Doom has a few, E1M2 chainsaw room and I can remember stumbling into a couple around through E4. |

Yeah, in the game's defense they aren't necessary to completing the game, so I guess it works out. |
I'm pretty sure that one of the later levels in Doom 2 has an essential "shoot me" door. Either that or a false wall?
vision? |

| Doom2 is in some ways the SMB2j to the original Doom's SMB (yes I will continue to use that comparison), in that many of the levels rely on you knowing the game mechanics intimately. Remember that one level with those impossibly narrow bridges leading everywhere? |
That'd be The Chasm, right?
The Doom 2/SMB2j comparison is pretty spot on.
edit: amazingly spot on, even. goddamnit toups play Doom with us :(

Doom.

I was actually going to say Quake, because well. SMB has a lot of stuff you can do in it: hitting blocks, jumping, running, running+jumping, kicking koopa shells, shooting fireballs, picking up stars/mushrooms/etc, climbing vines -and this seems like a much more diverse range of things than Doom ever asks you to do. Quake has a little more, what with true 3-D aiming and jumping and such added in, and the ability to discover advanced maneuvers like rocket jumps. And the first few areas of the game teach you how to do most of these things through their design. |
The problem there is that none of Quake's maps put any of that to effective use. |

| Actually rocket jumping orginated in DooM, and one of the levels was supposed to be completed using it. |
Kind of, you could use the rocket jump to get to the secret exit in E3M6.
Arch-vile jumping is closer to the quake rocket jump though :( |
