MESS should, but I've never tried it myself. |

| ok my two friends went to gamescom. I'm trying to convince them to make a substantial post on it in our private forum so that I can transplant parts of it to here. They are both pretty well interested in DOTA and LoL, so they should have especially good impressions on those. |

Alright, I got one of them to write a decent summarization of what gamescom was like to actually be at, and he wrote some short impressions of games that he saw and/or played. Here is what he initially posted and then after that I asked a couple of questions and he wrote a bit more:
| Quote: |
We were there for the entire weekend, Friday to Sunday. We spent about 4 hours there on Friday and about 3 on Sunday, but we spent maybe 6 or 7 on Saturday. Saturday was, by far, the worst day to be there. There were so many people, it was hot, movement between halls was slow, and it was alternately fun and smelly. Meaning, it was fun when it wasn't smelly.
It was huge, way bigger than I expected. I've never been to a videogame convention (or any other convention, for that matter) before, but I expected/hoped that it would be big and fun with a decent amount of people, but not so many people that it would take longer than an hour to wait in line for a game. I didn't realize that GamesCom is really, really popular now, that there are advertisements for it all over the city, and that essentially everyone turns up for it, since it is over summer vacation and primarily on the weekend (which is a time when, in Germany, EVERYTHING ELSE is closed, so there isn't anything else to do). The day tickets were also really cheap (the equivalent of $15), so it's not like the price would turn some people away.
Friday, we basically just walked around the entire convention center to get a sense of stuff. We made sure to hit the booths we really wanted to hit as soon as possible, but didn't wait in line to play anything (except Street Fighter X Tekken) or watch any movies or demos this day. We made a list of the stuff that we wanted to really see during the rest of the weekend.
This turned out to be a huge mistake. We didn't know that attendance on Saturday was going to double (at least) from Friday. Saturday was basically terrible. I wouldn't say that I didn't have fun... but it could have been a lot better. The lines to play games were ridiculously long. On Friday night, we talked to this kid from Canada. He said that, on Friday morning, he arrived at the front doors at 8:30 when they opened at 10. He said there were already a million people there. As soon as the doors opened, he went IMMEDIATELY to the Diablo 3 demo and had to wait in line for 1.5 hours to play for 10 minutes. This was on FRIDAY, and he arrived 1.5 hours BEFORE the convention even opened. Imagine Saturday.
Now apply that imagination to every other game. The line for Dark Souls was triple the length on Saturday as it was on Friday, and compared to the other games at the convention Dark Souls is obscure, obscure, obscure.
This has turned into a rant of sorts... so on to the games. We played Dark Souls, which was great and identical to Demon's Souls, and hard as hell. We played Street Fighter X Tekken once, and I won like a boss with Marduk and Sagat. We saw a trailer/gameplay demo/presentation on the MMO Secret World, which is WoW with a different skin. We didn't play, but heard from the Canadian kid that the Star Wars MMO The Old Republic is WoW with a different skin (like we didn't know that already). We watched Silent Hill (up close - it's as good as the other Silent Hills) and played Never Die (which is Devil May Cry with a different skin) and Zombie Apocalypse (which is Dead Nation with a different skin and worse).
The Worst Shit - The Rant Continued
Blizzard had the biggest booth and the longest lines. Sony had an annoyingly loud and seemingly constant stage show of breakdancers holding PS Move sticks, which no one cares about. Many booths had long lines for what you thought would be a playable demo, but what were really just presentations and no notification on the outside to tell you what it was. So, you would wait in line for what you thought was a demo and would be disappointed. Skyrim had a ridiculously long line, as did Mass Effect 3, as did Battlefield, as did etc, etc, etc... There were competitive stage shows (Starcraft, LoL) but no easily accessible schedule of games.
The League of Legends booth was, by far, the most disappointing thing, had the most idiotic setup, and was the least worth the time you would have to put in. I can expand on this more if necessary.
The Most Memorable Shit
There was an exhibit for the Art of Games that I took pictures of.
There was an awesome playable demo of Castlevania: Harmony of Despair. It's 6 players, it's Castlevania, you can pick your character from a long list, there was no line (ever). It was probably the best game I played there, and I played it multiple times.
We watched a weird demo of Jagged Alliance because the other guy we went with wanted to, and it was interesting, though not very informative.
Probably the biggest thing we waited in line to experience was the PS Vita. The booth setup was stupid, stupid. I can expand on this more if you want... but the system was ok. The analog sticks are nice. The augmented reality stuff seems gimicky right now. The camera is good. It feels identical to a heavy PSP. The worst part is the finger placement - almost the entire back of the system is a touch screen, and that's EXACTLY where I want to rest my fingers. The game I demoed didn't use it, but I can easily see how it would be a problem if it did. The place they crafted to put your fingers is not very good.
We saw a game called Skull Girls or something, cool looking sprite-based 2D fighter.
Oh yeah, and we saw DotA 2, sorta. |

We did not play Skyrim, which is really unfortunate because that's one of the top 5 games I wanted to check out when I was there. But like Diablo 3 and Modern Warfare 3, the line for Skyrim was RIDICULOUSLY long. They were, however, playing what I think was an exclusive GamesCom trailer nonstop on a giant screen right above the line, so I saw that. I'm betting it's on YouTube now, so you could search for GamesCom Skyrim trailer or something and probably find it. Assuming, that is, that it was an exclusive (which I'm not positive on). Sorry I don't have more details on it. I guess I was a little more interested in seeing games that I was not already going to purchase no matter what - a category that Skyrim does not fall into.

i asked if the dragons in Skyrim still turned abruptly/sharply while flying, as if they were in a game from 1996, but he couldn't say for sure as he didn't see the actual game running.

DotA 2/LoL
DotA 2 didn't have a playable demo - what they had was a 1.5 million dollar tournament displayed on huge screens and being played almost around the clock. They gave out T-shirts and armbands. My impressions are that it is DotA with better graphics. It DOES look really cool but honestly is nothing to really talk about. I don't think anything is different, except that Roshan looks super, duper, bad, ass. However, my impressions come only from watching the games being played, and they had a livestream that could have been watched and gotten the same impressions from.
LoL was the worst experience of the convention, partially because my expectations were so high. Essentially, the LoL booth was the worst, busiest, most packed, most confusing, and least organized booth in the entire convention. The entire booth consisted of about 15 computers, 10 of which were dedicated to playing the new game mode, Dominion. The other computers were dedicated to make sure people could play Dominion. They had ropes cordoning off the area in which you could play Dominion, and outside of those ropes (and high up on the booth) were a couple of large TV screens displaying the game as it was being played.
The problem, you say? There were a couple hundred people crowded around every single available side of the booth during the ENTIRE CONVENTION. People were so thick that you couldn't even get up next to the ropes. There seemed to be no opening with which to enter, no line formed for the purpose of queuing for a chance to play the game, and no employees outside of the ropes to answer questions (probably out of fear, which is somewhat understandable, considering). No one knew what was going on, or how to get inside, or anything. It was dumb, dumb. People just stood around outside of the ropes for hours, watching other people play the new game mode.
Every other booth had a clearly defined line that was marked off and discernable, with an employee standing at the head of the line to control entry. You could go and talk to this employee and ask him what the line was for and where it started. Easy, even if the line was fucking massive. LoL was one of the most popular games at the convention, on par with Skyrim and Diablo 3. Why they did not have their shit figured out is beyond me.
Castlevania
This game was awesome! Imagine the old school Castlevanias. Graphics like Symphony of the Night. 10 characters to choose from. 6 players possible. The biggest difference is that in this game you can see a LOT more than just the room you're in. You can see maybe 4 rooms away, in all directions, at all times. It also seems to be slightly less open-ended, meaning there are more clearly defined paths to take through the castle.
Jagged Alliance
There were two games, actually. One was Jagged Alliance Online, which was playable but I didn't play it. The other was a regular Jagged Alliance game. The trailer we watched had gameplay footage, and the guy that we were with who was really into it was really happy after we watched it, so I guess it will be good. They are both for PC, and possibly other systems. |
The Art of Games
This was an exhibit of artwork and concept artwork from various videogames.
He doesn't remember what games these came from

That's very good to hear about LoL. Not that it was disappointing, just that I now have some honest feedback I can pass on to make sure things are better next time. Thanks!

And Ys Origin, now that I look at it. And "KOF XIII-V." And Glory of Heracles--doesn't Nintendo own the rights to that?
Still, a ballin' fake list. |
I don't completely discount this list...
Malicious was just announced in Japan as download-only release for Vita. That would have been an awfully good fake prediction.
As for Ys Origin, it makes a LOT of sense. Falcom has already stated they are working on Vita games, one targeting launch. In order to hit launch, it would make sense (and be consistent with Falcom's PSP Ys releases) to port one of their existing PC titles. Origin is downright conspicuous as a game that would be a perfect fit. It would really surprise me if they don't port it to Vita eventually.
And Paon does at least partially own the rights to the Heracles series. The series was Data East for the first 5 games, but when they went bankrupt former Data East employees founded Paon and bought the rights to a lot of the IPs. Nintendo may have some interest in the series, but possibly only for the most recent game (just checked my US copy - copyright and trademark notices in the manual say Paon and Nintendo). Also, this listing is so far out there that it's almost something I'd see as impossible to make up if it wasn't true. Who would just predict that if they were making a fake list? |

Well, this writeup is the reason why I didn't go this year, although I was <so> close to going anyway. Last year they had 245000 visitors, this year around 26x.000 people … too much for the exhibition centre. And the reason why they moved from east- to west-germany was - you guessed it - the rising number of visitors over the first few years.
Anyway, Saturday was so bad that they stopped letting people in (limit was around 60.000 people) and stopped selling tickets from 1pm until "later on" when things normalized again. _________________
