Bethesda claims they have a new QA tool to help eliminate (or at least vastly reduce) bugs this time around. We'll see; I'm not exactly holding my breath but it didn't stop me from pre-ordering the game months ago. I wish they'd test their games better but the end product is such where if this is what we have to put up with, so be it. It is going to annoy me but it won't prevent me from playing their shit. Plus, hey, patches. New Vegas is actually pretty fucking stable now! Somehow!
(For PC anyway; woe betide you if you got the PS3 version, which is not a mistake I will ever make again) _________________

For real. I mean, what's the point of journeying in Elder Scrolls if you can't mutilate genitals? _________________

Well, I guess I bought it today.
Preloaded and ready to go.
I think the thing I'm most excited about is making a character that doesn't look like the guy in every single piece promotional art ever.
That seriously bugs me for some reason. |

I really need to stop playing games where my main excitement about them is "making a guy". That's... why I played dragon age 2. |

You should check out the Saints Row 3 demo. It's basically just the character creator which is apparently quite robust. _________________

It's become a work vs. play thing. Some people in my position give up on games entirely, I just have a strong segregation blocker so Things I Work on and Things I Play have very strong mental distinctions, even when they overlap (i.e. Dark Souls).
It works. At least for me. The things I wanna play aren't even on the same radar as the things I'm doing for my job, regardless of anything up to and including them being the same game.
Besides this: I've never worked on a Bethesda game. I never want to, really. I want to play them. I never, ever want to see a preliminary build even out of curiosity. I want to see the real shippable thing, and I am going to love the fuck out of it. I get to play this one. Bring it on.
It's pretty much this and Mass Effect 3 that I am fucking squirming to play. Expect another one of these threads when that ships. _________________

Right now for me the dilemma is choosing between an Argonian or a Dark Elf. I usually always play as a Dark Elf in a TES game but this time around the Argonians look so damn cool. I might do something dumb and play two different characters on different saves at the same time and just regularly switch between them. _________________

I'm leaning towards Orc because playing as a Nord seems way too obvious and I wanna subvert that at least a little, but I'm also very much along for the ride on this one and playing Big Aggressive Species seems apt in a way I'll find enjoyable. I'm sure playing Female Wood Elf who becomes Nordic Hero will be amusing in its own right but my first time through I'm willing to go according to script a bit.
Or maybe not. We'll see what fits once I have it in hand. I'm really just gonna roll with where it takes me. Male Orc is where I'm leaning but that's just based on conjecture so far, I'm totally open to changing it up based on what I see. _________________

Oh my god the next 26 hours or however long until it unlocks are going to be excruciating for me. I hope Steam unlocks it early so I can start playing it tomorrow night instead of mid-morning Friday. _________________

We are torturing one of our CS guys at work by repeatedly announcing the time -- in minutes, then in seconds -- that he's going to have to wait before he can play Skyrim. _________________

I played one session of Oblivion. Got out of the industry dungeon, wandered around trying to get into the Mage's Guild because I built a mage, and then got bored.
With most games - even the most mediocre iPhone games or crappy action titles - I usually get excited enough to play at least until the first boss/quest/whatever. with Oblivion I just got bored. I feel like I should give it another chance, but I really don't want to.

This (for no particularly good reason) brings to mind a discussion in which someone claimed that single player games were for people who were bad at games. As the conversation unfolded, it became evident that he had no interest in games that proved him wrong because "ikaruga what is that obscure completely unheard of jap game I don't care about that." Additionally, he believed WoW pvp was the pinnacle of competitive gaming. That's when I decided not to discuss games on the internet outside of selectbutton.
I'll likely rent skyrim, be excited while "making a dude" and imagine the character I'll pretend he is... then explore for a bit... maybe even a couple of hours... then feel empty and depressed about the whole thing and take it back to blockbuster (yes blockbuster shut up). |

Breaking the Holy Writs by linking to Kotaku but oh well: The Elder Scrolls games were really fucking ugly.
Don't be That Guy who says Daggerfall actually looked good for its time. It didn't. At all. >:(
Don't even get me started on the fist-eatingly horrible Staying At The Inn music that used to drive my dad so nuts that he'd demand I played the game with the sound off and I don't blame him.
Neither was Battlespire (although it had a pretty character creation screen) or Redguard.
Also apparently there was an nGage ES game -- I found it because I was sure Kotaku missed a few ES games in there -- and I haven't played that one fuck fuck fuck no I am not digging up an nGage emulator fuck you.

it may not have "looked good", but it was a marvel in terms of graphics/atmosphere.
Speaking of which, does anyone know where I might find complete sets of the sprites from Arena/Daggerfall?

that "things I ate" article was already making me think of The Unreal World, but I have to wonder how much success Bethesda might have with making a mode that imitates the starting scenarios from TUW.
Basically, the game (TUW) is a roguelike, but it does all the random generation at the start, and instead of delving through dungeons you spend most of your time traversing the wilderness, searching for settlements or other points of interest. As part of your character creation, you pick a starting scenario before the world is generated - this will determine where you start/what is nearby, what state you are in/what your immediate concerns are, etc. As you can see, the scenarios can be both positive or negative, and from any of them you can choose to run a game course as a form of tutorial, or work with your own challenges, either simple or the more complex kinds you find on the forums.
(granted, the focus on this kind of survival seems to have developed in part due to the relatively shallow nature of other game mechanics, but it still makes the game very unique).
Bethesda is obviously working with pre-crafted worlds that they want to push you in certain directions, but it'd be nice if they made a second option besides the standard tutorial dungeon, where you could pick a scenario that related to what you are most interested in about the gameplay/world and just go straight to that, possibly choosing to activate some kind of light tutorial that would suggest things to try and interesting places to look at nearby. Hell, disable the main quest entirely if you gotta.
Ah, well, I'm sure somebody could add that with a mod...

oh jeez, forgot about that.
Hey, if you have any luck with N-gage emulation, write a bit, okay? It seems pretty convoluted. |

fuckin love the winter theme from daggerfall
yes daggerfall was ugly for its time it looked worse than Strife (not picking a game with amazing art direction like doom but something a bit more representative of 2.5d games at the time)
NPCs vacillated between hand drawn sprites and donkey kong style 3d models rendered into 2d sprites and the hand drawn sprites were only drawn from the front so they always rotated to face you. That being said, DaggerXL has some lovely distant landscapes going on.
Morrowind had good concept art and plenty of nice environments but jesus every single character was hideous.
Oblivion was solid ugly
Skyrim is solid ugly _________________

There's my character, she's a total babe. She's also going to be an absolute brigand. I just levelled up for the first time by pickpocketing a ring from the innkeeper!
I don't know who this character is but I'm pretty sure it's Saul Tigh.
The first and only thing I've eaten so far is venison!
Also get ready for berrypick extravaganza again. _________________ I'm on Steam! ----- I'm on Youtube!

So the game is getting a lot of really good reviews but that hardly tells us anything. RPS said it was the new Best Elder Scrolls Game Ever, ousting Morrowind. Less controversially PCGamer raves about it without treading into hyperbole-territory. I particularly like that they mention the world is chock full of neat, unique places and areas to discover in comparison to Oblivion's "sparse repetition".
When I turned my computer on a minute ago Steam downloaded something for Skyrim that was 18 mb in size but the game still remains locked for me for presumably another five or so hours. I am probably going to stay up really late playing it if it actually does unlock at midnight. _________________
