I've been thinking a lot about the death of arcades lately. I need to find that thread where people posted old pics of arcades, and just stare at it for hours.
There's a new comicon starting this June here in Albuquerque, and I'm going to it primarily to figure out how I could attach an arcade con to it next year. |
I have entered into a pact with two of my friends. We are going to spend the next ten years accumulating mad moneys and then open an arcade together. _________________

Tell me more about Viking, guys. This is the first I've heard of it. So, it's good, but forgettable? _________________

I really, really liked Viking. As far as repetition, I'd say that's mostly just the first hour or two until you unlock the stealth attack (or if you don't use the stealth attack, presumably.) It's the kind of stealth-lite game that I really enjoy. Most of the time you're just taking out camps of demon dudes, but if you look around, you can usually pick half or more of them off before getting into open combat. Occasionally you have to sneak through huge cites, but even then you can get caught and kill everyone to escape depending on how many guys there are. The first time I did one of those, I spent the whole time on the edge of my seat, thinking I was doing it wrong.
To temper my enthusiasm, the first bit is really horrible because you don't have any moves and you have to arggo guys away from the horde to fight them one-on-one and it's a huge hassle. One might not enjoy it as much as I did if they have different musical tastes. With a custom soundtrack of folk metal it was a better heavy metal game than Brutal Legend, but the built-in music is pretty bad. One time during one of the huge battles, there was a glitch and everyone, friendly and not, just stood in one place not doing anything, but that was hilarious and not really a mark against the game. OH! It had two of the worst fetch quests I've ever seen. One ends in a joke, but the other is literally just walking for about 10 minutes and back.
This is, again, probably just me, but I liked the experience of wandering around the lonely environments more than Shadow of the Colossus. It's like $5, I'd say go for it if you liked Spartan (although I think 108 hate hate hates it.) |

What I played of it (not quite half-way through the game) Viking was a really neat open-but-directed world with the stealth-lite components that made for an interesting challenge but the large scale brawling wasn't quite as good as that found in Spartan: Total Warrior. I think they were trying to do a bit too much in Viking so the brawling suffered a bit but was still fun, whereas Spartan is just a very directed game throughout so there's nothing to get in the way of being one lone badass dude in a giant horde of dudes just tearing shit up.
They're both pretty fun overall but it really depends on what kind of experience you want. I loved exploring Viking's world and taking out regiments of dudes and freeing my own dudes who were captured before tackling the large scale city battles so that taking the city would be easier. But I also really liked how Spartan was like zero cruft here are some large-ish levels and several hundred bad guys get to it. _________________

crap, I searched amazon for "viking" and now my Amazon recommendations are filled with viking-themed romance novels.
now tell me more about folk metal! This is a genre I have not heard of, but sounds like it would go great with a viking game! _________________

The entire plot of Modern Warfare 3.
SPOILERS: New York City and Berlin are invaded, yet somehow there is no global thermonuclear war. I guess deterrence theory/mutually assured destruction is thrown out the window (even more so than Modern Warfare 2) when ya gotta look cool. Battlefield 3 seems to be doing the same thing. We are now entering the age of The Battle of Dorking (i.e. imperialist paranoia invasion literature) of videogames. |

aren't we back to the emaciated husk of Infinity Ward for this one? or is Treyarch taking full-time duty since everything good about Infinity Ward peaced out? _________________

It ain't Treyarch. It's whatever remains of Infinity Ward, alongside Sledgehammer and Raven.
Story seems dull and Makarov as the main antagonist misses the point completely, but maybe somewhere in the delivery there'll be subtext about all the political manipulation so that everyone comes out white-washed and smelling of roses whilst Soap and Price are still amoral psychotics.
Severely doubt it, though. Maybe pan-global apocalyptic urban warfare will make up for it. :(
Additionally, just for CoSo. |

Why are Russians the villains in a game that is supposed to be "modern". I guess Imust wait for postmodern warfare to play a game where I annihilate Afghani peasants with predator drones :( _________________ The text will not live forever. The cup are small |

Well the Russians did start flexing in our Alaskan air space in 2008 (for the first time since the cold war) while the F-15's were grounded due to a design flaw that allowed them to fall apart mid-flight. and since then they've been coming into our airspace a couple times a month.
So I think that would be enough to stem from for a fictional tale. |

word on the net is that SONY has the internal PSN Dev network up and running. That apparently means that core gaming functions could be up in a few days. I'm thinking they are pushing to have at least that portion running by the release of L.A. Noire.

Kongregate is teaming up with Tetsuya Mizuguchi for a "Child of Eden -inspired synaesthetic browser game" competition. The grand prize is $10k.
At first I was like {inspiration; the distant rumble of thunder; the peach-gray of a sky just before dawn} but then I noticed that in exchange for the prize money you're basically giving Kongregate all rights to your game and I was like {the disgust of being taken for a rube; the smell of burning plastic; the taste of soap when you expected white chocolate}, and then I decided I could just be inspired by this contest to make my own Mizuguchi-esque synaesthetic game and sell it myself for at least ten times the prize money AND keep all the rights to it and I was like {the satisfaction of finding a better solution to a puzzle than the intended one; the feel of cracking your knuckles as you approach an opponent who has underestimated your strength; the dark red of stage lights on rippling velvet curtains, and the cliffhanging coda of the orchestra, at the end of the second act}. _________________

I was thinking more PC / iOS game with the option to port to XBLA and PSN if it does really well. Flash is old news; all the cool kids these days are using Unity. _________________
