Uggggh I love losing 8k souls at the gaping dragon and then getting cursed on my way back.
At least these rats drop a lot of Humanity for some reason... _________________

| i definitely played past the point of frustration last night, it doesn't seem like any approach that's available to me right now is gonna work for the bell gargoyles. i have a crossbow but no arrows; i never found the merchant in undead burg, guess i better run through there again. |

Oh, I finally got my first invasion. He wasn't much of a challenge, though. _________________

Which ruins are these? I mean, where do I go? I'm cursed, now, so I think I should do this before facing the gaping maw again.
I'm assuming this is New Londo. Too bad I have no idea where that is yet. _________________

Unless you're trying to go solo, get your body and summon aid. Might take too much of the challenge out of it, but it's still fun. _________________

From the main campfire you get dropped off at via the bird in the beginning..... you just go downstairs. There's a staircase that takes you down just like... right by the fire... to the right of the apathetic knight guy. EDIT: to HIS right. you wind down the column and then there's an elevator or something and it takes you to the bottom where the ruins are. Also, going down that way is where you find the lady that reinforces your estus flask. |

I snuck up behind him (lightly holding the thumbstick to stay at a walk), backstabbed him, then before he got back up, ran ahead to grab the item he was guarding (a ring that ups your defense when your health is low; seems fairly useful). The backstab only took off 10% of his health, and he just follows you everywhere once he's pissed at you and I wasn't able to figure out how to shake him off, so he killed me later anyway.
There's another one up alone on a tower later on, not guarding anything. So, I assume they also drop a good weapon/armor, but I'm not even gonna try to duel them for now. |

OK, I guess you've probably already seen the second Black Knight, then. I came close to killing the boar but screwed up at the last minute. Does it stay dead once you kill it or should I not bother trying again and keep running by? |

It stays dead. I killed it by standing in the safe area above him and firebombing him to death. It took a lot of firebombs. |

My sense of virtual space can't deal with a 3D Metrovania. I'm glad I've got two roommate bros who are a little farther ahead of me and like to hang out in the living room when I play. 'Cause I can't find shit. _________________

Speaking of Metrovanias; I also thought this about Demon's Souls, but Dark Souls really clinches the case that this series is the true successor to Castlevania. I'd even say it's closer to the True Spirit of Castlevania than recent Igavanias, combining as it does the exploration and RPG mechanics of Metrovanias, with the weightiness, grim tone and brutal difficulty of the NES Castlevanias.

Good, thanks. Backstabs do a lot of damage to it and it's bad at turning around to face you at close range, so that's the way I'm planning to do it. You can just get the drop on it to get close to it in the first place. |

Yeah, that's easily the most obnoxious area I've been too so far. Later they start rising up out of the water behind you and just surrounding you. Just take it really slow. |

Hoping to get summoned at this point. One guy did, but he had the water in the ruins drained and we took an elevator down to some place new to me. Before I even knew what had happened, some huge black knight had pinned me to the floor and crushed my skull or something. So much for that. Just how far do you have to go to reach this healer and get the ring, anyway? I'm kinda feeling like grinding up the 6k souls for the item from the merchant to get rid of this curse would be easier, but then with my luck I'd just get cursed again.
Yeah, may have to take back what I said about this being easier than Demon's Souls... _________________

After a couple dozen attempts at making it through the place, it doesn't seem to matter how cautious I am when I try to lure groups of them out of tight spots and three or four of them suddenly do their long-range slash attack through walls or one of them reaches out for its unblockable death grip or whatever. Sigh. _________________

You know, I hopped on the bandwagon when everyone was praising Demon's Souls and imported the Asian version. I never really did much with it, though, so I'm pretty much going into Dark Souls blind. It amazes me that something this fucking hard is so addicting. I can't count how many times the Taurus Demon killed me before I managed to beat him, but not once did I get frustrated or angry. Repeating the same area over and over again until I got it right never seemed like a bad idea.
Now I'm thinking maybe I should go back and play Demon's Souls for real. |

as much as i appreciate the increased emphasis on emergent design, i'm still a bit baffled as to how i could've done so much depth-plumbing and still fail to encounter the slightest evidence of a guy who'll pony up some new got dang sorceries. on the other hand, i'm pretty impressed with and surprised by how much mileage i've gotten out of just this simple default fire spell. i still only have eight shots per bonfire (can this be improved or will it always just be a matter of using a different spell?), it's not even a missile attack, its AOE isn't that great and i still feel like it's gotten me out of tons of situations and i've never been utterly deprived of it without it bringing me some success along the way. seems really well balanced. certainly better than standing around waiting for mp to recharge and inching my way through cheesing every level to completion. but come on, i picked a magic build, game. work with me here.
also i don't think i've ever found that burg merchant somehow???
also what is the deal with those occasional orange flashes that seem to happen of their own accord? i think they refill your flask by one, but i can't always tell.
what else. oh i had a pretty excellent and vivid sleep aid induced dream of completing this massive tower area w/ new enemies. didn't realize it didn't actually happen until a bit after waking up, and i was about equal parts relieved and disappointed because whoa. |

I'd offer to come help, since I failed in that place so often I basically have an algorithm for beating it, but I don't think summoned phantoms can use items, and if I can't use transient curses I wouldn't even be able to hit the ghosts. |

The weird thing is, the one guy who did summon me was hitting them. Maybe there's a cursed weapon, or weapon upgrade?
Anyway, I think I fucked up. Got the 6k souls to buy the uncurse item, which didn't didn't take long... got my body back, and went down do summon Solaire and Lautrec to help me with the gaping maw dragon. Well, they're dead. Oops. I suppose I wasn't ready for that. Feeling pretty demoralized, now, so I think I'll take a little break. _________________

The sewers were really annoying, but ultimately I found that as long as you watch your step and don't fall in any pits in the narrow hallways, you will never have to go into the pit of horrific curse frogs with huge crazy eyes and awful curse smoke bombs and can just continue on your business, although you will miss out on a ring that lets you recover a small part of your health when you kill something.
I'm finding that the Firelink Shrine resembles the Nexus more and more as I unlock ways to return to it fairly quickly. It has music. It has a silent maiden of sorts behind bars down there. And I just rescued a dude from the butcher table area who is now there teaching pyromancy if I want to learn it. _________________

Just a heads-up guys, 40 is once again the Endurance cap for gaining stamina.
At 40, it affords you an equip load of 27.75 with Havel's ring if you want to stay fastest speed, 55.5 for mediocre speed.
If you haven't found Havel's Ring yet, you get a max 18.5 equip load for fastest speed, 37 for mediocre speed.
(If my calcuations are correct)
Time to try Sif again. Guys can you tell me if I'm past the bell or not if I'm at Sif, I'm afraid I missed the bell. _________________ I'm on Steam! ----- I'm on Youtube!

I swear Lautrec wasn't even attacking the dragon. Ugh.
Some of you guys sound like you're breezing through this, but I'm beginning to find it far more punishing than Demon's Souls. _________________

if you guys have a map of the the ruins then i'll draw some strategy lines for you. i've got that place on lock. finally figured it out and it's a breeze.
so the multiplayer components are rad when this works. just helped some guys kill the sewer boss after 2 guys helped me. protip: be wary of invading in the sewers, pretty much everyone is in a group. |

So yeah, I will play more of this soon and just suck up the fact that I killed two of the NPCs (and turned off the console in disgust before running back to see if they dropped anything I could loot). Hopefully I'll be wiser next time through. I am assuming this game has a NG+ mode as well...? Only problem is I'm sort of at a loss as to what I should do now. I guess I'll just explore and see if there are any places I've missed that don't involve bosses far beyond my current abilities. And try to avoid getting cursed again. _________________

Man, if you feel demoralized about killing those two, imagine how you would feel about having to kill stcokpile thomas because you accidentally took a swing at him in Demon's Souls after putting 40 hours into the game.
Yeah, that sucked.
