| Yeah, there are two things you cannot do and hope to live for very long: declare war with a high infamy, and declare war with a low stability and a lot of colonies/conquered territories/religious strife. you will just get rolled no matter how good you look. |

I just read that thread and DAIS was like I hate Halo because you can't stack things
first thought: DAIS didn't like a video game?
second thought: hey man I remember this one time in multiplayer me and my bros stacked ourselves to the ceiling of hang 'em high it was awesome
and then I keep reading and it turned out 2005 me thought the same thing |

I did that with Mars Matrix once! I was reallly tired though, and I think I practically fell asleep with the controller in my hands. But I wasn't actually sleeping, just in a barely conscious state going on reflex. I was on like stage 2, then the next thing I know I was snapping out of it and in stage 4 with a pretty good score. |
You hit the zone! I've talked millions of times on here about Parsec47, but it's my favorite and I used to have that happen all the time. STG zen is absolutely a thing. |
oh man I haven't played Parsec47 in years I immediately want to fire it up. |

other places you hear about this sort of thing a lot:
Basketball
Tennis
I'm almost certain there's a body of literature around the effect in those two sports |

you should at least play a couple of hours of Chrono Cross--it'll tell you enough to let you determine whether or nor you'll want to stick with it. the game just magnifies itself from there on: more and more beautiful, more and more retarded; the battle system and advancement systems become more and more unmanageable, but more and more interesting; the story takes up more and more of your time, with less and less payoff; the world gorges itself on more and more inventive and memorable scenes and areas, with less and less cohesiveness. the game is almost like a twin to vagrant story, but where the downside of that game is that all the idiocy is confined to things that make the game impossible to play but yet somehow still cohesive and purposeful, the idiocy here is sprawling and unthinking and amateur, and yet the game remains utterly comprehensible.

I want to argue, but I really can't. Or rather, the things you say are true, but the narrative still definitely blows. it is almost a sin that it actually makes sense, that it is something you can piece together and see how and where someone actually thought about it. but I almost pause, because the FFVIII comparison is extremely apt, and I find myself at all turns completely unable to not love everything about that game, right down to every second of complete, unfiltered idiocy. |

I have only an amount of time to play video games these days exactly equal to the amount of time I can purposefully (rather than aimlessly; accidentally) waste in order to scare or trick myself into not wasting any further in the face of mounting deadlines buttressed by work the quality of which I cannot possibly hope to create. which means: though the game I want to tackle is Dark Souls, followed, possibly, by Xenoblade, I can really only play things that don't require a commitment of time or a definite sense of progress. and so I played some Defcon today and yesterday, and some more Frozen Synapse before it.
these games are kind of similar to one another. really similar, actually. they're good! simple, pretty, intuitive strategy that I still nevertheless suck at. and feel satisfied with my sucking.
so there's that steam sale. I did not even know, until today, that steam even offered Rainbow Six 3, which I have at various times been interested in enough to pine for, and yet, apparently, not interested in enough to type its name into steam. but now I have it, and it looks like exactly what I want to play right now (but can't). so hopefully I dive into that in about a month (assuming there is no--surprise!--tangled, insurmountable mess of hurdles and blocks to properly playing it on modern systems, which is the case for an alarming amount of older games that steam still decides to charge for, and say nothing of the charging.) |

I want an entire game that is just the usefulness of the fire in Survival Kids.
You Merge a Stick and Tree Bark to get Kindling, and you can start a fire anywhere there's room (except inside a shelter). Then:
-You can cook meat and fish to make them edible (and then use spices to preserve them so they last longer)
-You can light a torch in order to explore caves/see the whole screen when it's night
-If you've lit the fire by a bee hive, you can burn leaves in order to smoke out the bees and get the honey.
-If you've lit the fire by a tree shelter, you won't be disturbed by animals during the night.
You can't light a fire when it rains, of course...unless you go into a cave. There's something thrilling about hunting animals in the rain, then retreating to a nearby cave to cook the meat.
I wish the character wasn't ten years old, so that they could plausibly carry more tools at once.
I wish Survival Kids 2 was in English, even though it seems more like it's about adventure than survival.
I wish I would get around to checking out the Lost in Blue games.
I wish I had perfect immortal teeth.
I wish sleep was real. |
you could just play minecraft and pretend there's a story |

definitely no screening process. we're not that professional. basically the way it works is every now and then the ball gets rolling on some topic until enthusiasm overcomes SB inertia and then there is some kind of sign up process in the podcast forum and you just put your name in the hat and show up. we more or less trust people to at least not be terrible. |

| I don't think it's true either--from what I recall, they've always planned an MMO after this particular game. I'm sure the mechanics will be similar, etc., etc., but SB has a pretty annoying tendency lately of clumsily reading boogeymen and idols into everything in some attempt to support a thesis that doesn't quite exist. You know something is wrong if I'm agreeing with DAIS |

welcome to what people that don't post on neogaf do their entire lives. this thesis has nothing to do with Game X or Game Y--in fact, it doesn't even have anything to do with games at all. "why do X when Y is much more ____?" my not playing kingdoms of curt schilling has absolutely nothing to do with dark souls, it has to do with my not having a reason for playing kingdoms of curt schilling |
