Okay here's some random songs I wrote for videogames that never got made:
Overgrown City -- part of the sadly aborted "Blue Arizona" project :(. I found this awesome flute sample on a university website, and recorded live piano and bass for the rest of the instrument tracks. the drum beats are actually sampled from Mother for the NES.
Buttercup Festival -- I made this for a supposed-to-be-made flash adventure game based on the awesome (now defunct) webcomic buttercup festival. I tried to pattern it after the tone of the comic -- bouncy and lighthearted with a brief diversion into melancholy. that weird ethereal sounding sample came from this old radioshack keyboard I found at a pawn shop for $20. the bassline is played on a vintage moog rogue. the drum samples come from a variety of places, including the same mother samples, in addition to the snare drum from the intro of "el scorcho" by weezer, the kick drum from some brainiac song (nothing ever changes, I think). I have no idea where I got that weird distorted cymbal. Listen to this one with headphones!
Nightland Town -- this was for a still-pending project that I don't want to say anything about. not sure if I'll use this since I think I'll be going with something more chiptuney. still it was a fun concept sketch. the concept behind the song was that it's about an abandoned and ancient town which has decayed into ruin -- some pieces are well preserved but much of it is just sprawling wilderness. I tried to capture that contrast by breaking up traditional folk-style melodies and chord changes with more abstract passages. I basically wrote a town song and then took it apart, and inserted passages which captured the mood of a peaceful but wistful landscape. I think it came together pretty well. This is maybe the one composition that I'm most proud of in recent years. _________________

Joe that song was pretty rad man. It's kind of beyond my ability to analyze it, though. I liked that synth part, and the drum sound, and just how uh... weird the whole thing sounds. _________________

If memory serves, everything but the synth line is a heavily effected 808-alike VST thinger. |

joe that's pretty nice. It sounds like you are leaning pretty hard on a slider that shifts things up and down an octave which is an endeavor i can totally get behind
toups this is my favorite stuff of yours that you've posted so far! I need to get home and listen to these with some headphones.
Right now I am in the hobby of making music. I still have yet to sit down and make an effort to learn some music theory, unfortunately. And the hobby grew out of a love of using the tools (which is totally the wrong way to go about it, as concept should always come first :( ). I like to switch between dance/drum n bassy stuff and ambient/noise stuff.

I don't keep track of my samples very well. I keep a pretty large library of found sounds and drum samples, and I dig into my iTunes collection a lot.I have a couple of softsynths and a vl-tone, too, which I feed into my demo version of Ableton Live. _________________ ( ( |

I was an apprentice to this guy who's a friend of the family. Yeah, some of the things I did with him (that he designed) ended up for sale in shows at the Smithsonian. I feel pretty good about that.
Pieces I like a lot that I got to work on/ make...
Hot Rod Coffeetable
Bronze Asparagus Mirror
Wild Lookin Love Seat
There's lots of other things too that are not in the gallery. We did the interior design of our local independent movie theatre Baxter Avenue Theatre where we also did the ticket and snack counters.
AND MORE.
Ok. _________________

Smartblue that is an excellent mirror, fully exploiting my weaknesses for both the bronze and the wood.

This is true. I do what you said.
Mainly just accessories, though. Nothing large scale. Yet, anyway.
I just finished a couple of belts.

I love the things I got to touch and shape. It's too bad I'll not be able to afford any of these things any time soon. That mirror sold for $19,000. The glass was custom molded and imported and the inner lining is guilded with gold. There was another mirror I really liked that looked like it had planatary rings around it.
I learned just about everything you could learn in a shop class in about six weeks working with him. I miss the chili dogs we'd get from the ice cream shop down the street. I also miss going to the jam sessions he'd have monthly on those sweet amazing guitars he made. Ted was a trained classical pianast and it shows in the complexity of his playing on the guitar. Oh man, I can still hear those bluegrass pickers going.
It was high school, then work at the shop. Good times, good times. I eventually put the job down once I had been cast in some musical performances at the theatre. Those, too, were good times and are tales for another thread.
We should move this thread to the General Forum. _________________

toups those songs are great. really like the first and second ones you posted. i agree with sawtooth: i think these are some of the best ones you've put up.
edit -- sawtooth just listened to the songs you posted, the last three songs are impressive. good stuff man. i really liked the distortion you used in the second song. the last two are just downright groovy.
joe, i dug the song you posted too. you should definitely get back into writing songs if you enjoy it. i suppose the only thing that i thought sounded off was the dry (too) clean drum samples. i kinda like my drums to be muddier/more organic, so. or moog'd (i don't know much about moogs, i'm going on the way the bassline in toups' second song sounded like). or shit, beatboxed through a layer of distortion! good song man.
i will maybe post something. |

Thanks a lot! I do enjoy making music, but I find myself constantly frustrated by the process. It feels like I'm beating my head against the wall just to make a damn drum beat half the time. |

| I do want to incorporate vocal elements into some things at some point. However, I lack a decent microphone and the proper environment for recording the uh, "vocals" I have in mind. Neighbors might not dig it. |

Smartblue that furniture is really nice-looking (I especially enjoy the love seat).
Joe! download the Ableton Live demo. It's how the music sequencer in my head always looked and felt really intuitive to start using. _________________ ( ( |

I'd like to see the controls and such for this rig. It looks really nicely done, in the vein of the Incredibles. _________________

I haven't bothered with having any controls for the rig. I'm probably just going to pose the skeleton by hand and maybe use morph targets for the face. The module is all about the modelling really. I designed him mostly with the DC animated shows in mind with a little extra detail.
Pretty happy with how it turned out and it was much easier to make than I expected. Plus zBrush has finally clicked with me and it's fun as hell. |

Thanks! But the further I go back through my limited output the more terrifying and generally bad said output becomes.
Also I've given away most everything I've made that is 'good,' frequently failing to photograph it before it went.
...
I am enjoying this review of the works of everyone's hands.

Have you seen that movie with Tommy Lee Jones and Benicio Del Toro? Del Toro made a pretty manly knife in that one. Sadly, it wasn't enough to finish Tommy off. _________________ Get Wild and Tough! |

I remember watching that movie going "YEAH MAKING THEIR WEAPONS TO KILL EACH OTHER LIKE MEN YEAH!!!" but then I thought about the time frame involved and realized it was kind of stupid and cried. :(
..also Benicio would have totally had to find some natural abrasives to sharpen up his knife no matter how close he forged to the edge and the leaf spring he used would probably shatter when he stuck it in water to harden it.
I think I have a problem. :( _________________
