I have to quick run some errands in a moment, but if you can wait a bit I'll be around and glad to help with Duke's!

Message me on Steam when you see me in the game, or via GFWL on RemoteVwr

Fuck you, Hidetaka Miyazaki, do not add an easy mode to this game. I will sign a petition for you to get the fuck out of here with that.

I'm sure there are all kinds of arguments to the contrary, but this is a very particular kind of game and I feel making it easier would be destructive to its aesthetics.

Also: why? A year later, what's the point?

Also also: I'm talking about how I feel about this game, not "why a videogame shouldn't have an easy mode."

I guess I'm just saying that personally I'm more interested in the second option he presents: more carefully communicating the game's difficulty and the reason behind it to players. I also can't help but wonder why he would be considering this as a move for Dark Souls rather than for a sequel or some other sort of spiritual followup. Perhaps that is what he's doing.

But from a perspective removed by one degree, I suppose you're right.

So by the way, I have been finding this slightly amusing:

Felix and I briefly attempted to co-op Duke's Archive a little while ago and it didn't seem to work out. I was amused, however, as he walked away from his computer with his bluetooth headset still on, and before cutting out I (pretty sure) overheard his girlfriend say, "You don't like Dark Souls!" To which he replied, "I do! I like selectbutton!"

Not playing the PS3 version anymore, for one thing. For the first time ever I summoned a dude in the Burg on my new Gravelord character and we co-opped the Minotaur together, killing one regular old level 18 invader along the way.

I wouldn't say Gwyn absolutely requires a shield, since you could go in with other parrying devices, but you'd have to be pretty comfortable with parrying.

Really, though, parrying Gwyn is immensely satisfying. It's the only way I enjoy fighting him, even.

For future reference (I'm thinking of the stream Focus did last night, and the brief attempt Felix and I made at doing the Duke's Archive), when trying to play with a friend add them to your GFWL list and make them a preferred player. I can't verify this yet, but I read somewhere that it may increase your chances of summons working.

i didn't have either of them added, is the thing!

Yeah, and now I wonder if adding Youpi might have helped you to summon him sooner than you did...! Worth trying.

I'm on the Pacific coast, GMT -7:00. I end up getting out of work and then done eating and hanging out with my girlfriend by around 10:30pm (uh, 5:30am GMT) and I could do something after that... Otherwise, I will most likely have next Tuesday and Wednesday off. If nothing else I'll show up for the streaming whenever I can!

Weeeiiird, so apparently dark magic scales with STR, meaning casts with the Manus catalyst are especially potent at 40 STR and 44 INT.

Looks like my Gravelord may end up being around SL 130...

I sometimes dislike EpicNameBro's mannerisms in his Dark Souls videos, but the guy pretty much has his head on straight about the game.

His rant about difficulty in games, and in particular in Dark Souls, is pretty good. He does get into some clichés like "eating weird food is fulfilling," but I appreciate the comparisons to playing Super Mario Bros. as a kid and then renting NES games every weekend and never knowing whether or not you'd be able to beat the one you chose.

I probably haven't been getting enough sleep lately.

Oh well, I'll go get it later.

Sorcery trivializes every single boss. If you're making a sorcerer, you're making a pvp character or you just want to roll through the game with minimal effort.

(New players should stay away from sorcery.)

So I'm leveling a hunter destined to become a darkwraith specializing in bows, crossbows, and the tracers. In the Burg I'm invaded by a shirtless Solaire clone who starts throwing dung at me, hiding behind a blood shield. Eventually the toxicity hits me, and he continues turtling, never once trying to whack me with the club he's wielding (even though, since he has a blood shield, I'm guessing it could one-shot me). I guess he just wants to see what might happen to a level 11 character with their health ticking away, seemingly helpless to do much. Well, that's when I start using every trick I know to fish for backstabs. It takes all five of my flasks and one humanity to live through the toxicity, but I eventually overcome him. The guy even messages me to say "very nicely done." That's how duels in the Lower Burg at level 11 are supposed to be.

this is a cool story but man i stay off the goddamn radar till like level 20 at bare minimum cuz of peeps like this

That's just the thing, though! I always have, too, but my pvp experiences on the PC version by and large have been fair. That is, without the BB glitch, if you're invading someone you're only bringing the tools you've earned for yourself. I did get invaded by one person I am fairly certain was hacking, but I'm just relieved that has happened so rarely. So yeah, seeing this encouraged me to try going unhollowed right from the start on my new hunter/darkwraith. Obviously it was worth the risk!

I should be knocking on wood, but co-op and pvp on this new hunter/darkwraith of mine has been plentiful. Lots and lots of invasions, and I think maybe only one or two failed summons. Why this is, I haven't got a clue, but I'm enjoying myself as much as I ever have with this game, if not more.

The answer is washing pole.

Some apparently prefer the uchi and iaito movesets, but man, the reach on the WP is just wonderful.

Personally, I am loving the Estoc like never before on this assassin character.

I'm working on getting everything I need for a Chaos Estoc. Never made a chaos weapon until now. It's a lot of work, but I expect the results will be worth it. I'll probably stick to forest pvp for a while (before going darkwraith) since it's really flourishing and there's so much fresh blood.

SMAA is set to 4 and SSAO is off, but even when I mess with these the same thing happens. Since I can’t set my DoF resolution override to 1920×1080, I’m at a loss as to how I should keep the resolution of the foreground as it was… Will just keep using 1.0 until a solution is presented. Thanks yet again.

Am I doing something wrong, or am I just stuck with using 1.0 until this mysteriously changes with a future patch?

Also: fuuuuuuuck the Stray Demon.

That's good to know, 'cause I kinda want to change my GFWL name at some point, too.

Chester's cries for mercy kinda stunned me. He's a fascinating character. A lot of potency in his few lines of dialogue.

Just making note of this now since I'm pretty sure the first time I killed him he had something different to say. This time I allowed him to invade me once.

Anyone with a DEX build using the tracers: is the gold or dark silver better in the main hand? I see the latter has S scaling. Haven't checked to see how or if they can be upgraded.

Seems to be the case, just because the sword is longer and a bit heavier. Makes enough sense to me.

I'm probably gonna have to try the other katanas for a while now and see if I end up preferring them.

In any case, right now I love nothing more than the backward dodge with DWGR + double thrust forward with Chaos Estoc. You can just see how it freaks people out.

Adding Leo Ring to that mix...

Messing around with the Gold Tracer on my assassin. Even at +5, with 30 DEX and the hornet ring my +5 Chaos Estoc is doing much better damage, especially on backstabs and ripostes. I'm guessing I'm gonna have to hit 50 DEX before this thing scales up enough to be more impressive?

Had a similar experience yesterday, except it was in darkened Anor Londo and I was level 58. This guy was in full darkwraith gear as well, doing quick rolls with a black knight halberd and Havel's shield. I backstabbed him for 70k or something ridiculous, but his life bar appeared to remain unchanged. Then I ran over to the giant blacksmith hoping he'd be dumb enough, but nope. He just stood there making dumb gestures at me. I left and reported him. :B

My only issue with using the 360 controller is that sometimes the L1/LB button sometimes feels like it's... not quite sensitive enough?

This has caused me to take a few blows unblocked when my finger was on the trigger and my shield should have been up, so it confuses and pisses me off whenever it happens.

Other than that, yeah.

You know, not that I expect this game ever to be patched again, especially not the PC version, but if I could change one thing right now it would be this ludicrous idea that bleed effect can be inflicted through fucking shields. There are too many players using katanas and the tracers or whatever just turtling and mashing R1 if you get close.
