I might watch this because of the subs, since LPs are often insufferable. There are (supposedly) some good ones out there where the person can really give some insight and additional info about a game, but often I wish that the person playing would shut up instead of uttering comments like "loading …" and "go there, [character-name]".
Thus I welcome a chance where a game can speak for itself. _________________

whether or not a voiced LP is "insufferable" depends on the game, and the voice of the person, i think. _________________

Annotated let's plays are the only kind I can watch. No offense to any video game player, your voices are often painful to hear. Stop trying so damn hard, we are nerds, you don't have to go out your way to prove it every single chance you get. Keep the memes and inside jokes to chan and IRC, make your comments relevant. Don't give away the plot until the viewer has seen it, you don't need to give us any exposition. _________________ Klima - Klima

oh man sleazy I've been looking for that last one actually, thanks!
cuba I'm gonna watch this Deus Ex LP 'specially since I prolly won't actually play the game for awhile. Also Hard Reset has always been a game I keep hearing about but don't really know what it is so I'm also pretty interested in that.
here's my only LP:
http://www.youtube.com/user/Sollah#g/c/78FB573BB767C3D7
i've been meaning to LP some other games (another Batman game, killer7 with .gifs) but given what I have in mind it's so much work. D: _________________

I think doing lets plays might actually make me play more games - generally when i have gaming time it is playing the most obscure roms I can - it is especially frustrating when something rules and there is no info on it anywhere. What are good screen recording progs? i've tried camtasia once and my god was that horrible. _________________

i've wanted to do an LP of EarthBound for ages, so i could show all my friends why i like it so much without making them play through an old-ass RPG. because, understandably, not everyone is a dork like me and has time to do that shit
though lately i haven't had time to do that shit either, lol :(
so yeah i second field balm's question. _________________

I've used FRAPs 3.0.3 quite a bit. I'm certain there's prolly a more updated version out there now, though. It can't record everything, but it's pretty good at what it does. all the videos it makes are uncompressed though, so make sure you have a lot of harddrive space.
there are quite a few emulators that let you record movies. I'm not really experienced in that though. I'm certain someone else here can fill you in on which emulators do and don't. _________________

Look up MSI Afterburner as an alternative to Fraps. The latest beta has video+audio recording with similar options to Fraps, except it outputs one huge file instead of having to piece together a bunch of files. Also consider Xfire, whose .ini can be modified to support a bunch of extra programs and games and also has screenshot+video+streaming (to Livestream, iirc) built in. Funnily enough, it happens to have built-in video support for Snes9x. Otherwise, you should be able to Fraps it if it supports a D3D/OGL render.
MameUI and Kega Fusion support capping straight to video, off the top of my head.
You could also use something like Xsplit, but Xsplit is a fatty program and wants to eat all your CPU cycles and you'd need a fairly beefy system to do even 480p recording, since it;s doing screen capture and H.264 encoding on the fly. It can output files and not just to streaming sites, though.
The question's got me interested and now I wanna see if I can get VHScreenCap and Virtual Dub to play nice together. And apparently my laptop has a built-in microphone. _________________

http://tasvideos.org/EncodingGuide/VideoDumping.html lists a fair amount of emulators that dump to video, although they are generally those which are optimal for TAS videos (and thus may lack some nice features you might want). You may also run into the occasional odd emulator-specific glitch - for example, there are a rare few GBC games that VBA-RR doesn't render correctly, so you might prefer VBA-M (which might then give you problems with the sound in some GBA games).
There's also some that aren't listed there (like MESS, which you may prefer for Neo Geo Pocket Color emulation).
Most video stuff is way beyond me, though. I'm avoiding dealing with it by choosing not to upload anything until Youtube has 60 FPS. |

| If you have a recent-ish AMD video card the driver package includes a drag & drop transcoding tool that can convert your giant raw videos to convenient h.264 files in no time flat using the magic of GPGPU computing. I assume there's a similar thing for nVidia users too? I'm sorry if I'm stating the obvious but somethingawful's Let's Play tech support thread didn't mention this last time I stopped by, choosing instead to delve into the exciting world of half-documented 1998 shareware and wonky Windows GNU ports. |

Afaik, those of us running Nvidia space heaters have no such thing, but I imagine there's probably a CUDA plug-in for something somewhere (looking at Nvidia's site, it's all commercial software though :( ).
Even then, if you have a speedy dual-core or a multi-core CPU, shit's still pretty fast nowadays. Unless you're throwing a bunch of filter on or doing a long, long video.
Recommending that you have Virtual Dub. It's pretty powerful and fantastic for simple editing or compression. And free. _________________

I know that this is a bit overkill, but using mplayer/mencoder is as easy as using an advanced emulator with 100+ settings to fine-tune things, so if one doesn't have access to these (quite awesome) GPGPU-tools, there's still a good (and legal) solution out there that doesn't need to be rapidshared.
Or just go the Virtual Dub-route, excellent tool as well. _________________

I use Vegas for editing. It's extremely powerful, a piece of "professional" software like Photoshop that you can sort of figure out how to use the 8% of that you need, but know you can always grow that percentage if necessary.

720p encoding for me takes slightly more than a 1:1 ratio, so a 15-minute video takes somewhere between 16-20 minutes to render. Not bad, especially since I have a multicore beast and can do other light tasks (internet, youtube, even watch full video) simultaneously. _________________ Let's Play, starring me. |

Let's Play Hard Reset is complete.
I consistently get a few views every vid, so I know there are a few people who actually watch em, and I bet they're from here. What would you guys be interested in seeing next? My ideas so far are a blind LP of the new Medal of Honor game, which would be in order for me to shit on it; Witcher 2, which is a really cool game that didn't really get enough exposure, but it would be really long and RPG-y (a lot like the DX3 LP); and Medieval 2 Total War, which would also be long but a big change of pace. Any preferences?
Oh also! How did you like the subs in the Hard Reset LP? All the stuff I'm thinking about doing going forward will have to be audio commentaries, but I like subs and want to get back to them sometime. _________________ Let's Play, starring me. |

I honestly don't mind hearing a persons thoughts on a game as they play it but I could see it not being someone elses cup of tea. If there is any easy way to add an option for subtitles and/or audio commentary, I'd certainly be happy. I've never been big on Lets Plays but I do enjoy watching Live Plays (is that a proper term?) because then you can chat with the person playing and try and influence how they play if they're receptive enough. _________________

The cutscenes that play while Hard Reset loads each level really are pointless and terrible. I like the game a lot otherwise.
The subs are good! I don't think audio commentary has to be as bad as it so often is. It's only terrible when the player is a mumbling idiot. You'd do fine with it. _________________

My brother says he's a huge fan, enjoys the bernie mac references etc, he wants you to do dark souls. But I figure that's probably a whole extra hassle of equipment and effort to record, being a console game and all. _________________

Yeah console is a thing I'm not equipped to do, but all it takes is a couple hundred bucks and a PVR. Couple hundred bucks is a lot, though. I could try stealing Flylighter's but like, that's his. And I'd have to go aaaaaalllll the way to Scaggsville. _________________ Let's Play, starring me. |

Thanks for the vote of confidence. Actually my DX3 LP is all live commentary, except for NO FATE, so it's there if you want to check out what it's like.

There's definitely no easy way to do this. All the subtitles are handwritten and placed by me in Vegas, to do them underneath a running audio commentary would be a real chore. Also their aesthetic uses are different - audio commentaries, by their nature, are chatty and tend to be sillier in the sense that you end up joking around a lot to fill space. Subtitles leave you with much less text and are inherently unobtrusive. In my experience, they're better for linear/directed games that don't need much explication. The reason I consider audio "necessary" for my potential ideas is that audio is more appropriate to more wide-ranging, option-filled genres like strategy or RPG, since at any given moment you're sifting through a lot more data and it's much more natural to present that sifting process as a constant patter. Also they take less concentration - people who can talk like normal human beings while successfully playing a focused and challenging action experience are pretty rare (I am not one of them). _________________ Let's Play, starring me. |

Let's Play Tomb Raider: Legend is complete.
Actually, looking at the thread, I realize I never even posted about it here after I started. Oops!
I spend a lot of time talking about how the game is an attempt to reconcile the earlier, exploratory style of game with the modern, cinematic, setpiece style. The main LP is done with subs, but if you want to hear all my opinions (and see the best level), check out the Croft Manor vid, which is a kind of postmortem I did with audio commentary as I went through the Croft Manor bonus/training level, which, owing to its openness and lack of setpieces, stands as a model for what the game could have been, and what a Tomb Raider game should be.
I finally got Medal of Honor working so expect a stupidplay of that next! _________________ Let's Play, starring me. |

Not that it's a Let's Play, but you may be interested in this video of SW:TOR, in which I do exactly that to scripted enemies and events (flying on my speeder through groups of enemies who are still running to their combat spots). _________________ I'm on Steam! ----- I'm on Youtube!
