interesting side effect of keeping the orange charred ring with the bottomless box glitch: you don't have to fight ceaseless discharge. you can enter the lava below with the ring on and walk around normally, even enter the walkway into the demon ruins! _________________

yeah.
it was.
you can actually prevent his horrible fate by refusing to tell him about the cool new pyromancy you found. he'll sound pretty disappointed but will rationalize it and move on. still sells you spells and everything. i like having him around firelink because he's such a bro.
for the exact same reasons i never talk to the crestfallen knight anymore. i just admire his presence. _________________

I don't like wearing a helmet or hood. I never found a good equivalent to the circlet in Dark Souls. I guess this Crown of Dusk is what I need to look out for. Never found that.
Are you playing this now? If so, I might be tempted to create a new character. I have never had one that didn't rely on magic of some type in either game, and I think that would be fun for variety. I think I'd like to try the deprived class, even if it would be embarassing until I find clothes. |
I am! I was going to go deprived but then I didn't want to be indecent so I went thief again. |
I wanted to see what happens if you beat the first boss dude the first time you see him, so I went deprived and now I'm trying to level that character up to use the drop because it will be hilarious. |
remember that you don't need the full strength requirement to two hand it.
i've used it a bit, you'll need armor and poise to hit anything with it since the swing takes forever to wind up. don't use it in pvp unless you like getting parried. _________________

real talk most of those min/maxers aren't even really that good at the game. you need to figure out methods specifically tailored to shut them down. _________________

i give up on dragonoid form :(
helping people beat the centipede demon once you've beaten it and have the charred ring is pretty rewarding. makes the fight a hell of a lot less scary for the people you're helping. finally got my faith up to 50 so i can use the sunlight spear. gotta say the knockback on mooks you get when you nail them with the sunlight spear is pretty satisfying. 2 slots though :( _________________

It's not like these people are going "oh man I'm just gonna use these things because other people are using it", they're just grabbing whatever they feel is strong and sticking to it. That's not even about min/maxing, that's deciding you're going to play by the game's rules instead of just do whatever the fuck and hope the game agrees with how you do it. If something is clearly making you feel like you're doing better, why not? And there's nothing wrong with that.
They are playing the game just as much as someone who wants to play a role with specific conducts; It's just that the game's mechanics are more willing to accommodate one than the other, and that's something you'll have to accept if you're going to play in versus with random people. As an avid fighting game player I see this happen a lot when frustration gets thrown at people who know what they're doing since there's a definition of fun in there that is not always shared.
Either way, it's not something that's going to go away just because you don't like it, so either you play with like-minded people or you step up your game and play with its rules more. It's one thing to love the setting and mythos, but if you're playing against people, the game's mechanics will inevitably trump all the rest, especially as it matures. |
This is not a fighting game, and I know it's not going to go away because I don't like it. It's going to go away because I'm not going to continue participating in something I dislike. And make excuses for them all you want, but these builds aren't something people all accidentally stumbled upon. It takes an understanding of the game beyond "grab what's strongest" to figure out how to put this stuff together, and beyond that the builds are often exact clones of each other. I may not be having fun by trying to take advantage of the more interesting choices in the game only to be thrown against people who want nothing more than to be able to walk up to you, press R1 until they win, and then taunt with a gesture that translates to "you mad bro" - but I can only imagine how much less fun I would be having if I were that person. So I can only respond to your suggestion of me playing in the way the game best accommodates with a stern "no" because taking someone's google build and using it for instant wins sounds like the most depressing experience I can imagine having in dark souls and is the exact opposite of everything I've come to love playing it.
I guess what I really would have hoped is that in a game like Dark Souls you would find a community of individuals who shared a common definition of fun, and desired more than to feed their ego with shallow victories and taunting that shows a complete lack of humility. In fairness, I basically hate most competitive gaming for this reason. (I don't view Dark Souls as a competitive game, but that seems to be the way people are treating it).
I just imagined the game Rock, Paper Scissors - but in this version Rock beats both paper and scissors and does nothing to itself and no one ever throws anything but rock.
Or here's one: In CoD everyone starts with a nuke and it's a race to use the nuke. Every game lasts seconds and the rest of the game never gets played. In CoD 14 they forget to put in the other weapons and add customizable insult messages that get sent to the inbox of all your opponents to show them what a big man you are when you win. |

Ironically (er, I guess), you'd probably find a community of like-minded individuals much more easily in a competitive multiplayer game with systems in place for organizing with others. You know very well that Dark Souls was not designed with this in mind, and I think you're kinda fooling yourself right now if you don't take a step back and remember that the online aspect is structured around the whole concept of fleeting encounters and isolation in a world where the ethereal occasionally becomes corporeal. There isn't any sort of community within the game. It's fairly obvious and natural for there to be a whole lot of players that approach the game with very little creativity, though, just doing whatever they've been told works by the internet. When you come across players who aren't afraid to use a little imagination and test their skills, they are sort of by nature exactly the opposite of anything resembling a community within the game. Places like this, where a bunch of us enjoy exchanging unique ideas and experimenting with exciting character concepts, are probably the exception (while even then we find ourselves blown away by a few true individuals out there, like those people who posted the spellfist and shooter videos on youtube).
This isn't a matter of just giving in to "playing by the game's rules" or anything that simple, because anything you can imagine that can be done in this game is within its rules, no matter how silly or outlandish it may seem. Going the common, obvious, boring way is... boring, yeah! I agree. Apol has it right, though. Don't give in to just being R1-spammed to death. Learn to adapt to morons who stack poise and expect to walk up and smash you into submission. Create new ways of fucking up their game. That's one of the very best things about Dark Souls: it allows you to do that! Sure, it may make things more challenging, but how great is the satisfaction when you've overcome the idiots playing easy mode and expecting victory to be handed to them? Embrace a superior brand of schadenfreude and take this away from them! |
Yeah, no I get what you're saying I guess I'm just burned out on seeing the same stuff and really the PVP elements in general. Even if I was doing really well at it, the lack of variation is a bummer. I mean I've had plenty of fun with all kinds of characters doing all sorts of things, and I'm not trying to damn the game for anything. |
i've experienced some burn out when i do co-op or pvp in the same areas for too long. get out, explore. try invading in places you wouldn't expect to find most people pvping in. i had tons of fun invading dudes in the demon ruins, darkroot basin (oh, fighting a hydra? well that's too bad) or the depths. most of those min/max tryhards stay exclusively in the kiln or the forest. in fact, the most fantastically varied pvp i've experienced in the game is by far near the first bonfire in the undead burg. have you tried invading there? if you'll notice, sansvie's channel has tons of videos of japanese players in that area. i've had some great matches there with some uniquely outfitted people. also, co-op once in a while for some annoying bosses like the four kings or the centipede demon. people are always looking for help at those fog gates and they'll appreciate it. _________________

Holy poo is this the best game idea ever I would play that so hard
Uh, speaking of builds, what's the Dark Souls equivalent of the meat cleaver/binded cross? I'm just messing around right now (currently single-handing a spear. It's weird to not kill everything in 1-2 hits!), but I'd like to have an idea of how I should be leveling myself. When I got the cleaver in Demon's, I had the level up faith like 8 levels before I could use it because I didn't give an eff about faith.
I'm currently trying to level up to the zweihander because that looks way fun to use. |
there is literally a giant meat cleaver in the game but i didn't play demon's souls so i'm not sure if that's what you mean.

ATTN TXTSWORD
just for you i developed a potent anti-giant armor/flip ring/mask of the father/zweihander/black knight great axe solution and i'm here to tell you all about it.
let your good friend mister apol help you out
it's called spears. specifically, i'm using a +5 silver knight spear, mainly because of the extreme range it has and the relatively low stat requirements, allowing me to put points in more important categories, such as vitality and endurance.
right now my set-up is something like this:
+5 silver knight spear (wielded two-handed)
+15 avelyn (secondary) w heavy and lightning bolts
+14 grass crest shield (stamina recovery)
+5 ascended pyromancy flame
+14 hard leather armor (looks cool)
+14 knight helm (looks cool also)
+5 giant gauntlets (armor + poise)
+5 giant leggings (ditto)
ring of favor (bonuses all around)
dark grain wood ring (for mobility)
your armor choices may vary, my biggest suggestion is have the best poise possible while still staying below 50% so you can flip. i'm wearing armor i personally like and thinks looks good. yeah i could be wearing one of the stupid pinwheel masks, but they look like shit. with this setup i have 50 poise which is enough not to get stunlocked easily if the enemy gets in a lucky hit.
stats-wise i started out as a warrior and my stats are something like this (i'm not going to turn on my ps3 just to check, just work with me here).
50 vitality (with the ring of favor this gives me over 1800 hp, enough to survive even a hornet ring backstab)
10 attunement (for a single spell slot)
40 endurance (max stamina, just barely enough equip burden to keep below 50%)
16 strength (minimum to use the silver knight spear)
22 dexterity (ditto)
11 resistance (default)
9 intelligence
9 faith
as far as pyromancy goes, i'm using fire tempest as a panic button and situation spell, but great combustion or any other decent pyro spell would work. only got a single slot though, so any chaos stuff is out. it's not something i even use every match, just nice to have.
here's the basic strategy of the super armor flip ring knuckleheads: get close and stunlock you. that's all they do, for the most part. it is almost comically easy to poke them to death with a spear. sure, you're not going to kill them in one combo (you probably shouldn't ever be hitting attack more than once anyway). a single backstab isn't going to win it for you. what you do have is patience and endurance. you've got plenty of hp and a little poise. most of the weapons these idiots like to use have a shitload of recovery, it's really easy to poke them when they miss. all you need to do is get them to miss. if they are flipping around, poke them at the end of the flip when their invincibility is gone. if they're two handing their weapon like a moron, pull out your avelyn and pop them when they run towards you. your basic strategy is to do little bits of damage to them and wear them down, while avoiding their attacks. don't get close, don't get hit.
i must've killed over two dozen of those guys last night, while losing less than five times, mostly to people who also pulled out a spear (they weren't dumb).
the biggest threat is still getting stunlocked, but if you've got enough hp and a little poise you can survive a combo. your second biggest threat is going to be other spear users and getting parried. since parrying is fucking hard to do online, you shouldn't have much trouble with that. getting backstabbed shouldn't even be an issue, your entire gameplan is to keep them at the edge of your spear range. they shouldn't ever get close enough to backstab you.
another big problem is dealing enough damage to take them out if they are healing. this is where the avelyn comes in. a full load of avelyn bolts can do upwards of 300 damage. if they turn around and start running, fill them full of bolts. if they have only a sliver of health left and try to pull out a humanity, same thing. learn to switch to your avelyn and get off some rounds as quickly as possible. it fires way faster than any spell in the game, it's your best friend when it comes to ranged combat. it really ruins spellcasters as well, you can easily score some heavy damage by hitting them when they try to cast something like homing crystal soul mass.
so yeah! get out there and kick ass TXTSWORD!!! _________________

just a note for you guys who didn't know, it's not really explained in game: divine weapons deal the same bonus damage (100 or 110) to invading phantoms that they deal to undead. i've confirmed this. if you want a really serious anti-invader weapon, think about using something with a divine buff or making a +10 divine weapon. the inverse applies to occult damage, it deals more damage to humans and thus is more useful when you're invading. _________________

Does it matter whether or not the invader is hollowed? |
well, divine damage (as far as i can tell) is applied to phantoms. while you have to be human to invade, you appear in the hosts world as a phantom, which makes you susceptible to divine damage. occult damage is applied to humans, players in human form that you invade.
basically think of it this way: divine weapons are good against ghosts/occult weapons are good against flesh. notice that when you exist in a phantasmal state your footsteps don't make noise and you don't leave ripples in water that you walk through. you're incorporeal in that state.
but yeah, dudes, silver knight spear. i was destroying all challengers in the forest last night. killed eight (!) invaders before i was running low on supplies and had to retreat to the boss door to homeward back to the bonfire. do any of you drop a prism stone where you kill an enemy? i've seen people doing it and i like to do it as well. i want the invaders to know how many of their kin i've run through with my mighty spear.
i love how chaotic forest combat can be. i always try to summon someone, anyone when i walk in. i know i'll be invaded by multiple phantoms within minutes and they never have qualms about ganging up on you. the people i summon tend to suck and get killed pretty quickly but they offer me a little breathing room in the first hectic minutes of combat. last night the phantoms were coming non-stop. by the time i finished one another was invading. this is survival horror at its finest. _________________

OK you may not have influenced TXTSWORD but you did get me to try out the Silver Knight Spear. I had earlier noticed its impressive range when the knights were using it, but had balked at the 22 DEX requirement. Yeah it's more powerful than it first appears, because of the +70 thrust bonus, the holy modifier and the very high poking speed.
That said in my first few PVPs with it, I've still lost with it against some folks in tight spaces in Sen's Fortress and Duke's Archive. It doesn't work as well if you don't have room to maneuver. I'll try the forest next, it sounds like that's the best area for your approach. |
ah yeah, i didn't think about having room to move since i was doing forest and kiln pvp, you definitely have to have open space to keep mobile and avoid attacks. once you try it in one of those areas you'll see what i'm talking about. the biggest trouble i've had in pvp is against spellcasters hitting me with a crystal spear when i rushed in to poke them. that was mostly my own stupidity though. another issue i've noticed is that since you have a lack of stopping power and most battles are endurance battles while you poke away your opponent's health, dealing with two phantoms at once can be insanely difficult. _________________

(of course you could mitigate the lack of a close range weapon by keeping a rapier or other lightweight weapon as your secondary. i've got a +5 chaos ricard's rapier that could fill that spot but i'm usually equipping the avelyn in my secondary.) _________________

look up the videos on sansviedotcom's channel with the spiked whip user. it's a valid build, but you're going to need to buff the thing with crystal magic weapon/sunlight blade/darkmoon blade to get respectable damage _________________

best ways to not get backstabbed:
1. don't turn your back on your opponent (unless you are far enough to run away safely - this is pretty far away)
2. don't run at your opponent
3. don't use an estus, humanity, or any other item within range of a backstab
4. don't use a spell or pyromancy with a charge-up time that would allow an opponent time to run around you to backstab (mainly fireball spells, firestorms, or homing soulmass)
5. don't use big R2 smash type attacks within backstab range. spamming them is a bad idea.
6. use spears. _________________

4. don't use a spell or pyromancy with a charge-up time that would allow an opponent time to run around you to backstab (mainly fireball spells, firestorms, or homing soulmass) |
These are the biggest mistakes people make when they fight me; I almost always take the opportunity to punish them. half the time they don't learn and try again.

| 2. don't run at your opponent |
i think in this case it depends on what you're doing or what you're using, or how you allow yourself to be moved once you reach proximity. if i'm using the estocs running attack it almost never seems to happen. |
well i probably should've explained better, but you're right, it is sort of situational. it also depends heavily on how laggy the opponent is. if they seem to be sort of laggy it is asking to get lagstabbed. there's ways to approach safely, and you have to learn how to do so, but it's something you have to get used to. as a beginner tip i generally discourage running blindly at your opponent, it is extremely easy for them to whip around and backstab you. _________________

for tactics do you mean? |
Apol meant my post which he quoted, I mention my Ornstein character which obviously uses a Dragonslayer Spear.
Spears really gives an edge against people that just blindly follow a cookie cutter build and just spam r1, you can really see how they panic when it doesn't work, and they don't have a plan B. |
cool, that's what I thought. gonna have to track down a nice spear over the weekend (not that I really mind losing in pvp, it's literally just how ugly the mask of the child looks with the giants armor) |
no mercy for the tribe of derp masks _________________

| I'm rolling with a lightning uchigatana and a winged spear at the moment lofi and it is pretty cool. scored some good victories in the forest with this setup this morning. my biggest problem right now is I've only got 9 poise, but I'm not willing to change my armor because I'm too attached to how it looks. |
nothin wrong with that, you just can't get hit! a little poise goes a long way though. also don't forget adding poise from gauntlets and leggings. on my most successful pvp player i'm using hard leather +9 because it looks so cool, with the knight helm, both don't have much in the way of poise. i'm getting a ton of poise from the giant's leggings and gauntlets +5, which also have great stats. the look fits while still letting me wear armor i like. it's enough that while i may get hit twice during a claymore or zweihander attack, i have enough poise chance to dodge out of third or fourth blow. with enough vitality i can survive that.
still suggest switching to the silver knight spear though, at least if you're fighting invaders rather than invading yourself. it deals more damage to invaders since it has a divine modifier. if you're invading people you might want to try something like the dragonslayer spear. it has great range and can shoot a fairly powerful lighting bolt with R2, great for hitting someone in the back while they try to retreat and heal. i know the damage doesn't look very impressive, but if you compare it to other spears, there's no spears with a thrust attack that really deal that much damage, at least compared to greatswords. the halberd MIGHT be better but the halberd has a whiff animation that can be serious trouble if you throwing attacks out there trying to catch someone with their shield down. i'd have to test it but i think the whiff animation is just long enough to open you up for a backstab on someone looking for it. _________________

Given their rarity, are they any more useful than Humanity, besides the fact that they cure toxin?
I've had a couple humanity-heals moments that saved my ass in fights when I'd run out of Estus and just needed one more health bar to pull through, but the Divine Blessing basically attains the dumb anti-roguelike Megalixir status of "hang on to this the entire game and don't use it until the final boss." |
well, you use it as fast as a grass in demon's souls. much quicker than an estus or a humanity, so it has its uses. it's possible the person who dropped 25 never uses them, it's possible to build up quite a bit if you don't ever use them and are on like ng+++++++ _________________

yeah but even bb glitching you'd still have to collect them, and there's not any really until sen's. unless you were starting with the gift over and over again, but ... WHY? they're not that damn useful. _________________

I think it makes sense to have a +5 lightning/+15 regular weapon, +15 shield and +15 avelyn so another Slab could come in handy. |
Are there any good shields that are upgraded normally? Most of my favourites are Twinkling... |
I mean, obviously it depends on your build - and really I'm not sure what normally upgraded shields are good - BUT one thing you can't get with a twinkling upgraded shield is good lightning defense.. which you can get with a lightning +5 shield.. which requires a slab. I DUNNO ABOUT +15ing it thooo. But yeah I'm not sure a lot of people know that upgrading your shields that way gives them defense, and not just attack, of that type. Otherwise, you're probably better off with the three crest shields. They're just too easy and effective. |
what the hell i didn't know this. i thought it just raised attack and was pointless. do you have any evidence that it in fact raises elemental defense as well?
some good shields upgraded normally:
eagle shield - at +15 it has 84 stability. this makes it almost impossible to guard break and it weighs half of what other greatshields weigh. it has low strength requirements, great lightning defense. if you're going to use a greatshield, this is probably the best choice unless you've got a strength build and enough free equip weight to use havel's shield or the greatshield of artorias.
bloodshield - great stability at +15 as well. decent elemental defenses, but the main boost is that it makes you much harder to bleed out, as well as gives you increased poison and curse resistance. with the popularity of bleeding weapons in pvp, this makes it pretty useful.
also you can't upgrade it, but dark hand is actually a great shield. after seeing it being used in pvp by japanese players on youtube, i started to wonder what was good about it. finally checked it out and here's my basic analysis. there's no other shield that has 80 resistance across the board and weighs almost nothing at all. granted, it has no stability whatsoever. if you block an attack with it, you're gonna get guard crushed. blocking in melee is a "bad idea". but it's great for blocking spells and pyromancy assuming you can't dodge it. it also allows you to parry normally. i'm beginning to learn more and more that parrying is vital to learn in high level pvp. i know it's hard and the timing is weird, but it completely shuts down any person who thinks they can just run up and stunlock you to death. block the first hit, parry the second when they inevitably try to guard crush you. pay attention to enemy habits, sometimes it's really easy to predict when an enemy is going to attack. if you want to learn parry timing, find a white phantom and parry practice with them. don't know how many people know this, but you can actually parry a white phantom's attacks, even if you can't riposte. it's good to do while sitting around the forest waiting for invaders (if you're a farming bastard). if you pull off a parry with the hornet ring and a fully upgraded weapon, you will kill 90% of the enemies you fight.
plus it feels so goddamned GOOD to pull off a parry in multiplayer. i pulled off dozens the other night, and each one made me feel like a king. _________________

| Apol! Do you have a source for your Divine bonus vs. phantom and Occult bonus vs. human thing? Or is it just something you've observed? I can't find anything about it on the wiki (but then I didn't look that hard). Also: do you know how/if this applies to PvE? I know "some" enemies are vulnerable to Occult but it'd be nice to have an exact list... |
from the dark souls wiki:
| Quote: |
After great deal of research, this is the conclusion:-
Divine mean holy damage. Divine weapons, thus, is strong against undead creatures. eg. When getting invaded since phantom is invading, and is undead divine is stronger.
Occult is unholy damage and is strong against Living. eg. When invading host is alive so weak to occult
(needs confirmation) |
i have observed, with mine own two eyes, the silver knight spear two-handed R2 attack dealing consistently less damage on the fleshed than it does on invading phantoms. it is more effective as an anti-invader weapon than a weapon used to hunt players in flesh-and-blood form. this is usually on the order of around 100 damage or so, but if you'd like i can get exact numbers. i can only conclude the extra damage is due to the divine modifier. _________________

I would like to hear that!
Just suffered the most frustrating loss in the forest. I'm fighting invaders in twos, endlessly, and handling them all quite easily, but one player who has killed me several times before a little while ago arrives again and we end up going one-on-one. She's using a rapier with her shield up and I'm having trouble getting a shot in and can't seem to get enough swipes in to trigger the bleed effect without her jabbing me a little too much for my comfort. But then — I backstab her and her health bar drops to what appears to be zero. Revenge! So I've already hit select and I'm going to choose my gesture and — what?! she's back on her feet. Before I can react, she backstabs me and drains the remaining half of my health. Fucking damn it all.
Also, only tonight I've noticed several players disconnecting somehow just as I deliver the killing blow. Lame? |
i always wait for that death noise SWCHINK sound before i gesture! _________________

fun fact about the bloated hollow guys in the painted world that toxic when they die - if you kill them with fire, either a fire/chaos enchanted weapon or a pyromancy, they don't spray poison everywhere. _________________

Re #1: just wait until you fight the anthropomorphic lizards; their height is such that every backstab gets them right in the asshole.
Re #2: the inclusion of the Drake Sword in Dark Souls is about as frustrating as the inclusion of the Thief Ring in Demon's Souls. it's very hard to find if you don't know about it and very easy to find if you do, and it easily outclasses most other weapons despite having no scat scaling (i.e. raising your strength/dex doesn't raise Drake Sword damage) until you can get them to +8 or so. There's basically no reason not to use it until you've rung both bells. |
on my mage i didn't bother getting it: you can easily make magic weapons in the early game w/ magic damage + B INT scaling and you aren't restricted to a pretty bad moveset like you are with the drake sword.
i think it is probably the best early game weapon for people who play the "enough stats for gear then VIT/END/Pyro" standard build though. |
the best early game weapon for true power players is the gravelord sword, obtainable from the start of the game by someone who knows what jumps to make in the catacombs and can dodge a few attacks from a titanite demon. gravelord needs a little stat investment to wield two handed but it'll last you almost the entire game. i've even seen it used in high level pvp. _________________

So I wanted to make a vid of my new co-op character, Arson Arsène.
I camped Anor, but all my attempts went horribly wrong. A beginner fed the mimics, another made me wait for ages for a summon before failing the jump to the balcony. A jerk wanted me to take part in a 3vs1 spawnstabbing party, and when I left with my black stone, thought I'd change my mind and summoned me again. One host more or less pretended I didn't exist, and disconnected after I killed the boss I was almost certain I was supposed to be killing. Finally, Apol invited me to play, but I missed the message notification.
But here's a game that went quite ok! Except that both the summoner and my camera's battery eventually died, so it cuts abruptly.
Yes, camera. Sorry. But I used all the best ghetto practices, tripod and direct line-in. Which means I played with no audio and therefore like an idiot.
Hope you'll enjoy regardless.

yeah, i got my new witchy witch deneb up to level 60 killing forest campers.
there's nothing more satisfying that completely destroying someone's 3v1 spawn camping party. i still don't get why these knuckleheads follow me into alvina's little fort but that bridge is perfect for getting them all nice and trapped for a crystal soul spear. killed the same spawn killing 3v1 farmer twice in a row and sent him snarky messages on PSN implying he is a poor farmer. i was doing darkwraith invasions in anor for a while, wonder i didn't run into you then. i won a 3v1 in anor last night that made me wish i had a capture card. _________________

oh yeah had one other amazing forest battle. i invade, see a gold phantom and the host sitting up by alvina's fort, think "oh god here we go again". i manage to juke them and run into the fort but they're smart enough not to follow. instead they start waving and throwing prism stones everywhere. they were both wearing witch hats so i thought okay maybe they're wanting to do an actual duel and not just jump me. i get brave enough to peek my head out and sure enough they both charge me. i retreated back into the fort and they stayed outside. at this point the host was free aiming throwing knives while the phantom gestured. i free aimed a firebomb and landed it right on top of the host. i did a joy gesture and they gestured back. finally realized i was going to have to do this 2v1 i attempt to knock out he phantom with a crystal soul spear but they dodge it. they start trying to encircle me but i flip and manage not to get hit or backstabbed (this level 60 character has 10 vitality, i can't take damage). cast a crystal homing soulmass and the host rolls right into most of the bolts, leaving them with only a tiny sliver of health. they start running back into the forest and i give chase, hoping to hit them with my uchigatana's running attack. i miss and get slowed down, visions of them healing to full as i was so close to victory dancing through my head.
until a fog ringed forest invader comes out of absolutely nowhere and hits her once to finish her off. he must've been hiding the entire time and had apparently invaded before i had. what a champ. i bowed to him and we ran circles around each other until we were sent back to our respective worlds. _________________

I started one today specifically with the intent to only play as a full dragon, although I need to find out how many scales it takes to get the torso stone. mentioned in IRC but i can just drop you a dragon torso stone, i've got one on almost all my characters. farming drakes for hours at a time is boring as hell. _________________
