Yeah, actually, you know, I was talking about this with my gf the other night. Not about TES, but about Dark Souls — where TES and so many other RPGs stick to the obvious Tolkien-inspired lore and aesthetics and elves and orcs and all that, Demon's and Dark Souls are way more inspired by Bosch, Berserk, pagan mythology, game books like Titan and Fighting Fantasy, and of course the feel of the King's Field series. (Bosch and Berserk are my own guesses, while the others are stated influences.) This is cool, obviously.

Anyway, I get what you're saying. Still, I think it's best to think of popular media's weird assumption that these games are at all alike will just bring Dark Souls more attention.

Which is only good, right? If it does anything to help From Software keep making games like this, I'm all for it.

I would totally do a podcast on this (and Demon's Souls (and other From Software)).

I finally realized earlier today that I should stop asking questions in this thread because the game almost always ends up answering them not long after.

Making some progress in Blighttown. Finally got enough dexterity to wield the black knight's halberd, too.

Been looking a bit like this:

Since I found the shadow armor and spider shield, though, I think I might switch to this for faster rolls:

I've been getting by just fine with medium speed rolls, myself. The chest piece you see there is really the only heavy armor I have on.

That ninja mask is making me feel like Ryu Hayabusa vs. Demons circa 1990.

So far this black knight's halberd I've got is pretty motherfucking awesome.

Just finished Quelaag by myself. I wasn't alone, but I had no help at all. See, I had just killed an invader on my way over to the web mound, and when I arrived at the misty white portal the player I had just killed had a sign there, waiting to be summoned. So I thought, why not? Of course, it worked out like I'd expected. They were mad, I guess, so they stood there at the door while I fought by myself. Well, fuck you, spiteful invader, I won anyway...!

So that was pretty satisfying.

Now I'm down in hell or whatever and there's a huge demon down here and nobody seems to know how to handle it. Gonna try getting some summons for a bit...

I kinda wish I had a way back out of here at the moment!

Ceaseless Discharge: Deceased.

Was hoping for some kind of path back up to familiar territory, but it looks like I have two new paths continuing downward into even more hellish areas.

Done until I'm back from work tonight, but I'm tempted to make the long journey back up and give New Londo another chance, or maybe check out Sen's Castle...

Actually, there is a path with a big group of axe-wielding minotaurs I might try before retreating.

It's the lower path lined with Capra Demons that chills me.

It's way easier than you're imagining, I'm sure. I only saw how easy it was when I realized what the phantoms I'd summoned were doing.

Basically, uh, just watch out for his big tentacle-arm-things when he slams them down at you, and take advantage...

DJ already described it: there are two holes you can fall down in those little hallways with water flowing through them, and the one that isn't easily visible because it's around a corner where water isn't pouring down it drops you down on top of like three of the basilisk-frogs. It's disorienting and you can end up cursed before you know it. That's what got me, and I think that's what's happening to a lot of people.

Yeah, Blighttown causes the fps to drop for me, and it's especially nasty once you get down to the bottom. So you're trudging through poisonous mud and a sluggish framerate.

Man, now I have to go look for this secret passage into the Great Hollow. I think I know where it might be, actually.

Anor Londo is really gorgeous. After coming up from the Demon Ruins, this feels like Disneyland.

Black Iron Armor! Actually replaces my rags from hell. This Crystal Halberd is pretty sweet, too.

So, in Anor Londo I invaded Lautrec's world and killed him, got his ring, went upstairs and found his armor, spoke to the princess and got the ability to warp... and then I think I fucked up. Used the Firekeeper Soul on my flask for +3. I guess I have to wait until NG+ to bring the silent maiden back, now, right?

Actually, I just found another Fire Keeper Soul (felt no remorse for killing the Daughter of Chaos after she infested my skull with her babies). Was the silent maiden's unique? I still see no way of bringing her back.

Playing around with Quelaag's Fury Sword +5 at the moment. Relatively low physical damage, but very high fire. Pretty nice weapon. I wonder how it fares in pvp, though. Seems like the range of my black knight's halberd might still give me a better edge. Should upgrade that, too, if I can find more twinkling shards...

Yeah, you might want to try to figure out a weapon upgrade. My black knight's halberd was taking off a pretty good chunk with each hit; what I did was circle strafe while keeping a slight distance and roll away when she swung at me, avoiding lava in wide arcs whenever that was on the ground. When she'd attack, she always provided a pretty lengthy opportunity to switch to two-handing the halberd for a hard attack. Wasn't much of a challenge at all once I worked out a rhythm. She didn't seem to do the big blast attack when I was the only one fighting her, either. That could have been luck, or just the generally cautious proximity I maintained, I guess.

He drops 5 humanity, so that was worth it (incidentally, it seems increasingly clear that "humanity" in Dark Souls is somehow related to human evil). Reportedly, if he's already committed his crime and gone, you will get a quest to kill him and rescue the lady.

I waited until the story had unfolded and I was given another chance to kill him because I wanted his armor, but by the time that happened it wasn't of much use to me.

The ring, however, is probably indispensable and you wouldn't be missing much if you just chose to kill him at your first opportunity.

specs, my vote would go to Darkroot Basin, and then the Catacombs. Do whatever feels right, though! I've done a lot of bouncing around between areas, making progress here and there.

Gonna go see if I can't help some people with the Anor Londo boss fight. A fun one!

holy shit, if you managed to do this already, hats off. I'm thinking this is the hardest boss I've fought yet. I can get in maybe three or four hits before I'm done, every time.

Also love how you die and your souls are down there with him, not so conveniently up above... Well, so much for those.

edit: Okay maybe not! Just gotta stay in close. Seems like a lot of fights end up punishing you for trying to keep your distance.

There is an NPC black phantom (or whatever we call them in this game? dark spirits?) who appears a few times during the game.

I was just looking at November in my girlfriend's Escher calender and suddenly thought about how the design of some of the castles and fortresses and such in Demon's and Dark Souls might have been influenced by him...

the later level design is just weak.

probably the biggest highlight of "lategame" (whatever that is) would be the catacombs but i'm pretty sure it's just From Software's spin on the chutes and ladders gameboard, aka remove ladders.

Cool, assuming you haven't seen Sen's Castle, Anor Londo, Duke's Archive, etc.

That kind of thing makes more sense as a cave system. Outdoors and in manmade environments, I expect to see more visibility and openness between areas. I think Dark Souls would've benefited from more gradual area transitions as well as foreshadowing (seeing future locations or elements related to them long before entering them), and it seems that didn't happen much because of level loading constraints and the areas being designed in isolation from each other.

That said, I agree the game does a pretty good job of turning those limitations into virtues, with ostentatiously secret entrances and dream logic.

Have you ever stood on a bridge in the Undead Burg and noticed the fires you'd later see in the Lower Burg? Or the forest you see from above that you later enter below? Or the glimpse of the Demon Ruins you see from the Tomb of the Giants after you clear the Catacombs, even though you never really see them until you've made your way through Blighttown? How about the huge tree you see in the distance from Firelink Shrine, the very first place you go after the Asylum, which you only see up close waaaay later in the game?

I still have no idea what you're talking about.

So I see what you're saying, now, but I guess I just experienced things differently.

So yeah, kinda feeling like this anti-lock-on ring is some game-breaking bullshit.

Nothing I can do when faced with someone like that, because as soon as I try to close the range between us and get in a hit or two, they've swung around behind me (since they can lock on) and backstabbed me. Pretty much in the blink of an eye. As if backstabs aren't annoying enough (I don't know why, but I have so much trouble doing them in this game while others apparently do it with ease), let's make it impossible for me and way too easy for the other guy. My only chance is if they end up staggered or I find a weapon that just knocks them back...

Combine this with hosts who summon you and then don't help at all with the invader or don't heal you and I'm not so thrilled with this game's pvp at the moment.

I've been doing that since pretty much the beginning of the game. Just hold circle (on PS3).

Just now I killed the vanguard boss in the Demon Ruins, but I died right at the same time. I guess I just lost whatever souls he dropped? Hopefully nothing more important...

Seath is down, too. That was a fun fight. Working on the centipede now. Gonna take a break for the evening.

I just bought the Giant's Lightning Halberd from the Anor Londo blacksmith and upgraded it. Is the upgraded basic halberd + lightning better? I wonder. This one seems pretty good.

Back when I first got to that area the cats were slaughtering me, but I should probably pay them another visit at this point.

Spirits who refuse to stick with the host are pretty annoying. It's like, what do you think you're here for? Why aren't you just playing solo?

Not that hosts are incapable of such stupidity (as I said before, the worst is when they summon you and then they get invaded and they just stand there), but still.

Man, your screenshots look really nice and crisp.

Is Smough's armor better than Havel's (or the gold-hemmed set)? I could go buy that... I want the sunlight shield, too!

Kinda curious about that scythe, too. At +15 I have to wonder if it's better than Quelaag's Fury Sword or the Giant's Lightning Halberd.
