i've been following this one since you started and i want to say, besides all the valid complaints you bring up, it's really annoying whenever that little symbol pops up at the bottom to tell you you got a head shot. is that supposed to be for some achievement or something

I don't know! Probably!

Probably!

I can't get any achievements though, for... various reasons.

One of my favorite Let's Plays I think it's Diabeetus' Battletoads Let's Play, which apparently got removed from Youtube or something.

It's really funny, but when it gets close to the end, it sorta becomes bitching about everything, which I dislike. Most of the Let's Play though is really enjoyable and original for a Let's Play.

If only I could find it. The uploader made the video private all of a sudden, and I can't find it anywhere else, shit.

Medal of Honor 2010 is complete! Turns out it is a vaguely mediocre game that gets shittier as it goes on. Awesome.

I'm leaning pretty heavily towards doing Medieval 2 Total War next except I fear that literally no one would watch it. I'd do either Scotland or Venice. Any opinions?

The other option is to jump into the next Tomb Raider, which is Anniversary. But I dunno if I'm really prepared for that at the moment.

My playthrough of You Have to Win the Game

The CRT-vision/glare is a bit gimmicky but I enjoyed it nonetheless, so I 100%ed it.

Let's Play Tomb Raider Anniversary

It's... really pretty good so far? Old Tomb Raider levels (sort of) + smooth Legend controls is a pretty good combo. Checkpoint system sucks all the tension out of it but at least it's a lot more beautiful and... quieter.

Daggerfallen, the Let's Play Daggerfall saga

Classier than my last LP in that the Chapter-naming scheme and descriptive flavor text are clever.

Less classy in that I voice the LP's as opposed to all subtitles, so I end up saying dumb shit a lot.

I had no idea that Daggerfall was so huge. Is it the biggest overworld in a game? Also, what places are randomly generated? Is it just the dungeons (excepting the first)? Because the towns are laid out so weirdly.

well, it's slightly more complicated than that. Major cities (capitals) and dungeons related to the Main Quest are hand-designed, although there may have been some randomization before they were tweaked. The game has hundreds and hundreds of "unimportant" towns, dungeons and miscellaneous locations (witch covens/shrines/farms, mostly), and they were designed randomly - however, that randomization was something that happened before they were fixed at a location in the game. Everyone has the same Daggerfall world, but the sheer size of it is far larger than anyone short of a ulillillia-style savant would ever be able to explore even a quarter of.

Now, what you actually find in a dungeon is based on why you're there - while the game's dozen of "random" quests are formed from set scripts, there are variables randomized within them that determine where you're going, what you're doing when you get there, etcetra. That's different from instance to instance.

You can see some of the formations that go into randomization in Daggerfall here:
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Daggerfall:Dungeons
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Daggerfall:Dungeons#Assembling_of_Dungeons
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Category:Daggerfall-Map_Images <--- shows both dungeon and town "blocks"

And finally:
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Daggerfall:Cities#Overall_dimension_of_the_Iliac_Bay

As far as I'm aware, it's several magnitudes larger than any other game with a fixed overworld, but there might exist games where a procedurally-expanding overworld could (with sufficient time, effort and resources) grow larger.

I was recently reading about Battlespire. I had no idea the dialogue in that game could be so ridiculous.

Well, I'm a pretty natural public speaker when speaking is all I'm doing, but since I'm playing the game at the same time it's too much for my peabrain to handle and I pause a LOT mid-sentence. So I'm not sure whether or not it'll be your thing :( It's funnier when you realize that fact though, and besides I've recorded nine sections already so I guess I'm committed.

Re: size, DAIS nailed it. I believe it was the largest for awhile. I don't know precisely when another game overtook it if there was one before Minecraft, but where Daggerfall is about the size of Great Britain, Minecraft can reach a maximum theoretical size of 9,258,235 x Earth's surface area (68,719,476,736 meters, width and length, beyond which point 32-bit math fails).

Thanks a whole bunch for doing this. I've tried to play Daggerfall many times, but always got frustrated/bored/mauled by bears. Voiceover is the soul of Let's Play!, though. Even when the guy sounds like Garrett and makes shitty jokes the whole time. Seems weirdly sterile without it.

"And I wake up in another room — they must have dragged me."

Enjoying this, especially since I haven't spent more than 30 minutes playing Daggerfall myself. It looks surprisingly cool at times, like that moment where you were walking through this kind of barren wilderness at night, and it looked about as creepy as finding yourself on a grey moon under a starless sky. That and the textures in some places, like the alchemy shop with the potions on shelves. And the old MIDI music. And Doom sound effects.

I was saying to Tulpa last night I wish I had played more western RPGs as a kid instead of so many jRPGs, so yeah, this is pretty interesting to me. Maybe I should watch a good Morrowind LP, too, since it seems I'm doomed to never even leave the first town in that one no matter how many times I try to start a new game...

If you do that, please do actually just talk your way through it. I assume this is a lot less time-consuming than editing captions into the video, anyway. And I mean, even if you got drunk and recorded yourself playing Morrowind I'm sure that would be a hell of a lot more interesting/entertaining than 99% of LPs with weirdo nerds babbling their way through whatever game on youtube. Plus it's nice to be able to tab out and treat it halfway like a podcast if I don't feel like just sitting and watching everything you do in a long RPG.

I'm enjoying a combination of both with the Daggerfall LP, using captions to glaringly point out my talking mistakes

Also Vito that looked like a lot of fun! Now I want to play it.

I tried describing this earlier in the thread, but I feel like live commentary is more appropriate with slower, more contemplative type games. Twitch action games work a lot better with subs, in my opinion, for the following reasons:

1. They're hard. It requires a lot of focus to play an action game and it takes a very special person to concentrate on actually playing the game and speaking English instead of half-sentences and a lot of "uhhhhhhhhh"s. There's no possible way I could have done Hard Reset on Insane if I was trying to talk the whole time.

2. They're simple. There's just less to say that's relevant to the game, because the game's less about consciously weighing options and more about execution. A few subs sprinkled here and there suffices to tell what's going on with game strategy. Commentary would have to be filled with a bunch of bullshit, which I'm pretty confident I'm good at but the more dead time the higher the chance of descending into bad jokes and lame attempts at keeping up interest. "So did you guys see that Orioles game...?"

On the other hand, "deeper," slower RPG-ish games have a lot more that the player is constantly thinking about. I'm doing this instead of this, I'm choosing this instead of that, I'm going to this place now for the following reasons, etc. So if I do Morrowind I'll definitely do it with commentary, same as my Deus Ex 3 LP for example. Tomb Raider obviously falls somewhere in the middle of this spectrum, but I decided to go with subs because 1. it preserves the game's hushed atmosphere of invading ancient spaces and 2. I anticipated that I'd have to do a lot of exploring, which means a lot of editing stuff out, which would mean a lot of awkward cutting myself off as I removed chunks of video.

ALL THAT BEING SAID, I'll do more voice work in the future. It sure is a lot easier, and if you guys like it what the hell!
