Honestly, though, it doesn't seem to matter much. I'm pretty good at rolling away from hits in pvp (unless I'm just lagstabbed from miles away). |
Yeah, in a game that's mostly about getting one shotted or not I guess your armor stat can be kind of trivial depending on how you play it.
I guess this probably isn't the best or most accurate position to take, but really what's the difference if you sneak in enough armor to die to a backstab and some chip damage over just a backstab. You still really need to not get backstabbed.

Better in terms of raw damage of in terms of ease of killing stuff?
Because with the snake's weakness to lightning, I've yet to have a toon who arrived at Sen's with a weapon dealing more damage per hit than that spear.
Edit: Also holy shit how fast this thread is moving. Bet somebody will have replied before I'm done with my edit. |
Better like I'm running around laying things out in 1-2 hits why do I want to poke at it with a lightning spear B) |

| Petition for a poison weapon upgrade path! It's gross that only 2 weapons in the game have poison. I'm thinking of making a poison dude. Poison cloud (or whatever?) pyromancy, then I guess lighting club +5 or gravelord sword +5, and poison throwing knives. It probably won't work but.... |

Regarding bleed, yeah weapons have different bleed effect rates. I still have the best luck getting it from katanas. (Another reason katanas are stupidly good in this game.)
More important is the type of enemy, though, as some are weak to bleeding. The other day I made a new character and beat up the Stray Demon with a reinforced club that had no upgrades, and he was bleeding out every third hit. Who needs real weapons anyway?
The ogre guys in Blighttown, the snakemen in Sen's, and the harpies in the Painted World all stand out to me as being super easy to make bleed out.
Edit: Also, poison weapons? I have three words for you: Rotted Pine Resin. Buy a pile of it at the merchant in the aqueduct. |
OH YEAHHHH!!! So I could just +15 something (or raw? What is the point of the raw upgrade path?) and use resins.. fuck yeah! I love you :) |

| Remembered that poison is completely useless beyond minor annoyance and abandoned Poison Dude idea. Character looks like she hulk. Got +5 caestus and beat some dudes up by the gargoyles. One dude had the drake sword and.. man... he was helpless. I kept chasing him down and backstabbing him and beating him right up. He used like probably his full 10 estus and eventually I pulverized him. I kind of want to keep this general level and just make a sort of good caestus to punch dudes up with. I did use my gold pine resin to punch one girl up. But I'm out of that now. Beyond this - I have no character ideas. |

The wanderer I've been using to play with spec has turned out to be quite a lot of fun. Also using the Dark Wood Grain Ring.
TXTSWORD, your caestus story reminds me: I was fucking around in the Demon Ruins with my sunbro the other way, when I got invaded by a dude dual-wielding Dragon Bone Fists. I'll just say I underestimated him, because I opted not to heal. The duel went on for over a minute, and we were both pretty low on health by the time it was over. He went for the strong uppercut attack, which looks awesome, narrowly missing me. I went for one last two-handed roll-smash with my Grant, and he rolled behind me to deliver the final punch to my spine.
That was a victory I didn't mind handing over! Even messaged the guy to say "whoa awesome" and he replied to thank me for the duel.
I kind of want to have dual Dragon Bone Fists on one of my characters, now. |
Shit - I forgot about dragon bone fist! Though I guess you can't dual wield them until ng+ but I guess that doesn't matter. Dragon bone in the right, dark hand in the left. I know how I want to play this character now TYVM!
I've kind of wanted to make a usable fist character ever since I first got dark hand and ran around literally terrorizing people with it. YOU'RE TRYING TO RUN AWAY BUT I BACKSTAB PUNCH YOU OVER AND OVER YOU CAN'T RUUUUNNNN >:D |

We're trying to make funny/fun builds - not be world class PVPers. At least, I'm just doing it for fun. Obviously, losing pathetically over and over wouldn't be fun... but if we can at least get some goofy dudes that have no idea how to counter this strategy.
NVM we're getting baulder shields. |

D: I am running out of build ideas because either something is effective and everyone knows it - or my friend has tried it and told me all about it - or it's useless. |

| They should stop letting people of all fucking levels break into your world at like - say - undead burg. It's ridiculous. My friend and I were working on our new dudes and we decided to coop through it together for fun but out fun was always cut short by some no skill scrub with a one shot weapon and super armor. Gosh they must be having a lot of fun. It happened to us through every place we played last night. One guy I pulverized and backstabbed a ton of times and then he got one pyrmonacy off on me killing me intantly - then taunted. it's so stupid. |

I guess spec and I have mostly been lucky enough to only have been invaded by players around our gear level. Once, just before we first started (I was leveling a new character to around 20 since she already had one started), I was messing around under Hellkite's bridge and someone with a lightning weapon invaded me. I don't always assume this sort of invader is actually over my level range, but it does boggle the mind a little to think they managed to reach Anor Londo without passing level 20. Then again, I guess all they really have to do is kill the bell gargoyles, Quelaag, and the Iron Golem (after slipping through Sen's Fortress). With enough patience it's clearly feasible. Just seems like kind of a lot of work to go through in order to get yourself a weapon that one-shots your victims in the Burg. So yeah, the effect is the same, and it is stupid. Reaching a level (a SL and a level of upgraded equipment, spells, etc.) where you can enter a place like the forest and do well (while still losing from time to time, in all fairness) is far more honorable and rewarding. It's a little sad that this is lost on so many people who can only cheese their way to hollow victory.
What can you do, though? Shrug it off and move on. You have better opponents awaiting you. |
I dunno man, I've encountered super dudes with the kind of frequency and gear and spells and miracles and pyromancy in undead burg - oh and super summon dudes - that I have my doubts that they're all even close to being my soul level. I have serious doubts about it. I'm not sure how they would even be able to equip the stuff they equip. And I find it hard to believe there is an endless amount of people who have mastered the game to the point that they can go get all the stuff they have - especially considering their apparent lack of any skill with the game.
And it's kind of tough to shrug off when you literally can't enjoy the multiplayer functionality of the game for a huge chunk of it. Just wanted to have some fun with my friend. Not that I mind being invaded - but literally getting invaded by an unbeatable supervillain every single time I go human is just ridiculous. I've really not seen any evidence that the people you get matched up with have to be anywhere near your level in any part of the game since the patch. |

Low to mid level builds are better off with magic/enchanted type weapons. High level magic builds will definitely use crystal magic weapon since they'll likely have a stat-scaled +15 equipped. Don't ignore the dexterity synergy on spellcasting. (I like how that vid rips off the contents of this more informative one but it's on nico so no one will ever know.) |
Can you not buy gold pine resin from that goofy guy in the depths?

| Well - my friend and I's shield/spear wall tactic worked insanely well. People didn't really have any idea how to approach us. If any wise guys pulled out pyromancy we just rushed them down with the spears run attack - which is a fucking insane sprint-jab. We played for a really long time without much need to heal or any deaths. I finally died right about when I was ready to quit anyways to a one shot spell when I wasn't being very careful. Anyways we had fun with it. We played "guard the treasure". Just dropped a ton of shit in that room where the cat covenant dude is and walled it up. Some people were so excited about our worthless treasure they didn't even mind losing so long as they could get their hands on it. Also - gesturing at us was met with a sprint attack that was always effective. Oh speaking of the sprint attack - my friend did die ONCE when he sprinted himself right off a cliff. The dude we were against was counting on it. Also, we pressured one guy into falling off a cliff by just surrounding him with our shields up. The pike's reach is so insane. It was pretty easy for us to jab at dudes and get shots off on wakeup from a backstab. IDK I'm sure if we went to Anor Londo or something we'd get our asses handed to us. But man - we had some god damn fun. |

Kinto I think it's just a bug, sorry! Every time I've died to Gwyndolin I ended up right outside his room, as long as I rested there. Warping to a bonfire doesn't count as resting there. |
Important: You must light the bonfire first. Something I've forgotten to do at the all-to-convenient spider lady covenant flame more than a couple times. |

No. Not at all. Your level isn't as important as how you use your stats. Do you have a good maxed weapon of some kind? Because you prob should. Then you gotta stay on em. Rush straight to the first one you see. Like someone else in this thread said, their close range attacks are negligible. It's the long range ones that hurt. Just stay on them and beat them up before another one has a chance to spawn. |

Sometimes when I'm right up close they'll still hit me as if I'm far away, wiping me out. The grab move is fucking annoying cause it wastes so much time and seems almost impossible to get away from. |

Ughhh I got in the infinite combo last night. Infuriating. I wanted to play a videogame but okay. I'm even using a sort of weak weapon. It's just more fun to play when it takes 2-3 backstabs at least to kill/be killed and when you can't win if you just manage to hit someone once. I mean my whole build on this new dude sort of sucks, but it's been the most fun I've had in pvp because it actually feels like an amount of competitive fun. |

For the people that played Demon's before Dark, how much did the former prepare you for the latter? |
I could breeze through Demon's in a day before i played Dark Souls. My Dark Souls progress was slow in my first playthrough. It may have a lot of the same stuff going on but you still have to learn what's what and what's where and there were a ton of all new mechanics to discover and learn to manage. I don't feel like knowing Demon's Souls thoroughly affected my Dark Souls playthrough at all. |

Started and completed a new PVP dude yesterday while laying in bed fucked up on nyquil.
Originally it was going to be a server build, but the lifeleech is so minor it just didn't end up being worth it. It's like 7hp per hit on a slow/powerful weapon and it doesn't get better with upgrading or anything.
I was going to concept the character as a vampire. Anyways now it looks more like a Hun. I'm using Murakumo instead. Armor of thorns hand and feet. Channeler's robe or whatever for the body (and my build is set to large upper body) with the royal helm. Everything is max upgraded except the royal helm is only +9 because I used to titanite slab making lightning server. Oh and spiked shield. ANd my murakumo is chaos+5. I'm in darkwraith. This has been my most successful playthrough. Probably because I did it all offline and also I rushed for gravelord since it has the same req as server. Oh and I took dayquil today and I feel more fucked up than I did on nyquil. Jesus christ. unghhhhh
Anyways I totally love my dude and I hope I can get him (her actually) online soon. My soul level is like 62 or something. I had to kill sif so I guess dungeoman and I will have to anor londo pvp and 62 is probably kind of low for that. |

I accidentally OD'd on cough meds a little bit and passed out and went to the E.R. shortly after this post. Whoops.
I moved my PS3 into my room from another room and I can't - for the life of me - figure out how I had internet working on it. It's an older model so I had like.. what looks like 2 wireless adapters. Though it looks like that eventually just got circumvented as there was eventually an ethernet thingy in that room idk. Man I wanna get this baby onliiinneee! |

I dunno if you went into Dark Souls blind you might come out with a level 100 something dude your first playthrough, and then in subsequent playthroughs you might just level to around 60 and be done with it like me. Of course, that all depends on the build you want to make. If you INSIST on using a shitty area heal spell with like 2 uses because you want to make a cool healer dude to coop pvp with (don't do this) you'll find yourself overjoyed at all the stats you have to pour just to meet the 48 faith req, 2 attunement slots just for that one miracle (you'll probably want more slots if you want a real character) and then somehow build a working character around that garbage. |

| For anyone wondering, Symbol of Avarice doesn't stack with covetous gold serpent ring. 10 humanity + covetous = 410 item discovery. You don't get more with symbol of avarice :( |

| You get humanity from every fallen red phantom invader, or from killing the host as a red phantom invader. Otherwise IDK. I take every opportunity to dark hand grapple an AFK opponent and sometimes get a shitload of humanity. |
