I never played the first game, but I'm finding myself very interested in this. I don't really have time to play through a game of this magnitude, but is it worth it? Should I MAKE time? _________________

So I picked this up and put a few hours in tonight. Not sure if I'm going to keep going. There's just nothing really selling me. I mean, the graphics and ambience are nice, but the gameplay is mediocre, and the RPG stat boosting/tweaking type stuff has not even surfaced yet so who knows if that will be any good. The load time upon death is pretty painful. I'm assuming that's there on purpose because the load times otherwise are seamless, but it was a really bad idea. When you die is when you really need to NOT have a load time because you want to get back on the boat.
The humanity thing seems like it could be cool, but none of it has any apparent effect anyways, so :/
I suppose this is one of those games that people will shoot back with "oh it doesn't get good until 20 hours in," but I just don't have 20 hours to pump into an unfun game in the hopes of it getting better.
Oh, one more thing: X is the attack button, not right bumper. Have these guys never played another third person hack and slash action game?! _________________

Oh and I had a bunch of notes from people earlier on in the night, and then they all disappeared. I was still connected to XBL, what gives? I might have enjoyed it more with some tips from other players. _________________

I died plenty. That's not such a problem as death doesn't seem to set me back at all, it just hasn't opened up at all and I played for like 6 hours. _________________

I'm watching my roommate play and there is very clearly an aiming bug with soul arrow. It completely aims the wrong way quite often. Is this a known bug that is getting patched soon? I think he's more annoyed with the game than I am and he loved the first one. _________________

i've had little to no trouble with soul arrows. is...he trying to use it without lock-on? don't ever do this. |
No. Definite lock on, zero obstacles in the way, completely clear shot, opponent is not even that far away: arrow goes 45 degrees the wrong way. _________________

A friend explained some of the game to me, so I gave it another shot. I went into the Catacombs and got sucked into the game. There is definitely a list of things that I think it would better serve everyone if they had put in the instruction booklet, but now that I've adapted to the odd control layout and learned the ropes more, the only nagging issue is that the lock-on system needs some work.
I was put off by the stat development not being very interesting, but it seems that the game is more gear-oriented so what you have is a little more important than who you are. That sounds a little lame, but the weapons have enough stats themselves that it's a fun system to explore.
The game also opened up a lot so it's not at all linear as it first appears. It's a combination of the world and the persistent save system that are keeping me coming back.
One other thing that's a little weird, but I won't complain: I got the Drake Sword thanks to a tip from another player, and now I feel like I have god mode on. I mean I just destroyed the Cabra Demon and the Necromancer boss really easily with it. And it's ranged attack is just icing. _________________

Catacombs is considered late game? The only major boss I beat before the Catacombs was the Taurus Demon. _________________

70, oh wow. I don't think I'm leveling up enough. I tend to not worry too much about losing my souls which I probably shouldn't do. _________________

Well this sucks. For some reason every time I get hit by a rat in the depths, my controller disconnects. I tried two different controllers, and the batteries are near full. :| _________________

No I'm on XBOX and this is entirely new. I beat the depths and I just got it again from one of the tree things in Deeproot Garden. It seems to be more likely if I block the attack. _________________

It happened on two separate controllers, but I disabled vibration and the problem seems to be fixed. _________________

I have all the stuff I need to ascend a weapon to demon +5. If I do this to say, my starting mace, is that a total waste? What does Demon +5 even do?
Alternatively, can you upgrade the whip? I haven't gotten it yet, but I heard there is one, and if I get it, I'm going to go full Belmont style so I'm gonna want to upgrade that. _________________

| Still using my Black Knight sword which I got from the very first Black Knight I encountered (guess I was lucky there). Well, since I'm aiming to wear the Black Knight's armor, this is a nice addition. Also the sword was great for the beginning and it's still pretty powerful, at least for myself. Hate the Catacombs though. Only went their for a ring and thought, well, maybe I could also kill the boss while I'm here. But Dark Souls (PS3) sometimes has the tendency to go into slow-down mode, if something really terrible happens on the screen (like 5 or more enemies blocking themselves and stuff). Also the Black Knight in the Catacombs suddenly disappeared, which nearly made me cry, since I wanted to defeat that guy. Could be the second foe in the game who killed himself (the big red dragon at Undead Burg killed himself too). That actually was pretty funny. I used the dragon for some redundant soul farming. After like 2 hours the dragon was like: Nah, fuck that, I'm going to eat you all. He jumped on the bridge and started running. He did run all the way up and down, fire breathing and slamming the foes on the ground. I was like: Ok, that's actually even better for soul farming, since I don't have to trigger the his fire breath. But guess what? Then he started to go into fly mode again. Then I don't really know what happened. He flew around, breathed fire. All the sudden he started to scream and I got 10.000 souls. I think that maybe he crashed into a wall or he breathed fire while flying through his own fire. |
The only slow down I've noticed on the 360 is a certain bit of fire in the lower area of the Undead Burg causes the frame rate to drop significantly if too much of it is visible.
So usually when I beat a boss I get a couple hundred or thousand souls, but when I beat the Gaping Dragon last night I got 25k. 0_0 What's that about. I've never even had anywhere near that amount of souls before. _________________

The funny thing about getting 25k on the Gaping Dragon is that he's one of the bosses that I killed on my first try (and I think that list is only also populated by the Butterfly who is kind of a pushover). _________________

So what's so good about the Halberd? I just got the Dark Knight sword which seemed like it would be pretty awesome once I can wield it. I have a Halberd, but haven't bothered upgrading it because I didn't really click with the way you use it. _________________

Played through Sen's Fortress yesterday. Never did find the hidden bonfire until after when I was watching my roommate go through and he had a helpful hint showing him where it was. :0 _________________

The more I get sucked into this game, the more I realize it feels like a spiritual successor to SotN. I keep forgetting that this isn't a Castlevania game. It's bleak and beautiful and all about exploration and collecting/upgrading weapons and armor.
I've mostly gotten over all the major annoyances. I lost 30k souls last night in the painted world because my character wasn't doing exactly what I was telling him to do, but I got over it once I got to the boss of that word. Besides, there's always that infinite soul glitch which I can always abuse to get souls back when I feel like the game has cheated me. _________________

It was worth it because I got a faith based spell that prevents spell casting around me. Also it's a pretty awesome little mini-level. Or maybe it just feels small after Sen's Fortress? _________________

Yeah this game could stand to be a lot less Japanese. It's not been soooo bad for me, but it shouldn't even be a thing.
So I've gotten to Anor Londo and explored it quite a bit, but find myself keep going back to the old areas and "cleaning up" because Anor Londo is a little boring and empty, while the earlier areas are all really exciting. But now I think I've been everywhere I can go back there. Not really psyched to keep pressing forward. :/ _________________

Do people help with the Seath fight? I could probably get him in a couple more tries, but the run there is not fun. I went as human once but didn't see any summon signs along the way.
Also confirmed for everything after Sen's Fortress being boring, uninspired design so far. Does it get better? (except for the painting world, that was cool). _________________

There's no one to summon to help me with this fire demon thing (the one that looks like the Asylum demon but with fire). I'm just sitting here waiting with no luck :( _________________

Yeah, that explosion thing is annoying, though it actually wasn't as bad with the firesage demon. I ended up solo'ing him and it wasn't so bad. If they had come up with a decent effect for it so you could see what it happening it wouldn't be so bad, but as it is there is a flash of light and then suddenly you may or may not take damage. _________________
