So dogu are these anthropomorphic clay figures that were created by the native peoples of Japan during the Joumon period (14,000 –400 BCE). They're historically/culturally/artistically significant, partially because they display an extremely sophisticated sense of artistry and personal expression at a time when humans barely had anything you'd call culture. I mean, these things coincide with the innovation of sustainable agriculture (planting and harvesting rice paddies, specifically).

One of the most intriguing aspect of the dogu is that we don't really know why they were created. For decades they were thought to be "spiritual idols" or something of the like. But as far as I can tell, that was just a guess. More recently, archaeologists have supposed that they might have been some sort of collectible toy (which offers a sort of historical harmony too perfect to ignore).

But what's even more interesting about dogu (to me) is the way they're embraced by contemporary Japanese pop culture. I don't really get it. I mean, the modern Japanese are not linearly connected to the creators of the dogu through genetics or cultural influence. And yet I feel like I see them all over the place, particularly the shakokidogu variety. Maybe there's some design aesthetic to the dogu that today's Japanese people respect. I can only guess.

Anyway, I thought it would be cool if we tried to catalog all the instances of dogu in video games. I'm gonna burn some of the obvious ones right off the bat (in my next post). But I'm really excited to see what you guys come up with.

Actually, I didn't know that one!

Sorry for the delay. I ended up getting distracted by life stuff. I'm gonna list all the ones from the Wikipedia article on dogu and then a few more that I think are fairly obvious.

You guys can always beat me to it, though.

Oh, and I'm open to talking about designs that are possibly influenced by dogu as well. I have one in mind, actually. I feel like the image of dogu exist in the Japanese zeitgeist and indirectly influence plenty of stuff, but--y'know--I'm not Japanese, so I'm not prepared to argue that too strongly.

Shadow of the Colossus is, I think, a great example of a game whose design aesthetic was at least indirectly influenced by dogu, if not specifically inspired by them.

I don't think any of the colossi are based exactly on a dogu, in the same way that so many of the above examples are based on the Shakokidogu. But I do think the colossi in general, and especially Gaius and Mallus, owe more to dogu than to any other ancient sculpture. Maybe that's part of why their design seems so original.

Funny that Huitzil is supposed to be an Aztec robot!

Didn't know that dogu were a classified thing, much less that they were Ainu creations.

Urgh. I know a dogu attacks you during the moon level of Strikers 1945, but I can't find footage on YouTube.

You'd think more people would want to post videos of experimental WW2 planes fighting Nazi robots on the moon.

And I know that there was some sort of C-grade puzzle game involving aliens that look exactly like shakokidogu....

Pretty sure that the statue boss in Nier looks like this. I can't find a good picture of it online though. Maybe if I knew its name to search for that specifically?

Too true!

I have to say that I'm pretty disappointed so far that the only instances we're finding are of shakokidogu.

It's not surprising. I was just hoping that we might be able to find some notable exceptions.

Monkey-type colossus? That would have been cool to see.
