I think this week I'll play Demon's Souls again in preparation. _________________ I'm on Steam! ----- I'm on Youtube!

Yeah, that anecdote ("a 9.") gets funnier every time I think about it. I'm not an overtly mean person IN person, but I'm afraid if some dude actually asked/answered that to me with conviction, I would probably guffaw in their direction. Reminds me of the time I went into a Gamestop to get something (probably a PS3 or 360 controller), and the guy was like, "DO YOU WANNA PRE-ORDER MARIO GALAXY 2". I concentrated so hard on not laughing at him that I was visibly shaking by the end of the transaction.
Which is why I pre-ordered at Best Buy this time! Not that I'm a fan of the store, but they sure didn't ask if I wanted to pre-order Skyward Sword too.
Guys one day. _________________ I'm on Steam! ----- I'm on Youtube!

I'm not sure where you're getting the impression we're getting this impression.
Seriously, I just read the entire page, and I'm not seeing it. The closest is noting that it's getting a midnight release, which doesn't strike me as surprise or whatever.
Either way, it's probably for the best that some actual quality games are getting this sort of attention from GameCorp Gaming Corporation, Incorporated. _________________ I'm on Steam! ----- I'm on Youtube!

Yeah, that's the thing. It's just so hilarious to me, I mean. I don't know -precisely- how the 'push the pre-orders' thing works, but you'd think (and I wish) the company would allow at least some interpretive license to decide WHAT to push. "PS3 controller, huh? Did you snag a copy of Uncharted 3 yet? I hear you can get multiplayer access all week off a Subway promotion. Wanna pre-order it?"
Instead, whether it's because the company says Push Product X or because the guy at the counter is stupid/doesn't care, it's "you are buying a PS3 product would you like to pre-order this Wii product." The reason behind it doesn't really matter, for some reason I just find it laugh-out-loud funny.

I know... I said that too... in my post. The post you quoted part of. |
And I was agreeing with it. I added a bolded word to make it more overt. No need to get defensive! It gives us that little glimmer of hope that maybe game developers won't so easily dismiss 'be creative' as an unprofitable business plan anymore. _________________ I'm on Steam! ----- I'm on Youtube!

<3 costel for the inner workings anecdote! No, of course it's not nice to laugh outright at a dude for doing his job. But it can be guiltily funny at times!
(I pictured a solemn, head turned ever-so-slightly, eyes slightly-more-opened declaration of awe: "a 9.") _________________ I'm on Steam! ----- I'm on Youtube!

I went about a half hour in the wrong direction before I figured out the game wasn't supposed to be -that- hard and I was going in the wrong direction. I'm proud that I went as far as I did, I guess!
Just figured out how to repair gear. That was an important revelation. _________________ I'm on Steam! ----- I'm on Youtube!

Day 1 impressions:
There are a lot of things that need sorted out. The most frustrating is some sort of bug (lag-induced, maybe?) where you go to attack an enemy and it won't go off until 1-2 seconds later. The whole game doesn't lag out, you can still move and the enemy will still move/attack also, but then all of a sudden your attack will go off at the wrong moment, likely getting you punished for it. Like, I'll go to backstab a dude and nothing will happen, he'll spin around so I'll raise my shield to block his attack, and then all of a sudden my attack will go off and I get clobbered! It's terrible in a game this unforgiving.
They also need to fix whatever abysmal matchmaking system is in place right now. Instead of an invasion stone they give you little shards for invading, and they get used when you invade. This is fine, except that if the invasion fails it consumes the shard anyways. You're given four shards, and I failed to find someone to invade on three of them, which I find impossible to believe with this many people playing on release day. The second shard of four succeeded, however, and I invaded the world of someone who I can only assume was cheating. I was level 15-ish. I walk in and this chick is doing -cartwheels- in the heaviest armor I've ever seen, she looked like a metal yeti. Huge two-hand weapon, and she has the fastest tumble speed (in this game, it seems to be 25% of equip burden or less). I land a hit on her, and it does 3 damage. I then get one-shotted.
I'm enjoying the monster combat a lot, though! I went pretty far down the path with the actual skeletons not realizing there was another way to go, and ended up getting a shield that came in very handy against a forest boss. I've killed every tough enemy the game has thrown at me so far, probably some OCD throwback to Demon's Souls. The toughest enemy I've fought so far was probably the one right after you find the blacksmith. Yes, there's a blacksmith. I bought the repair kit thinking there wasn't going to be one, but there you go. At least I can repair at all the bonfires now!
The halberd's not as awesome as it was in Demon's Souls.
Anyways, I'm hoping to find a place to get more invasion stones tomorrow, and to have them function and not pit me up against cheaters/level 150 characters. I don't know how to tell what my equivalent of character tendency is right now, but I expect it to do towards Bad Person tomorrow! Which is sort of a bummer because I found the thing that lets me make weapons for Good People. _________________ I'm on Steam! ----- I'm on Youtube!

Why am I at work today instead of playing this game more.
Also I don't know where to go next, I had just unlocked a tower basement with a bad-ass Garl Vinland-type heavy armor dude. The stairs took me back up to the undead burg, so my choices seem to be between getting electrified in two shots by drakes, or climbing up what I'm dubbing Luck Ladder past the hydra deeper into the forest. That's a total BS ladder climb, by the way.
I suppose I could go back past the skeleton graveyard again, but I'm pretty sure I'm supposed to finish the branch I took first! _________________ I'm on Steam! ----- I'm on Youtube!

Well I actually made it a ways into the catacombs before I ever went to the Undead Burg, because I didn't realize there was another way out from that bonfire! I just thought, yep, 2 minutes per enemy kill, this is what Dark Souls is meant to be! The Caduceus Round Shield I got as a result came in handy against the Moonlight Butterfly though. So it wasn't a total waste of time. _________________ I'm on Steam! ----- I'm on Youtube!

I'm at work too, reading this thread every 20 minutes. I think I'm gonna leave early. I mean, how can I not leave early?
Sounds like I'm behind everyone, which doesn't surprise me despite like 10 hours of play time! It's because I kept fighting the enemies I very clearly shouldn't have been fighting, yearning for the Dark Souls challenge. It feels good to beat every single enemy, though! _________________ I'm on Steam! ----- I'm on Youtube!

There are much bigger ones just a little bit further into the graveyard. They hurt. |
Get right up in their grill and circle them, shield at the ready. I don't think one of them ever landed a hit on me, although I can imagine how much they hurt if they hit you! _________________ I'm on Steam! ----- I'm on Youtube!

No shame in a little teamwork, eh.
I haven't done any teamplay because I've only been human once, because I don't fully understand the impact of humanity yet and I'm saving it up. Went human to try invading someone, and you can read how that turned out on the last page :( _________________ I'm on Steam! ----- I'm on Youtube!

My favorite place in the game so far is what I'm dubbing the Valley of Heroes, it's the area you open after buying the crest to open it off the blacksmith.
Also I flawless-victoried the gaping dragon. _________________ I'm on Steam! ----- I'm on Youtube!

It'll tell you how many souls are required when you choose the stat you want to level up, before you confirm. If it doesn't let you, you don't have enough. It doesn't tell you how many you need for the next level, which is sort of a bummer.
So night #2, I still haven't found these belltowers yet. I did, however:
-Find and equip a suit of stone armor (exactly like those big guys in the forest!)
-Piss off the Cheshire Cat, apparently
-Fought a god-damned wolf with a sword in its mouth, which pissed me off enough to put down the game for the night, and
-GET INVADED BY MY FIRST BLACK PHANTOM! Oh, and my second. At the same time. I killed one of them before the other one (and the two NPCs) got me. _________________ I'm on Steam! ----- I'm on Youtube!

Just a heads-up guys, 40 is once again the Endurance cap for gaining stamina.
At 40, it affords you an equip load of 27.75 with Havel's ring if you want to stay fastest speed, 55.5 for mediocre speed.
If you haven't found Havel's Ring yet, you get a max 18.5 equip load for fastest speed, 37 for mediocre speed.
(If my calcuations are correct)
Time to try Sif again. Guys can you tell me if I'm past the bell or not if I'm at Sif, I'm afraid I missed the bell. _________________ I'm on Steam! ----- I'm on Youtube!

I wish I found weapons, I haven't found anything terribly good except the trident off those weird caster-Poseidon guys and I don't have the stats for it, so instead I'm using a Divine Broadsword!
Dinghy you can find a vendor that sells humanities, I can't remember how much they cost though.
So tonight I went and upgraded my shield and then thoroughly trounced the boss that gave me grief last night.
I then found the belltower that I missed and rang it after beating that boss.
Then I went back to the Firelink Shrine for the first time since starting the game, saw all sorts of new NPCs, found places I hadn't found previously, and went down the elevator to the ruins.
I decided the place was less 'challenge' and more 'tedious bullshit' and went to the catacombs instead.
Down there I found some items that apparently lure bad people into your game so you can kill them! I wasn't clear on exactly how it worked but I'm sure I'll figure it out another time.
I then beat a boss, and after his room the next area got so dark that I couldn't see. I called it a night! _________________ I'm on Steam! ----- I'm on Youtube!

Broco the Estus ban on BPs is probably because more than one black phantom can invade a person at once. I doubt it's a glitch, as it happened twice in a row with me, with four different people! I valiantly fought and died the first time after killing one, and I'm proud to say I survived the second onslaught (had the first guy at 10% when the second came in) before promptly getting one-shotted by a big-ass mushroom.
Also, don't forget that there's an item to prevent estus regeneration within an area! Keep that in mind for your exploits. _________________ I'm on Steam! ----- I'm on Youtube!

Still don't know how to open the door with the glowing gem in the center right by the bonfire, though, so I decided to go back to the Catacombs. Finally took down the first two bosses there with a companion, and then when I took the ladder up next to the second boss's altar I apparently entered the Tomb of the Giants (?) and quickly fell to my death after trying to follow tiny lights in pitch darkness. I guess I might need a lantern or something...? Not sure where else to go at the moment. Maybe Blighttown. |
A few things:
1. Check out the blacksmith's wares.
2. Man I had trouble with the Butterfly, he kept spamming that needle move that I couldn't dodge to save my life.
3. TWO bosses in Catacombs? I only found the one right before Tomb of the Giants. Where's the one I missed? :o
Tonight's exploits involved going back to the ruins, completely clearing it out and then finding out I'm supposed to have a key that I'm missing, killing the hydra (didn't know you could!), leveling my shield up to +10 and my sword to divine +5, gathering humanities for 'magic finding' (I'm up to 17), going back to the Valley of the Drakes and getting pissed at how hard those regular enemies are, and then finally finding the key I needed for the ruins! _________________ I'm on Steam! ----- I'm on Youtube!

Hey remote, about that area up the ladder from the Hydra, that IS the general area that the door from the forest bonfire takes you to! Those non-targetables are not people invading, they're just NPCs. All the non-targetables but one will disappear forever when you kill them! I thought it was a great idea for challenging NPCs. So far that area is my favorite so far, both because it presents unique combat challenges and it's a great way to rack up some souls. _________________ I'm on Steam! ----- I'm on Youtube!

Yeah, that's the true neutral faction. Basically, it's the PvP for Pussies faction.
I'm pretty disillusioned by the PvP prospects right now, basically I accidentally locked myself out of all PvP factions so I'd have to restart my character or go to NG+.
Overall from Anor Londo on I'm really thinking this game isn't quite what Demon's Souls was. _________________ I'm on Steam! ----- I'm on Youtube!

I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get to the crystal caves from Duke's Archive. I've done everything there to be done, I think, except find my way to the caves.

I actually went down there just today Riff Rex! I'm part of the Path of the Dragon right now too! Too bad PvP doesn't even remotely work at all, or else we could go on the prowl together.
I locked myself out of one of the major PvP covenants 9 seconds after joining it, by accident. I then looked up the other major PvP covenant and found out I'd already failed the conditions for it. Same for the neutral PvP covenant. And Dragon and Gravelord's don't work from what I tested all day today. So, good game. _________________ I'm on Steam! ----- I'm on Youtube!

Yeah the further I get into the game the worse it gets, Lost Izalith reminded me of the Doom levels I made when I was eight god-damned years old. (Demon Ruins should have been foreshadowing enough, 6 taurus demons way off in the distance, hilariously in-sync and facing the same direction, to the degree)
Hey devs do you really think 27 dragons and 35 baby fatties was enough? I could have used more. And could you turn up the glare on the lava a little more please, I'm still running above 8 fps.
It's like they finished up Blighttown, got the Anor Londo level design finished, and then promptly ran out of budget and were forced at gunpoint to finish the game in four days. _________________ I'm on Steam! ----- I'm on Youtube!

Spectralsound, re: crystal caves, it's super short and can be scooted through at a dead run once you know what you doing. There's a visual hint that becomes obvious once you get there!
The bummer is, if you die on the boss, you have to run all the way down and through from the Duke's Archive, unless there was a bonfire I missed. (So only die on the boss once!)
Txtsword, re: summoning, as I understand it, it's easier to see each other's summon stones if you're in a Co-op covenant together (i.e. both Way of White, or both Princess's Guard, or both Warrior of Sunlight). So a good idea if you're looking to co-op is both join Way of White at the beginning from that fat dude.
Of course, that may have already been the case, and I don't doubt it. I got invaded a few times in Demon's Ruins (and managed to smack down the invaders mid-taurus demon fight!) but I still haven't co-opped yet. I'm about to beat the game doing the entire thing solo, I figure I might as well go the distance before trying to force myself on the unwilling online component. _________________ I'm on Steam! ----- I'm on Youtube!

I mean, it turns from bright day to practically midnight over the course of an elevator ride. I would say New Londo Ruins is the most jarring transition if I had to pick.
Stepping into a tree in Blighttown and emerging a few minutes later in Ash Lake is eerie, but I liked it. _________________ I'm on Steam! ----- I'm on Youtube!

I probably wasn't supposed to fight Ceaseless Discharge directly after Queelag, was I?
I definitely wasn't supposed to actually kill him.
I definitely definitely am not supposed to be pressing on through the Demon Temple. Like 20 Capra Demon mobs in, this is getting sort of ridiculous. |
Hey, that's what I did. I should log in right now and fight the last boss, I just got really turned off by that area and the one after it :( I made DooM levels when I was 8 or 9 by just making big rooms and putting 10 cyberdemons and 20 barons of hell in it. So basically at 8 or 9 I was qualified to do level design for Demon Ruins and beyond. _________________ I'm on Steam! ----- I'm on Youtube!

so use a shield, raise your stamina and use something like the gold-hemmed armor set. |
I have an eagle shield +14 and max stamina and he blows right through it, and trying to back off results in him pressing the issue almost immediately after finishing his combo. The black knight shield (for the 95% fire) doesn't have enough stability to be able to block more than two of his swings, either.
There's a trick to him, though. _________________ I'm on Steam! ----- I'm on Youtube!

No indeed. I thought that until near the end of the game too. Then I played around with him for awhile and you can get him to come down off the wall. _________________ I'm on Steam! ----- I'm on Youtube!

| level 713 HERE I COME |
I read about that before the game came out in America, I'm surprised they never fixed it!
Regardless, I beat the game at level 42 to prove a point, so that I could say I did it without needless overlevelling.
Now that I 'did my time', I just made a second character and speedran him down to ash lake, and there's a nickel rubberbanded over my square button right now.
(You can also do it with humanity)
(You can also do it with throwing knives and firebombs(!)) _________________ I'm on Steam! ----- I'm on Youtube!

That happened to me back when I killed Dark Sun Gwyndolin. _________________ I'm on Steam! ----- I'm on Youtube!
