If you have an HD 7 series Radeon, you may want to download the new beta Catalyst drivers:
http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/AMDCatalyst1211betadriver.aspx

I have a 7870. The release notes mention that they fixed the lower than expected GPU utilization issues plaguing the HD 7 cards. This looks to have improved performance/consistency in nearly all games. Dark Souls is running higher minimums for me and the Final Fantasy IV benchmark no longer shows HUGE dips every few seconds in its on screen performance graph. Fraps benching the FFIV benchmark also shows higher average framerates and higher minimum.

It also quotes pretty nice performance improvements in some newer games.

Awesome!

Final Fantasy IV is a benchmark for current graphics cards?

More importantly, did they break something (again), like video playback?

Anybody else thinking of checking out Wizardry Online? Yeah it's an MMO, but supposedly there is permadeath. The weird bleak fantasy look of it is appealing, too. The beta starts in a few days and I only just signed up, so we'll see how that goes.

I don't actually play the game. The benchmark though is pretty useful for performance testing/tweaking. It tracks load times and seems to equally depend on graphics card and CPU power. So, even slight tweaking of either shows small differences. Additionally, its pretty, and short enough that repeated viewings aren't annoying.

You and Squenix and its playerbase. Though, I applaud their efforts and the idea that they would go "yeah, this is awful" and start all over again.

To think, all those people who bough XIII on the PS3 will finally get to play the beta 2-3 years after the game "launched". Only, you know, without buying the game.

I'm so happy to see at the end of the North American trailer for Fire Emblem: Awakening that the typography for the title is keeping with the spirit of that found on the Japanese box.

Seconding this. It's got a decent sense of humour and apart from the bosses being a little bit tedious you'll enjoy your time with it.

2nd opinion: I enjoyed exactly zero parts of this game, and am very happy I spent no money on it.

y'all got that journalism

Kotaku wrote:
Another source recounts an anecdote from a different theater review. "The game was an unplayable disaster [in the review], but he got fixated on a static mesh of a non-interactive grey truck in the background. He gave the company a 20 minute lecture on the fact that he'd never buy a grey truck; he wanted it painted red." Accordingly, some SK employees sniggered behind their backs at Dyack: "We jokingly coined the phrase ‘paint the truck!' for other ridiculous, off-the-hip ‘executive orders' that sprang forth from Denis' mouth," says the same source. "Incidentally, I played the game after release... the truck is still grey."

It's a good informative article but it could've really used an editor to cut a third of it out.

Glad to know Silicon Knights is as bad as they seemed. Unfortunately, that kind of stupid power mongering leadership isn't that unusual in game development.

Half that Kotaku article was references to Metacritic scores.

Thought this was an interesting article about journalism and videogames, particularly as it relates to intimidation practices and extraordinarily poor pay. I'm still honestly surprised that access to information is guarded so heavily. Original source code and the like I can understanding wanting to protect, but refusing to advertise seems just plain stupid.

I... I can't tell who this is supposed to be advertising to at all

Is it for Japanese fanboys? Is it for American fanboys? Is it some bargain PR videomaking where they're trying to appeal to both for the lowest price?

I'm confused and also fascinated.

It honestly took me almost the entire clip to figure out what was going on, even with the D3 logo right at the start.

I feel like something amazing happened.
