So, I'm having trouble picking rings. Is the Wolf Ring or Dark Wood Grain Ring a generally preferable option for fast-roll PvP characters (low level, 65)? Also unsure as to whether Lightning or Fire Uchigatana is a better option.

Build below.

it's a matter of preference, i guess. the ninja flip gets you a few more invincibility frames compared to the quick roll, but you're still susceptible to getting staggered when you're not flipping. the Wolf Ring is a little bit of insurance in that regard -- 40 poise is enough to stop just about everything short of a two-handed greatsword swing. also, the quick roll isn't really that much worse than the ninja flip. (note that i'm basing all this on the pc version's fixes -- if you're still on the ps3 or 360 then ninja flip 4 lyfe fuck tha haterz)

and don't forget chaos weapons! especially if you think you'll be having a lot of humanity on you. if you want to be super-prepared, you could always have one katana of both types, it doesn't take too much effort (though it may take some time/effort to get a fully-upgraded fire weapon).

I'm not going to claim to be an expert, but are there really that many exciting straightsword options in the game?

The katanas have bleeds and a comfortable arc & reach, there are greatswords when you just want to slam people into the ground, lances and such for longer reach/attacking from behind a shield, thrusting swords for when you want to look cool as all hell, etc. What's a straighsword got to give me?

swing speed? also the wider attack radius (compared to katanas/thrusting swords) could be useful.

That video is interesting, but yeah other than the pendulum stuff he is way too aggressive. I do have a few funny build for low level invasions but admittedly I always tend to go for the kill after a while. It would be cool to do more unusual things. It would be nice maybe to be a looming, stalking presence and never attacking, maybe spamming those ominous carvings, or doing something bizarre like spamming the silver pendant that might look scary to someone new.

You could use fog ring and stay out of sight, but drop "help me" carvings...

they'll think you're a ghost :)

FromSoft employee's twitter. could be nothing, but definitely assauges my fears somewhat.

music was pretty bad but everything else looked good. weird seeing a Souls thing with good-looking faces though.

edit: thank you based DJ

The new director is from Monster Hunter so that's not a terrible sign, especially if you like the capcommy parts of Dark Souls.

i'm more interested by the fact that one of his game credits is an Ultima Underworld game. ("special thanks," but still.) also RE: Outbreak and an Arc the Lad game.

doing some digging his background is mostly in cutscene work and background design, which could go either way.

couldn't find anything on the other producer.

reserving pessimism until a gameplay trailer.

oh dang good catch

to be honest, i think another King's Field would be kind of anachronistic. King's Field's aesthetic was, i feel, pretty heavily tied to the technical restrictions of the time -- constant streaming data leading to low-poly faceless models, dreamlike/vague sounds and visuals due to sound hardware limitations, and so on. not that a new King's Field wouldn't be interesting, but i kind of feel like the Souls games have done a better job of presenting the ideas King's Field had in a modern context than a new King's Field would. i'd be perfectly happy to be wrong, though.

it's a katana, and yes. for the rest of the area, just take it slow and keep your anti-poison gear on and you'll be fine. if you picked up the Spider Shield (either from the Depths or the Valley of the Drakes), that will help immensely.

I actually wanted to ask about those dudes who were harassing me in the burg and parish with endgame equipment. is that what was actually going on? guys playing through the game to get monster equipment at low level just to come back and grief new players? it happened to me literally the second I entered burg or parish in human form every time on PS3. I found it unlikely that doing such a thing was so popular, so I assumed that there was another explanation.

I messaged on GFWL with one of these guys once and apparently these are regarded as easy farming spots for humanity, with the added bonus of getting matched up against other high-skill-level players some of the time.

man, what the hell

when i filled up on humanity in the chasm i finished in like 15 minutes and didn't have to make someone's life miserable to do it

can these people not afford the dlc (another god yes it is $15) or are they just all sadists

yeah both the Souls games pretty heavily build upon what King's Field did, particularly King's Field IV. those Quelaag ancestors actually have roots in a similar enemy from King's Field III called an Alchemine. which i'm sure has further roots in some folkloric creature but you get the idea.

some more references off the top of my head:

- the snake men in Sen's and the Archives bear a resemblance to the Widda from King's Field IV
- the final areas of King's Field IV and Demon's Souls are very thematically similar (summon Lovecraftian horror, descend into said horror's gaping maw)
- the Boletarian soldiers in Demon's Souls bear a resemblance to the expedition troops in KF4
- for that matter the opening story bits of both games are similar; a king (Lucien IV/Allant XII) led astray by dark forces (Idol of Sorrow/Old One) and bringing ruin to his kingdom (Heladin/Boletaria)
- a dying NPC gives out an important key in both Dark Souls and KF4
- the hilarious propensity (started in King's Field III) of both series to feature wells to jump into near the beginning that instantly kill you
- both KF2's Melanat Island and Demon's Souls' Stonefang Tunnel are host to vast, dubiously managed mining operations
- maybe kind of a long shot, but KF3 had an enemy called a Skull Fighter that could be the ancestor of 4-x's black skeletons (though the Skull Fighters are far weaker)

i haven't played much of either Shadow Tower (alas) so i can't speak to any similarities there. i do know KF4 lifted its weapon durability system almost wholesale from the first Shadow Tower, and that the first game's structure of separate "realms" was likely a predecessor of Demon's Souls'.

kitten and i did a few co-op playthroughs late this year. i used it as an excuse to do Belmont Build Mk 2, me being the female Trevor to her Sypha. she about wanted to murder me by the end of it for picking a build that was so goddamned sucktastic.

the second run (i affectionally called it "The 1.02 Squad") was her idea: her as The Legend, me as Havelmom #8479 until i decided i liked the "wasteland cop" getup i had going better (burger king greataxe + wanderer coat + sorcerer hat + any arms and legs with poise).

we were halfway into Artorias + Ornstein when both our ps3s bit the dust. she could replace hers. i couldn't. ;____;
