This isn't out till Friday in Europe, but Amazon says they're gonna ship my copy out on Wednesday and typically things from Amazon arrive at my doorstep one day after I get the shipping confirmation~~~

so I'm pumped as hell. Does anyone who's still waiting want to talk about what kind of character you're going to play? I'll definitely opt for close combat since I figure it's the best way to experience everything I encounter. A focus on defense would be helpful then, I can live with lower damage.
Looks like it's gonna be big guy with big armor again, same as my first Demon's Souls character. He only made it to Soul Level 57 though before I swapped him for a magical all-rounder. This time I'll hang in, though.
Will also take blurry pics of my guy!

I went about a half hour in the wrong direction before I figured out the game wasn't supposed to be -that- hard and I was going in the wrong direction. I'm proud that I went as far as I did, I guess!

Just figured out how to repair gear. That was an important revelation.

you know, people talked about Demon's as if this were A Thing, but I never did this once in that game. and I can only think of one instance in which I even considered doing it, and then didn't and ended up regretting it (lost about 50k souls when I killed the unique black phantoms in 4-3 and then kept going. a legit loss considering those guys don't respawn).

I am. I'm going to be the scariest motherfucker on XBL for about the twenty minutes it takes others to learn everything I learned playing Demon's Souls.

It's literally the exact same thing as the Euro Blue Phantom edition of Demon's Souls (hardcover artbooklet, strategy guide*, soundtrack CD cleverly packaged in the artbook), which was a normal price release and not really limited at all.

Is the artbooklet just the game's loading screens again?

*the BP Demon's Souls guide was distilled from the Wiki though, which obviously isn't the case for Dark.

Sufficient enough!

I started with a warrior. Low beginning level, nice hefty stats. Kinda the obvious way to go?

Bandit and Pyromancer look awesome for subsequent rerolls.

Gotta say, this is pretty obvious but damn the smoother framerate and everything is nice after the frequent slowdown of Demon's Souls.

I think I might miss the atmosphere of the Nexus a tiny bit, but Dark Souls manages to feel even bleaker with the absence of such a place.

Yeah, I miss the Nexus as well.

the volume of enemies compounded with the vastly improved pathfinding and ai routines, the fact that staying at a bonfire respawns all the enemies in that area--good lord there is no rest for the weary. i got back attacked immediately after exiting out of the menu when i got to one of my first bonfires. this was probably because i was rushing and ended up kiting the guy along with me but jeez. it seemed to result in it not counting that checkpoint update too, so i ended up back at the start of the second area.

so humanity is something you use to become human, and while you're human, you use extra humanity to kindle the fires, and then? that's the only part of the game i've really been stumped about. granted, only 1 1/2 hours in.

started with the wanderer because i like scimitars.

I'm using a morning star with my warrior. Also got one of the Hollow's shields — it's bigger and a bit stronger than the one I started with, but it slows me down pretty noticeably. I have yet to figure out how equip weight and all that works just yet. Kind of focused on getting past a certain chunk of this place.

Hm. Actually, it occurs to me now that I should probably backtrack and try heading another way. Guessing the open world style is going to force you to realize you can only go so far one way before you just have to find another way to push outward/forward. Which is pretty cool...

Those big evil knights you'll come upon here and there are pretty scary. Didn't have too much trouble with the first couple of bosses, though.

By the way, that jumping backstab thing people thought might be a QTE? It's literally just the attack you perform when hitting R1 after jumping off a ledge.

this is only to say though that before there was none and now there is some. i find enemies less predictable, more aggressive, more capable of negotiating both elevation and long distances. all of which is pretty great, but none of which is to say they are "smart".

Yeah and the jumping back attack works on normal dudes too. Went up a staircase and pounced on a unique character. Works p good. More reliable than the normal backstab.

not to be pedantic but it isn't a backstab as far as i'm aware? i mean, the target's facing isn't relevant, only that you have enough height/momentum to initiate the attack.

Haven't quite figured out why some bonfires give 10 estrus flasks and some only give 5.

Something about your humanity level at that bonfire, maybe...?

The whole concept of flasks adds another layer of difficulty to this game. You can't just load up on herbs like you could in Demon's Souls, and I'm guessing those Goddess potions you can choose at the beginning of the game (I should've chosen something else) are pretty scarce...

i think adding your humanity to the bonfire kindles the flames, making it larger, improving the stock of estus you can reap from that area in the future.

The Gamestop here only got one copy of the 360 CE, and the metal box was dented in shipping, but everything inside is intact. Sucks about most of the stuff being download-only, though.

Anyway, I have to say that this game is absolutely everything I expected from what you guys said about Demon's Souls, and much more. Definitely in my all-time Top 10.

Didn't expect to encounter the knight from the European box art so early! He was facing the other direction, and there was a message saying "Weakness: Fire," so I tested out a Black Firebomb for the first time, assuming it was a more powerful variety. Instead, it harmlessly rolled on the floor, alerting him to come over and chop me to pieces.

Are they on a timer or something?

Also, is it possible to permanently run out of flasks? It says they're replenished at bonfires, but my count hasn't gone back above five at the third one...I started with ten.

Cool, I think I figured it out after asking.

Seems like I'm occasionally noticing an inexplicable delay when I hit R2. Nothing happens for a solid second, then my guy decides to attack. Kinda fucked me over a couple of times.

Yet another question: the framerate drops pretty severely in some large areas (such as the upper levels of the Asylum's courtyard), is this exclusive to the 360 version?

sorry, yeah - it's not a backstab I was just not being clear. It is similar, in that it has a unique animation likethe backstab and is triggered a specific way like the backstab. But, no, the direction the target is facing is of no consequence to my knowledge.

Oy I hadn't played demon souls, so I'm gonna try and hack it in PS3 Dark Souls, picked up my copy (for 40 since best buy gave me a 20 dollar gift card) but if anyone has any friendly starting advice I will be needing it, I'm sure.

You have to consume Humanity in order to reverse your Hollow and regain your body, and after that you can Kindle the bonfire (though you may need to consume another Humanity), which means you will then receive 10 flasks whenever you respawn at that bonfire.

Right now I'm having a rather tough time getting past the area with the boar shown at E3...

I have a couple Humanities, is reversing my Hollow a one-time deal, or will I need to keep staving off the curse?

And yeah, Bamco really fucked up with the code redemption site. preparetodie.com, indeed.

yeah, right now i'm not liking the game so much. it's very pretty, and the online shit is cool, i'll give it that much. but so far its just a grindy, sloppy action game. i just cut through 40+ skeletons by hitting R, R. level design isn't that interesting either. oh also i killed a boss by climbing a ladder and falling on him a couple times.

i really want to like it but so far its been pretty tedious, hm. this is my first couple hours with these games, if that means anything.

two handed style with some longsword on the warrior class, using the strong attack. i'm in that skeleton castle with the dragon and the minotaur boss and whatever.

oh right! they're not skeletons, just really skinny and dead. the other skeletons i haven't been able to touch yet.

fyi if you have a build with enough dex to handle it, the mace/morningstar helps a lot. skeletons are susceptible to "crushing"-type blunt object attacks.

I can't speak for Dark Souls yet, but this was also my initial reaction to the first few hours of Demon's Souls. Part of it is that the first areas weren't actually particularly hard nor atmospheric, somewhat contradicting the game's fearsome reputation. But it grew on me as I got further in the game.
