that is a good question!
"better" is subjective. the motivation for making this game is to make a game that is certainly as involved, complicated, and nuanced as starcraft, though also easier to understand while watching.
it's more or less like what would happen if you combined third strike and starcraft. (and it played like a third-person shooter designed by treasure.)
i'm sure some people are going to hate it! though hey, we are intent on Partying On Our Own Terms (POOOT).
i keep getting scared that someone is going to make a game like it -- and then they don't! the first-person / third-person shooter genre keeps chasing its own tail. so i played a lot of board games and card games and street fighter and starcraft and watched a lot of competitive sports and then i was like "ok". so now: ziggurat. it's pretty cool! i mean, it's not finished at all, though we sure do have a good six hours of fun every once in a while just playing it and cackling like jerks.
in short, ziggurat may not be better than starcraft, though it is certainly better than halo and chess. _________________

but is it better than Limited Edition Chess Featuring Halo Characters
tim I just lost in some starcraft :(
I dunno though starcraft is pretty easy to understand while watching I think that is part of its recent success. it's only while playing that you are able to realize how impossible it is to be as good at anything as the top starcraft players are at starcraft |

starcraft isn't that easy to watch if you've never played the game!
and yes it is better than halo chess :-3 _________________

really though if you make a good shooter that feels right and offers no frills or gimmicks multiplayer and looks snappy I'll be happy
hope you've been playing your Quake ^_^ |

i heard justin wong was recruited to be a playtester for ziggurat and decided that he had wasted his life on street fighter.

would anyone be interested in doing a SB only, just-for-fun starcraft 2 tournament? i'd love an excuse to try my hand at casting some replays or something.
edit: actually, i should probably make a new thread for this. _________________ -pat m.

Dota 2's streaming live right now, with a metric ton of lag, watching an animated 'please wait' screen for a good chunk of your time and then being confused because of your lack of knowledge of items and units from Dota.
I mean I played it, like a goodly long while ago. As far as people are saying, it's Dota remade on a different engine with everything pretty much the same, no enhancements as of yet. So if you know the scene well enough, I guess it will make sense. I do appreciate the shoutcasters being extremely enthusiastic.
Myself, I play League of Legends at a decent level and I know the items by sight so tournies livestreamed are extremely transparent. This, I sort of understand what's going on but it's such a different beast that I can't say if a team is doing well unless it is heavily weighted in their favour in terms of kills and map control.
Anyway, to paraphrase the people I was listening to (because fuck if they could keep a decent stream to the game on their livestream), the Chinese vs Chinese game was a boring 70 minute farm fest where one team was out-picked at the start but apparently 'how long you survive' is a metric they are measuring for standings so they just didn't give up.
I switched to the English Commentator livestream after that for M5 and MYM. It ended in M5's favour when their Spectre, Nightstalker and Crystal Maiden (sic?) started snowballing and MYM had to buy back to keep them pushed back from their barracks a large number of times. And then still dying not 15 seconds after they bought back.
Na'vi and Scythe match now. Don't know either of them.
Level 1 fight very exciting! Scythe initiated poorly and two of them were taken out when they kept moving in and were attacked from their flank. |

I watched large portions of MLG!
Not that many great matches, honestly. I had Bomber--pretty easy call--but I thought Puma would place higher than fifth. I wish they'd stream more of the open bracket and losers stuff, especially when they have miles of dead air to fill. I would have liked to have seen, say, Spanishiwa or Demuslim tear up the losers stuff. Hell, at one point they had Puma and Nada playing at the same time as DRG and Hero and yet both streams were just showing the Puma/Nada matches. That kind of shit is pretty dumb.
Nada definitely had the best games of the (streamed) tournament, but the later rounds were plagued by a lot of surprise all-in, which is kind of big in the Korean pro metagaming scene right now. Doesn't make for exciting matches (unless July is involved).
Wish I saw the Huk/Nada run back (Huk eliminated Nada in GSL less than a week ago in a pretty great set). |

Yeah, the redundant streams pissed me off too.
Was DRG vs Nada streamed? I had to go out for awhile and it had gone past those games by the time I got back. |

| Yeah, DRG/Nada was on the stream. Wasn't a great set. DRG rolled pretty hard. The Nada/Puma set before it was probably the best of the day, though. |

In continuing my trend of watching the vastly not-as-popular e-games, League of Legends completely fucked up their custom spectator program for the first day and only the first full match of CLG vs Crs was sorta streamed. This is the same spectator program used during the tournament in Germany which also had issues. These issues were the same that they ran into that day!
Riot has an extremely terrible trend of not doing enough QA before rolling out their shit so when it comes time for the big leagues, like they're trying to do with getting in MLG and IEM, they get egg on their face time and time again. Hopefully this will teach them to test the shit out of their code first. |

bumping my Posting Alone thread
I haven't watched much starcraft lately, but we just got two WHITE HOT semi finals at IEM China . idra beasting the hell out of Puma with flawless ZvT, and the unlikely match up of elfi, whom I had never even seen play before, and hasuobs throwing down a ridiculous 5 game PvP where elfi came back from 2-0, including like a 30 minute zero expand game where hasuobs went zealot/phoenix and somehow pushed it to the brink before being caught distance mining from the gold on metalopolis.
Mr. Bitter was so happy with the idra wins that he started hugging him in the interview. idra was so happy with the idra win that he didn't even kill bitter when that happened. |

| Man, the lack of LAN in SC2 is really starting to get embarassing. IPL3 has been completely fucked over today because of internet problems. Heaven forbid they be able to take a cord from one computer to the other and make this shit happen. |

GUYS
CHECK IT OUT
if you have any interest in possibly seeing what the whole starcraft thing is all about, MLG Providence is about to start. it has the best player pool of any SC2 tournament to date. MLG's format can be a little dumb, but there comes a point when there are just so many great matchups that it doesn't matter. |

| Naniwa so far over two days: win over MVP, two wins over Nestea. impressive. he even talked a bunch of shit about Nestea and then gave him the thumbs down after the second win just a few minutes ago. Naniwa wants to be the top tier heel in SC2, I guess! Nestea was really pissed off! |
