of other Bandit Knives that I've found on Undead Bandits for upgrading as well. I'd like to have a small varied arsenal of light arms.

My god that fight. Two moments stand out to me. One: when I was particularly low on health and the background music rose in pitch and rose in pitch and rose in pitch and oh god can I have time to heal. I actually muttered at that moment: "Goddamn you harpies, I'm working here!"

Two: at the very end when I healed up so that I could withstand his most powerful blow if it came to that. I realized that I used the last of my healing items and that he was down to his last shreds of health. This was the final confrontation. It was so tense.

I spent my first successful playthrough of Demon's Souls keeping enemies at bay with magic attacks. I still use magic to soften up enemies over a distance, but my playstyle for my first run-through of Dark Souls is LET'S WRASSLE.

What does this mean? Does it have to do with the boss that I defeated?

Ooooooooooooh, okay. Huh! I guess it was planted in an area that I haven't frequented. I've mainly been active in Old Londo Ruins, Undead Church, and Firelink. Does someone specifically lay the trap in my world, or do they cast a general spell and it infects three worlds at random?

Thanks! I had one death where I started trying to pluck him off with arrows but got frustrated with the delay animation after firing that prevented me from rolling out of the way in combination with the fact that arrows don't home in on enemies quite as limberly as Soul Arrow does.

Also I wanted to kill it with my sword.

remote wrote:

Oh yes, it is! I'm enjoying it very much, especially since, as a rapier, I can hold up my shield and poke enemies while also blocking. This takes a heavy toll on Endurance when I'm under a barrage, but it's very worth it when dealing with up to three enemies whose blows I can effectively block.

Apparently this is part of Havel's backstory.

I skipped the Taurus Demon so I could leave the burg for hunting these assholes, and I was just working my way around from the back side of the parish to the front so I could open that gate next to the Sunlight Altar.

This player, in the quest to find me, went ahead and opened the gate for me. How nice!

When it got near, I noticed that the player was wearing Smough's Armor and the Dark Wood Grain Ring. And, to be that swift, obviously Havel's Ring. Your typical asshole build. (Also only got around 500 souls for killing it, so you know it was someone wandering about at level 1 being a complete asshole.)

I didn't get to see its weapon, because when I got close I let loose with my typical flurry of Wrath of the Gods, which takes out most low-level players in a hit or two. This player started flipping around to dodge, then bolted for the gate at the beginning of the Parish. I knew it was going for the Hellkite, and I didn't have the right assortment of spells to deal with the mess that would cause, so I had to make a mad dash myself. Luckily, a low-level player wearing all Smough's armor can't be very fast, so I caught up and, right at the Parish gate, executed the perfect running backstab--which took off the phantom's remaining 7 HP.

A victory against cheesy players everywhere.

Swimmy, you are a hero to all of us noobs.

After all one man's challenge/discovery is another man's frustration, I'm not trying to tell anyone how to play the game (I couldn't force them to listen to me anyway), I'm just saying the best way I think to play the game.

I completely agree about maps. I might look up a boss strategy or something like that if I get too frustrated, but I decided that I didn't want to look at any maps for Dark Souls. (I did look at a map once or twice for Demon's Souls, but I shouldn't have.) Getting lost is actually something I enjoy in these games--some of the most memorable experiences for me in Demon's Souls were when I got lost and felt a sense of danger and desperation that I just don't get much in video games. That said, I kind of wish I hadn't read your last post just now, as I hadn't previously heard about any orange gates.

Whenever I encounter Dark Souls information that I do not want because it potentially spoils something, I have the advantage of not-enforcing the part of my brain that remembers specific details well. If you have this power, I recommend it. Pretend that it's information you are getting from an overly doting mother or other source whose information you routinely ignore.

EDIT: Also I am finally done processing this whole batch of videos so yaaaay I get to play Dark Souls today.

My firekeeper at the Firelink Shrine is dead and I have an orb that says I can invade the killer's domain to avenge the firekeeper's death. However, I am unable to actually use the item either hollowed or human. What's up with this thing?
