Man, I was really hoping they'd release Portal for Xbox 360 without Half-life 2 and stuff with it (so it would be cheaper), but now I really feel like I should play it.
Guerilla marketing, itt? No, I kid.
Good comparison to SMB, especially in terms of how HL2 teaches its players how to play it. Part of me wants to say that there has to be an FPS that handled things as well in that department (just because the genre has been around for long enough) before HL2 but nothing is jumping out in my mind.

Doom.

I was actually going to say Quake, because well. SMB has a lot of stuff you can do in it: hitting blocks, jumping, running, running+jumping, kicking koopa shells, shooting fireballs, picking up stars/mushrooms/etc, climbing vines -and this seems like a much more diverse range of things than Doom ever asks you to do. Quake has a little more, what with true 3-D aiming and jumping and such added in, and the ability to discover advanced maneuvers like rocket jumps. And the first few areas of the game teach you how to do most of these things through their design. |
