Diagonal shots have a habit of veering off at angles in-between the 8 main directions, like the game is trying to auto aim a bit. It feels really unnatural, especially when you have a shot come off where you wanted while another one goes on its own happy path. Also, aim assist doesn't jive with me in anything. _________________

| I believe they only do that when they've powered up into missiles. |

It's the fisrt time I made it this far.
In the narrow part in the first level, I play it like a shmup, dodging instead of shooting down criminals. _________________

We've made it to page 10!
TODAY'S GAME IS: Prehistoric Isle 2 (Arcade/Neo Geo)
An unexpected sequel from Yumekobo, developers of Pulsar and Blazing Star (they also worked on some NGPC stuff). Somewhat obscure due to never receiving a home release. It's glacially paced and some parts of it feel unfinished. There's some irony in that the original game had a more complex weapons system. But it's nonetheless excellent, and makes creative use of the pre-rendered graphics.
See the How to Play demo for control explanations. The blue chopper is faster and fires a linear shot, the green chopper is slower and fires a wide shot. Their bombs are also different. Unlike in most shmups, your bombs aren't replenished with every life lost.
Scoring info copied from GameFAQs:
| Quote: |
To get the Challenge Star: Just beat any stage with out losing a life.
Bonus Time: Get your weapon to MAX then pick up the same color again to start it.
Score Multiple: Get Bonus Time, and kill the enemies to raise the multiple from x2 to x16. |
Oh yeah, and collecting more of the same weapon pickup during Bonus Time extends the timer.
First: 17420000. Best game over sound ever. |

Don't have this one on my laptop so it's going to have to wait.
Suggestions: Motos (Namco), odd bumping game
My Hero, like one of those Korean comics (by Yang Young-Soon) brought to life
Ninja Combat, over-the-top belt scroller
The Ninja Kids, kind of weirdly racist belt scroller
The Ninja Warriors, 3 monitors, remember to set MAME to 'side by side' under video options once the game starts
p.s. most sickening parallax of all time: Mirai Ninja

By request!
TODAY'S GAME IS: Motos (Arcade)
It's the origin of that "bump everyone else off" minigame that keeps showing up!
Powerups increase your bumping power, jump units allow you to jump with the button (this cracks tiles). You can equip them at the beginning of each stage, but they're one-use. I believe you can equip multiple powerups at once, but I didn't figure out how. There's a 1000 point bonus for pushing off the glowing red diamonds.
First: 20900. The "hurry up" tile-destroying shots can work to your advantage. Unfortunately the huge polka-dot spheres were too heavy to move. |

Motos: 15000
Tried too hard to jump a gap to get the powerup in round 8.
I think the powerup system is interesting, although I couldn't work out what it was doing for the first few levels. |

TODAY'S GAME IS: Hydorah (PC)
Site with download
Must start from the beginning, no resuming or saving. Moving backwards to try an alternate-path stage is okay.
Arguably the best Western indie game ever made. Doesn't have quite the same level of fine-tuning as the classics it borrows from, but it sure comes close. I kinda wish the game wasn't free; I'd feel cheated if I labored over something like this for 3 years, only to not make a single cent off of it. Especially considering what they charge for the average XBLA/Steam turd. He'll send you some extras if you donate, though.
Instructions are in-game. I will say to watch carefully for the little plant pods that shoot vertical thorns when you fly over: they're extremely unfair, and probably shouldn't have been in.
First: 173190. Didn't have the right weapons to tackle Rubinia's boss. Kind of sad that Loco feels obligated to warn you about the game's difficulty when you start it up. Seems like he doesn't have enough confidence in his work. |

5251000 for Prehistoric Isle 2. Wasn't prudent enough on the second boss and hung right in front of him for too long.
6100 for Motos. Really disappointing score for me since I grew up playing the Namco Museum compilations on PSX. _________________ HeavyViper@Twitter ~~~ HeavyViper@Soundcloud

Given that I sat down with Hydorah last week and managed to finish it with a score of just over a million points, I think it would be more fair for me to sit this round out. _________________ HeavyViper@Twitter ~~~ HeavyViper@Soundcloud

Guys, I just realized Hydorah has no limits on the milking of certain bosses. Unlike in Gradius, they don't self-destruct when time's up. :(
Most of us probably aren't good/insanely patient enough for it to matter, though. |

SHV I ultra appreciate your effort. I have Hydorah burned onto a CD right here, but am going to turn off this computer because this chair makes my back hurt and my laptop has a habit of dying, but I promise to play it urutora soon. _________________ My Hawt Blog Vita Games

First - 288,410
Chaindied for a while on the space battleship, and then I lost my last life on the boss. Spent too much time taking out the auxiliary cannons and not enough time going for the big laser, so I got crushed. _________________

I'd be all for this actually. It would give us more time to appreciate and understand each game, which might in turn lead to more "BEST" scores. Even two or three days would be great. It doesn't have to be a week. _________________ HeavyViper@Twitter ~~~ HeavyViper@Soundcloud

no score from me, hydorah is unplayable on my computer. sound constantly skipping, then when i get to the asteroids a short way into the first stage, the frame rate plummeted, and i'd get killed without even seeing it. thanks for turning this into an obligation, though _________________
