Jackie Brown (1997) - I've heard people (mostly here, I think?) say this is Tarantino's best film because, basically, it's the one time he's put his craft in the service of telling a story rather than a post-ironic pastiche of a story. This is true, but the fact of the matter is Quentin Tarantino trying to tell a real story just isn't that interesting - moreover, it robs Tarantino of almost everything distinctive and (ostensibly) appealing about his aesthetic. It's not as fun as Pulp Fiction, not as earnest or campy as the 70s genre flicks it homages (Shaft is an eternal winner in my book), and not as tense and focused as other neo-noir crime capers. It's... kinda just another genre picture. Well-made, but not particularly outstanding unless you're one to gobble up every meticulous inch of Tarantino. Ah man, Jackie Brown is so good. Best Tarantino movie by miles and probably the last time De Niro played an actual character and not 'De Niro'.
Just rewatched John Milius' Conan the Barbarian, which is the best Conan the Barbarian movie. |

| Tried to watch Stardust not long after it came out and was bored shitless so i turned it off. Willing to give it another go, though. I'm happy to be wrong 'cause man, De Niro was so good when he was good. |

It's not a great movie, but it's definitely an unconventional role for De Niro (for better or for worse) _________________ The text will not live forever. The cup are small |

Treated myself to a hyperviolent late-80s schlock double feature:
Predator (1987) - shrug's reverence for this movie a few posts up convinced me to finally watch it (I'd gotten it on Blu-Ray for cheap a couple months ago). It was pretty "dece". It's no Die Hard, but the scene where Ahnold dons mud camouflage and utters a primal warcry as he prepares to face the Predator with crude traps and hunting implements is transcendant, and probably makes John Milius (and shrug) shed a single manly testosterone-saturated tear every time he sees it. I also liked how after the Predator shows up every plot thread in the movie not directly and immediately related to Not Dying Right This Instant gets thrown out the window forever. I kind of love it when movies do that.
Hellraiser (1987) - The movie itself isn't hugely memorable apart from being particularly gruesome for a commercial release of its time, but the demon designs are very cool, up there with Jacob's Ladder, and almost certainly inspired the God Hand in Berserk. I wouldn't be surprised if Kazuma Kaneko's seen this movie more than once, either. _________________ Just another savage day on Planet Earth. |

Also in lieu of special features the Predator disc contained a trailer for the movie Commando. The scene with Arnold swinging from a giant balloon animal (??) gave me hiccups, but I have to ask: is this some kind of prequel/sequel to Predator? Because he appears to be the exact same character, right down to the outfit. _________________ Just another savage day on Planet Earth. |

Conan is the best fantasy movie.
Watching it while burning incense really enhances the experience. The cool thing about Conan is that unlike a lot of other fantasy movies, it is not magical, but instead mystical. You can feel it infused in every single thing in the movie _________________

Finally saw John Wick on HBO. I've watched it twice since this morning. Really satisfying action movie/revenge tale. I hear they're turning it into a franchise now or something so that should be a thing maybe. Don't know how well the character of John Wick will do in a movie that isn't a revenge fantasy because I can't see them doing that angle again for the sequel (at least not the first sequel).
Watching Keanu Reeves stylishly kill lots of people should still be entertaining in itself though. _________________

Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley's Island of Doctor Moreau was a gripping watch. I loved Stanley's work as a kid and it would go on to influence my cinematography back when. In fact, there are a few parallels between his career and mine (i shot my first feature at 21 and had essentially retired before i hit 29). Watching this young, talented eccentric get chewed up by studio politics was equal parts fascinating and horrifying. A cautionary example for indie filmmakers who want to hit the big leagues, and a great companion piece to Hearts of Darkness.

OK yeah but how do you feel about his outfits?
Do you think it's weird that he seems to wear the same pirate shirt in both this and JODOROWSKY'S DUNE or does it make you feel all warm inside like me?
How many spells do you think he has dwelling in that amulet?? _________________

Love his gear. If i'd had the nuts and the money i would have totally rocked that shit when i was young.
And hell yeah i would watch that show if it existed.
I should take this opportunity to express my bitter disappointment over Stanley's Mother of Toads short. His visual style is still unerring but the story was rock-stupid and felt like it was written by an untalented 13 year old horror buff doing fanfic.
Also, shrug, do you like classic Fields of the Nephilim y/n?
Also also: you know RS has a wicked blade collection. |

Afraid I'm not really familiar with Fields of the Nephilim :(
...
I doubt The Cruiser and Co. specifically set out to show Jurassic World how to do high heel gags right in the Year of Our Lord 2015 but that's what they do with MI5.
They perfectly mirror a beat in JW but it works and is a nice character moment and not stupid. _________________

Trainwreck is another decent Judd Apatow Comedy Production.
I long for the day his name will be attached to a movie as joyfully self-indulgent as Step Brothers, which took all the best parts of Apatow and director Adam McKay's films - the heavily improvised dialogue and the weird peripheral characters and digressions - and made a whole movie out of them.
Also on the subject of Judd Apatow, this _________________ Just another savage day on Planet Earth. |

Ah, sorry shrug. Reason i asked was that Richard Stanley directed two of their early videos before he did Hardware.
They're essentially a goth rock band, but with a Leone western twist (their album Dawnrazor kicks off with a cover of Morricone's "Harmonica Man" theme from Once Upon A Time In The West). RS back in the late eighties dressed like a sixth member of the band. Those videos are up on the yootoobs, fyi. |

Has anyone ever written A Smart Thing about how spy movies these days are almost always about some kind of mole or threat to dismantle the spy agency itself? It seems like no one ever saves the world anymore, they just save their own asses. I re-watched the first Mission: Impossible movie the other night and it's sort of interesting to see how that and Goldeneye really set the tone for the next couple decades of movies. How many times has the list of field agents' real names been used as a MacGuffin? It's crazy. _________________ The text will not live forever. The cup are small |

Well the spy genre can't really operate from the modern historical perspective so they have to rely on such absurd plots out of necessity. _________________

Maybe it's a sort of tacit acknowledgement that that the problems of the world are too complicated for some asshole whose car shoots oil slicks to solve by fucking a model.
You could maybe argue that this is an effect of a more nuanced understanding of the relationship between war and globalism, or something?
I dunno. I don't think I've actually seen any modern spy movies, and the only older spy movies I've seen were a handful of James Bonds. So I don't really know what I'm talking about.
Oh man, it would be really cool to see some kind of, like, George RR Martin take on spies in which a relatively simple information gathering mission ends up having repercussions that spin out of control and result in handfuls of individuals trying to mold world events by cutting off the Mickey-hydra-broom problems they accidentally created. Cross that with the bloated American spy network that may not even be internally fully documented, and you the opportunity for an Hirou Onoda "We'r still focusing on Afghan counterintelligence" situation.
Instead of using the Rose War and Scottish slaughters as his source material, he could just use the Curve Ball debacle. _________________ "Godzilla could be anyone."
