at least the gamestop people recommending preorders are just doing their jobs.

Yeah, that's the thing. It's just so hilarious to me, I mean. I don't know -precisely- how the 'push the pre-orders' thing works, but you'd think (and I wish) the company would allow at least some interpretive license to decide WHAT to push. "PS3 controller, huh? Did you snag a copy of Uncharted 3 yet? I hear you can get multiplayer access all week off a Subway promotion. Wanna pre-order it?"

Instead, whether it's because the company says Push Product X or because the guy at the counter is stupid/doesn't care, it's "you are buying a PS3 product would you like to pre-order this Wii product." The reason behind it doesn't really matter, for some reason I just find it laugh-out-loud funny

Because no one explicitly asked for the reason, I feel compelled to provide it.

Basically, pre-orders dictate an employees hours and district wide rating. I'm sure you know that. It's a retail job, but to deny the sales aspect of it would be in poor order. Power Up Rewards cards and Pre-Orders are measured district by district, employee, by employee. It decides who floats, and who sinks. It's the guillotine essentially, so to keep those numbers up there will at times be specific products we're forced to push. Mainly because the developers and publishers plead for us to do so. For instance, like having a Madden 2012 midnight even though only twenty people pre-ordered the game, or like Super Mario Galaxy 2 where we were encouraged to end a fiscal period with a certain amount of SMG2 pre-orders to secure a bonus copy for the store to raffle off, this assists in building rapport with customers and secures regulars. Otherwise we take the blame for it.

A lot of the time, we're instructed to be smart and perform "detective work" about how we read a potential customer. If you're wearing a Star Wars t-shirt, I'm going to ask you about Knights of the Old Republic, if you're wearing a sports t-shirt, sports game, e.t.c. However, most of the time if you have a rewards card, I look at your prior purchases and go from there, the rest of the time, I push Call of Duty. Hard. Really fucking hard. Because almost everyone and anyone will pre-order it just to feel like they fit in.

Most Gamestops are full to the brim with absolute idiots. Customer and employee alike. That's really the main cause of any weirdness you'll find. But like TXTSWORD said, there's plenty of normal stores with really cool people in them.

Oh, and the whole "A 9" thing. Most of the time, we're treating customers like that because they need some form of authority regarding their purchase, some form of a base abstraction that allows them to feel better about the fact that they very might hate the game, and not agree with a numerical score issued by people who don't even play games. Don't take offense to it, and don't laugh at employees man, that's just dick, just realize that we're trying to guide the lowest common denominator into a purchase that doesn't leave them scared and vulnerable.

Although, I'm sure it was pretty funny none the less. I might've laughed myself, it's all in the intonation and how utterly over the top the guy was. I'm picturing John C. Reiley yelling "A NINE!" in my head with a Gears of War 3 "I'm going commando" t-shirt.

Edit: Which reminds me, I'll be leaving Gamestop soon to take my new position as a Student Transition Specialist at my community college! Yay!

When I called to ask when the store I preordered it at would have Dark Souls, the guy was obviously going down a checklist of "Do you want to preorder Rage? It's out tomorrow!" "You can cover the cost by trading in games!" "You can pay off the preorder now!"

Dude was hella ill-equipped to be telling you that on the phone. The only time we're supposed to talk to a customer regarding Pre-Orders is in person, phone service is treated pretty seriously where I work, and we work exponentially to assist a customer over the phone, and let them go. We're both busy, no sense in keeping someone on the line, especially concerning pre-orders which can't be done on the phone anyways. Dude was a dunce.

Paying off pre-orders and covering the costs of games utilizing the 30% trade bonus is only supposed to be mentioned during an actual trade in, henceforth providing incentivization after showing what somewhat could get towards a future game, versus the miniscule amount they'll get from their standard trade in. Man, buncha unprofessional slack jawed suckaz working at your local Gamestops.

Also, isn't this supposed to be about Dark Souls?

Costel, I was at the counter buying Catherine the morning it came out and the lady was on the phone. She made gestures to me like she was aggravated having to talk to the people on the phone and was apologetic for making me wait. Then when she got off the phone she apologized and lamented about how they went on and on while she had a customer waiting. Then she proceeds to chat with me and make the entire process take entirely too long while there was a customer waiting behind me.......

That is what we call in work jargon, "a shit-head". Sacrificing one customer's patience for another isn't a Pyrrhic strategy, it's woefully dumb and unprofessional.

Also, agreeing with Remote, can't wait.

Boojiboy I think, is calling for balance TXTSWORD. Why can't we all get along?

Dark Souls is the living embodiment of oppression. Zen and the art of death. It's everything I ever wanted it to be. Perfect fatalism.

Anyways, I haven't been invaded yet, nor have I found a way to co-op with anyone, I'm sure the item is around somewhere.

Playing as a thief, using the Estoc and riposte on everything. I cannot beat the Taurus Demon, don't know if it's the environment, or I'm too low level.

The only game From made that I really don't get is Murakumo.

It makes sense in the context of acting as a testbed for the overboost segments in Armored Core 4/From Answer.

This game is incredible, just made it to the Hydra, and holy shit I cannot win.

First time I fought Moonlight Butterfly, I managed to get it's health down to a quarter, does it possesses any true weaknesses? Or am I just going to have to learn to a dodging pattern?

Had some great multiplayer experiences, was invaded by some grim reaper looking fellow, he lost track of me, I popped up behind him with my bandit knife, and gutted him. It was BRILLIANT.

It's beyond love and lust, it's pure unbridled obsession.

Just beat Kellog's Fire Frosted Flakes, Sen's Fortress is destroying my will, no weapons can touch the Lizard guards, Ceaseless Discharge seems impossible. What other avenues can I explore?

I recently buffed up my Scimitar to a Divine Scimitar+5. It's still not powerful enough.

Love this game. LOVE IT.

Decided to make one last attempt at Ornstein for the evening. Strafing around him, trying to be cautious, he just suddenly turns and jabs me, lifting me up on his spear...

Well my night went pretty much the same way. Grueling.

If it wasn't Ornstein, it was Smough's fucking hammer charge. The further I go, the less I notice any semblance of any other player. It's deeply disturbing.

Just hit a stride and cut an absolute swathe in the game. Only have Seath left to go. I can say for certain that regarding PVP, I either have the dumbest luck in the world, or I posses some modicum of talent regarding PVP. Most people that invade I notice tend to utilize some variation of the Fog Ring/ Lightning Zweihander combo. Since I don't wear heavy armor at all, I can almost always outmaneuver an opponent, and back-stab them. I have never seen anyone walk away from Quelag's Firesword after getting backstabbed.

Nine in a row. Nine invaders in a row, one after another, after another as I made my trek back from the Catacombs. It was like Jeremiah Johnson at that point!

I can feel the end of my first play-through coming.

Just beat the game, chose to kindle the flame. Absolutely beautiful.

Gearing up for my second playthrough, tackled Gwyn with Solaire and a fellow named Brad Madness, it was a quick fight. I'm sure it would have been drastically different solo. Now, upon lifting the veil of secrecy from my strategy guide and the internet, I missed a ton of crap, so plenty to do!

Wait, you got Solaire with you for Gywn? I thought that required giving 30 humanity to Chaos Covenant to open the door to the place where he normally turns hollow?

I attempted to do this... and IDK I left the covenant before I went to LI and the shortcut wasn't open. I'm not sure if you have to still be in the covenant or if I did something else wrong but I was none too pleased.

I honestly had no clue. I opened the shortcut because that was the only initial covenant I joined, and I just farmed humanity because I thought I would get a weapon. Now I know. I killed a bunch of those bugs because my friend said I had to get the Sunlight Maggot Helm to make the Catacombs bearable, lo and behold that saves Solaire? Awesome.
