Doom.

Also, that was an amazing read.

Doom.

You know, I was thinking about that, and while it sort of has a gentle progression of game ideas it doesn't quite follow that SMB Miyamoto plan, I don't think. I'm having trouble putting my finger on why.

The mechanics of Doom are much more simple. By the end of the first level you understand everything about the game that you need to know.

The only flaw in the way Doom presents itself is that it never teaches you about "shoot me" switches, though... actually, now that I think about it, those didn't exist until Doom II. Did they?

Doom has a few, E1M2 chainsaw room and I can remember stumbling into a couple around through E4.

Yeah, in the game's defense they aren't necessary to completing the game, so I guess it works out.

I'm pretty sure that one of the later levels in Doom 2 has an essential "shoot me" door. Either that or a false wall?

vision?

Yeah, Doom2 definitely did, and since it was the first Doom game I ever played I always got stuck at that part, until I started fiddling around with map editors and saw "Shootme" as a switch type and suddenly it clicked.

Doom2 is in some ways the SMB2j to the original Doom's SMB (yes I will continue to use that comparison), in that many of the levels rely on you knowing the game mechanics intimately. Remember that one level with those impossibly narrow bridges leading everywhere?

For the love of God I will kill a man if it will convince Id/Microsoft/Activision to put Doom ][ (proper spelling) on XBLA.

Bitch, this was pretty much the basis of a TGQ article I was working on.

WELL. GUESS I WON'T BOTHER NOW.

Write it, write it!
