I mean, it isn't very specific — just says, "includes a battle royale where four players can fight in an arena. For PvP fans, there are also one on one and two vs. two modes."

Lexicon, I have to wonder if you found our way here via the King's Field/D. Souls podcast we did, where I requested some Deathspell Omega be included (after B coma provided an anecdote of his friend equating Dark Souls to black metal, as something more challenging to get into coming away from punk).

(Also, I tend to name characters Paracletus now.)

I'm assuming it's more like the scythe moveset, same as the black knight halberd — which I liked a lot more than the regular halberd.

I haven't played much Dark Souls lately, but this afternoon I am gonna put on Dawnbringer's Into the Lair of the Sun God and get back into it.

I guess they really set out to make a PC version with everything that entails.

It's kind of an amusing inversion of the usual "consolization" gripe, I guess.

Sorry for some of the stupid comments on these — they were compiled by 4chan people, after all — but some of these are pretty good.

There is a dedicated Demon's Souls thread as well, but do as you please.

The idea of inscribed clay pots that actually speak sounds really weird, but I look forward to seeing what they're like.

Beyond that I think it's great that they're hopeful people will play the game as intended, unmodded. Personally, I think the only mod I could see myself using would be one to tweak the HUD ever so slightly, if there's not a new option to adjust its size — which seems like a given for a PC version, but who knows. They're sticking to their own design aesthetics rather than catering to the expectations of the average PC gamer (while also recognizing they will do as they please), which is great news.

Also hoping I'll be able to use my PS3 pad with no trouble.

I don't imagine there will be any way for Steam to provide anti-cheat measures, or anything like that.

Well, whatever. I suppose you won't see much of those sort of players if you play the game as intended, right?

Gravity?

Probably so. I'm just hoping the number of players who use such mods and exploits will be relatively small.

I was watching a live stream Quelaag did with some friends of hers the other day (one of them is playing the game for his first time) and a dragon body dude invaded and somehow used the flame spew to "carry" her into enemies, killing her. Do I want to know how this works?

It's great fun in Anor Londo as well, especially outside the cathedral.

Eurogamer wrote:
On close inspection, it appears that Dark Souls PC uses the very same 1024x720 internal framebuffer as the console versions, regardless of which resolution has been set in the menus. The option provided is for output resolution only; a simple courtesy to allow the game to play on most monitors, but the image quality will always remain the same. In short, PC gamers will very much be getting the genuine console experience here, right down to the pixel.

People are bitching about this in comments here and at RPS, but I don't really have a problem with it. I mean, the more faithful the game is to the console version, if only with some basic improvements (Blighttown and such apparently now run without all the chugging), the better. Right? By the way, don't read that full Eurogamer article unless you don't mind potentially significant spoilers.

I'm guessing there will be mods for resolution and everything soon enough, anyway.

The way I see it, GFWL remains the only potential problem, since its servers are handling all the online aspects of the game.

"Year-late"? This port only started earlier this year, and was handled in-house by a developer that has never done PC development before. I don't really blame anyone for being surprised at the lack of standard PC gaming frills, at least give the thing proper consideration.

Well, supposedly it's not gamepad only, even though, uh... it should be...?

I guess I feel indifferent toward the framebuffer thing. I mean, I can understand how it's baffling or a disappointment to some, but I'm just coming from: hey, if it looks like the console version and apparently runs a bit more smoothly, well, that's okay with me. It's kind of like... when I emulate, say, Saturn or PSX games I like to do so at their native resolution, without any scaling or filtering effects. I kinda feel like this might be a bit like simply having the console game on my computer, in much the same way. And there's new content and possibly some new people with whom to play, so there's a small bonus. I don't know! I don't see this as spelling doom for PC games from any narrative standpoint — Dark Souls is very much its own thing, and I think people realize that.

The way I see it, I'm just going to go ahead and get this PC version and hope for the best. If it turns out to be awful and unplayable I'll cut my losses and get the expansion for the PS3 version when that's out. I may do that, anyway! Dark Souls is worth it to me.

I'm not faulting you for caring, and I'm not exactly saying you're wrong, but like I said before I think the industry (not to mention a lot of the game's fans and critics) understands that Dark Souls is a unique game, kind of a beast of a different nature. On top of that, FROM are inexperienced in this. I don't think whatever happens here is going to set some precedent that will bring about the demise of PC gaming. Certainly not. If it doesn't sell, it'll just be written off as a bad port and forgotten. If it does sell, it'll be because people realized it was good enough to play despite these apparent drawbacks. And if it's good, it's good. Its drawbacks aren't going to inform other companies on how to port their console games, especially when they're probably experienced enough to get their games running optimized for PC, frills and all. Even a relatively small game like Binary Domain has a great PC port.

Just saying, I think this is a very unique situation and it should be evaluated as Dark Souls, the pure essence, now on the PC — not as a harbinger of sea change.

I don't know if I've seen a video that better represents what Dark Souls became after the BB glitch. Especially at the 3 minute mark.

Whatever may happen, I am so looking forward to the PC version right now.

At this point, neither do I, but — well, you basically said it already. I wish the arena was more interesting than just a flat square, with terrain and obstacles. Unless there are more interesting arenas, it looks like a feature I'll mostly ignore (and if nothing else the added benefit might be that this weeds out derp mask zweihander heavy flipper types and we'll be more likely to get invaded by interesting characters). Careful about that gamesradar video, btw, unless you want to see the player fight Artorias.

When was Dark Souls ever not about being an asshole?

Ever since there were the Sunlight and Way of White covenants, hypothetically. Is that a serious question?

I mean, I did enjoy a couple of youtube videos where people coordinated little tournament events on the hidden arena rooftop in Sen's, and that was kinda neat because it was, y'know, just some folks finding a spot and doing their own thing with it. I never went and tried to fight there, though, because like I said above, environments with more terrain and architecture to use as the "arena" have always been far more interesting to me. Just seems like not much thought was put into this and it's a cheap concession to the gamers demanding pvp arenas and leaderboards and other videogame bullshit that doesn't really belong in Dark Souls, which means it's just a thing the rest of us can safely ignore.

Sure, I meant flat dueling arenas obviously have their place and all, I'm just saying it's not really my thing. I'd rather go to the Painted World.

I have no problem with it being added at this point, for sure, but for me the "world pvp" stuff is always going to be where it's at.

So is this a mistake made by somebody updating Steam, or the same NB employee who posted "Attacj if the Guardians" on the DkS facebook page?

'Cause I mean come the fuck on, what are you even being paid for.

BBP, considering I basically agree with your views on Elder Scrolls games (for example describing them as "shells" of games lacking something more physical or mechanically substantial within) I would like to know what you think once you've spent some time playing this. I think you'll find it has a "shell" even more alluring than Morrowind or what have you, while it also has the guts of a real videogame, something you can really connect to instead of feeling like you're just clicking buttons to perform the weird simulacra of actions. My biggest problem with the Elder Scrolls has always how stilted everything feels (from hitting things to dealing with dialogue), and I think you'll find none of that here.

Hey, don't try to hog BBP all for yourself, Youpi. >:O

In all seriousness, perhaps we ought to start using spoiler tags again.

BBP, I guess I'd say it's an action RPG, but yeah: it is a little bit beyond that sort of categorization. I mean, this isn't Secret of Mana. There isn't generally any lag to the actual controls, but on the consoles there is often an issue with latency while dealing with player opponents. We'll have to see if this is any different with the PC version. Either way, you can expect every movement you make to be very deliberate, and therein lies the "tightness" I think you're getting at.

Youpi wrote:

I mean, a pretty big caveat would be that unlocking for free backstabs or to psyche people out with the aiming of your spells is perhaps what some would call an advanced technique. Releasing your lock-on and swinging around behind someone while they finish an animation to nail them is quite satisfying (and effective). It's also something no keyboard player could ever hope to do.

Everyone, what sort of character build do you think you'll go for right away in the PC version? I'm thinking I'll go with my spellsword first, though I will have to have a darkwraith ASAP as well. Eventually, I want to make a sunbro that I feel more satisfied with — I always liked the idea of a corrupted Warrior of the Sunlight seeking to usurp the power of the gods from a roleplaying perspective, but to me faith builds have never been as enjoyable as sorcery (w/ Moonlight sword) or pyromancy with a katana and bows/crossbows... Of course, I think I also want to finally make a character that is just some weird experiment, maybe dragon form with unorthodox spells or something.

BB glitching might work in the PC version right away — we'll see. If it somehow does not, and it takes people a week or so to come up with new ways to abuse and break the game's systems, I'm going to try to enjoy a little bit of pure Dark Souls.

I'm the same. Demon's showed people's file names. I don't get why Dark changed that.

Does anybody not put some care into their character's names? I mean, I'm sure some players don't, but I like to think each character really has its own identity.

Yeah, midnight PST. At least I'll be able to play a bit tonight — I'll probably stay up until 3am or so, even.

Pretty skeptical of this resolution fix and whatever sort of impact it might have on the game's stability, but I guess we'll see what comes of that.

I guess nobody else had any controller issues, but all I had to do was unplug my Saturn pad.

The game works fine. It's Dark Souls. Online stuff is super active. I'm happy.
