First: 22500 (crapped out on the boss fight, mainly)

I want to put in a vote for Tower of Doom and New Zealand Story. Amazing idea for a thread, btw. Really breathes new enjoyment into MAME.

Another vote: Great Swordsman

Actually better yet, Gladiator, which hardly anyone (including me) has played

Request: more games from Bally/Sente 1984-1985. Chicken Shift, for example.

Nearly beat round 3, but she managed a spectacular comeback (helped, I think, by her ridiculously annoying voice)

Thanks for picking another Sente game! Never heard of this one before.

I requested this but I had never played it before. Big fan of Great Swordsman though.

So I got 34900, which was pretty poor. Might come back for a 'best' score later.

Let's play Red Alert, a depressingly pessimistic cold-war version of Space Invaders.

Dyna Gear: 86310. Not too shameful this time. Got tricked by the stegasaurus boss: I thought he was dead so I ran under him, then he came back to life and crushed me.

Roger looks like blond John Romero in the intro cinematic.

I played Wardner but my score is too poor to admit publicly.

Do you think they were trying to call it "Werdna", after the Wizardry series?

I got exactly 80000. I was doing really well, hadn't lost a life, until that stupid water section. Then I couldn't avoid the spiders.

86900. Might try again.

/edit second try was 148600. It does help a lot if you try to conserve bullets, since your weapons constantly downgrade while you're firing them.

Sorry, Bennett, but it turns out I can't feature Fire Trap. It uses two sticks, which is a problem for those like myself without a dual-analog PC-compatible pad.

Either use a keyboard, or map the right stick to your four buttons and the left stick to your d-pad. Simple.

I got 28000 for Noboranka - about 25000 from my first life, and then it was a bit of a fiasco.

No, Katamari PSP controls are awful.

I mean, ultimately it's up to you, but this is nothing like that because Fire Trap (like crazy climber) uses two digital sticks, not two analogue sticks. I'm able to play Crazy Climber and Karate Champ perfectly competently using either a gamepad or a keyboard.

First: 36800. Never played the arcade version before, but this brings back memories! The home computer versions topped the UK charts for about a year. In Australia, we mainly got UK magazines for some reason.

The home computer versions had this minigame where you had to shoot the bad guy with a hostage.

Yeah, Tower of Doom! Give me one game I can beat you on!!!

Failing that, Moonwalker, Escape from the Planet of the Robot Monsters, Dynamite Düx.

I know you wanted Tower of Doom, Bennett, but I find it just painful to play. You need to triple tap the joystick to turn around and run! And it lacks the incredibly useful command moves of its sequel. Mystara is a vast improvement in every way, single-player balance aside.

Man, you're crazy (even though your view is widely accepted). Tower of Doom is an actually viable solo experience. And the controls ride the correct side of the 'too complex' line. And its levels are far, far more dramatic and exciting. To me, Mystara is the prime example of a sequel that adds a lot of features and content and solves a lot of 'problems', while losing sight of what was good about the original game.

Ah well, I reckon you'll probably do better than me on Mystara, but let's see how I go.

I dunno, Tower of Doom's levels are pretty boring and sparse compared to Mystara. It's got more DM narration, and that's about it. The combat feels plodding and incomplete without the special moves.

I'm surprised you think the levels are boring and sparse. There's a lot more in the way of bespoke traps, for one thing.

The combat still has a very large number of moves, each with tactical applications. Let's take just weapon moves:
- attack
- crouch attack
- jump attack
- dash attack
- dashing jump attack
- dashing shoulder barge
- sliding attack (this one is unduly hard to pull off, I'll admit)
- strong attack (tap forward and attack)
- shield block
- riposte (block then quickly attack, uses a separate animation)
- diving attack
- coup de grace (attack downed opponent)

That's 12 separate moves... I dunno, I think that's probably sufficient when you have only two buttons. I agree that the juggle attacks and the slide attacks are more fun to pull off in Mystara, though.

Well, you don't have to add it to your table, but here's my 1-credit score for Tower of Doom (difficulty 2) in case anyone wants to take me on. I guess it's not really a 'first' score since I've played this game a lot, and nowhere near my all-time best, but not bad. The dark elf got me.

A lot of D&D games and books feature a 'retributive strike' which involves breaking a powerful wizard's staff - an idea that was present, IIRC, in the 1st-ed Gygax-authored D&D manuals (which probably means that it originated in some high-fantasy novel). I think the idea must have also been mentioned in the Dragonlance books, since it was featured in every Dragonlance game adaptation that I played. It's an interesting idea for use in a videogame, since it creates a climactic storytelling moment that can be initiated by the player at a time of their choice. Like Prospero, drowning his books.

I wonder how many people playing Mystara trigger the final strike before the final boss?

Only 41500. Was doing fine until that narrow bit then suddenly lost all my lives in about 5 seconds. I would have been mad if I'd put a quarter in for that.

Don't have this one on my laptop so it's going to have to wait.

Suggestions: Motos (Namco), odd bumping game
My Hero, like one of those Korean comics (by Yang Young-Soon) brought to life
Ninja Combat, over-the-top belt scroller
The Ninja Kids, kind of weirdly racist belt scroller
The Ninja Warriors, 3 monitors, remember to set MAME to 'side by side' under video options once the game starts

p.s. most sickening parallax of all time: Mirai Ninja

Motos: 15000
Tried too hard to jump a gap to get the powerup in round 8.
I think the powerup system is interesting, although I couldn't work out what it was doing for the first few levels.
