one era ends, another begins. Fall TV shows are almost here!
And in the next six months, we'll see, or rather we will be able to see:
-Season 2 of Agents of SHIELD
-Agent Carter (when AOS takes a break in early 2015)
-Season 3 of Green Arrow
-Debut of The Flash (I will be legitimately amazed if they can do this show without it looking really silly)
-Debut of Constantine (no gratuitous swearing, smoking, drinking, blasphemy or disembowelment....but I guess NBC also has Hannibal)
-Gotham
-And also some stuff on Netflix I will forget to steal
I was actually making an axe topic about Gotham last night, after meaning to for a couple months (since I saw the first trailer). After posting the cast list, I thought it would be neat if we could think up villains who would fit the series better chronologically if they wanted to base it more closely on the comics/cartoons. Stuff like Solomon Grundy, the Court of Owls, Vandal Savage, etc......but the topic wasn't really going anywhere, and then I lost it. Oh well.
A new age of TV superheroics is about to dawn! Dawn-ish. Dawn some more. Dawn further. Dawner.
CSI: Cyber Crimes doesn't air until 2015 :(
They say it's a mid-season replacement for CSI, but I think they really just need time to mock-up all the fake MMOs. |

Patrick Warburton's first go as The Tick was awful.
That was probably mostly the writing's fault, though. _________________

You're the Worst is a really good, super dirty romantic comedy show. Stories about people boning who will obviously fall in love eventually can get tiring, but this one works because they don't waste a lot of time talking about how they're going to try really hard not to have a relationship. It feels authentic and the main characters are great.
It's weird that this is the second show in a row about British guys in LA (Hello Ladies came out last year), but it's not the worst trend in the world. |

| Upon watching the season premiere of The Simpsons, and based on my observance of the past couple of seasons (been out of the loop for about 9 of them), I've come to believe that long couch gags that are really just shorts done by guest animators might be the best thing the show has now, and maybe it should go fill circle and just be all shorts again, consisting of these "couch gags". |

rewatching veronica mars and i am both struck by how unusual it's treatment of race and class as things that exist (still) is for a tv show
and also all the specific cultural and technological ways that the 00s feel alien and different |

As much as I love Veronica Mars, the treatment of race and class in it made Crash look subtle and nuanced. But maybe that's still better than not addressing it at all? |

Veronica Mars takes place in a heightened UPN/WB world where drama is the law of the land and and teens always have sharp wisecracks ready to go but nothing is Crash lol
Speaking of unsubtle portrayals of race and class relations, I think that Black-ish seems like one of those shows that will probably be good like mid season two once it settles into its characters and voice. Like you can tell they think they have too much on their shoulders right now as the only Black network sitcom in years |

gotham is somewhat cartoonier/tim burtonier than i thought it was going to be
also it takes place in an unspecified time the same way that batman the animated series did except instead of all screens in black and white for no reason , it's crts and 4:3 tvs for no reason
like the 70s/80s cop show version of the thing
sure seems like either a straight gotham central or bruce wayne training to be batman show would be better though |

Turns out Sci-Fi's Defiance show is not somehow not god-awful, and in fact, pretty damn good. Season 2's a bit slow in the middle, but everything's consistently enjoyable and interesting.
Some of these characters are completely delightful too. _________________ tumblr

what I'm kind of worried about is where season 3 of Defiance will go now that the big "thing" has been handled (I guess). Maybe something new comes up in the MMO, or they pull the smaller plot threads tight together until they have a new focus
actually there are dozens of comments I could pass about this chunk of TV and the spring/summer season too, stuff I contemplated coming in to this topic to say
instead I am saying that the latest Law & Order SVU was about domestic abuse with retired athlete and the wife he was seen abusing on leaked surveillance video, and that leaked video was seen in the middle of one of the detectives scrolling through a site that was posting leaked celeb nudes from a big hack, and the site they were posted on was apparently called "Redchan" (although I swear the subtitles rendered it as "Redchant"). I think it was an RSS feed, tho, coz it was all in one big page like a tumblr or something.
Do you guys think The Flash will make it ten years
Do you think Sleepy Hollow will make it seven
Do you think Rebecca shot JR
Do you think Gotham will trick question nobody knows what Gotham will do it is off the rails and hurtling into space |

unfortunately it was a mediocre episode, and i usually really like chris rock.
on the positive, last weeks episode was the best of the season so far (faint praise i know) and featured one of the least embarrassing musical performance s ive seen on the show in a long time! apparently the writers also understand how to write a one-note skit that doesn't overstay its welcome, too, i wonder why they dont do it more often _________________ The text will not live forever. As a former fan of the comic book, i have to say Constantine is fairly watchable. Sure, the writing is mediocre and it has that terrible network tv act structure ("cliffhanger", then commercials). And yeah, save for Matt Ryan, the acting's not very good at all. But the series so far is still mostly true to the original stories (mining from the Jamie Delano years) and characters (although the less said about Chaz The (now American) Magic Cab Driver, the better). It's leagues better than the Keanu Reeves vehicle, at any rate. The cinematography and direction are quite decent overall. The makeup and gore fx are also respectable.
I'd say it's worth a look if you're into this sort of thing and keep your expectations low. |

as someone who hasn't read the comic but likes the premise, watching one episode of Constantine was enough to make me feel less guilty about being addicted to Sleepy Hollow. Maybe it gets less horrible after the pilot though? _________________ The text will not live forever. The cup are small |

i have kind of classically bad taste so yrmv, but it is a show about a handsome british man battling demons in america. a recent episode saw ichabod cranefighting an evil pied piper. if i had to sum up the show it would be "national treasure meets the x files" _________________ The text will not live forever. So far the second season has been a little more monster of the week, but they are still pushing the apocalypse superplot pretty hard. Sometimes it's a stretch-see said pied piper episode. _________________ The text will not live forever. The cup are small |

I watched a few episodes of this and kind of really hated it, it's an adaptation of pretty much the worst parts of Delano's run with some changes I can't stand. They completely dropped the political-satire angle of it, they made Papa Midnite into a clear-cut villain instead of a tenuous potential ally/rival with his own stuff going on, and they managed to dumb down the writing so much that when Constantine is dancing around, naked and covered in blood, in a circle of salt and chanting in latin Chas has to take the viewer surrogate aside and say "He is practicing a spell right now." _________________

Funnily enough, last night's episode featured Papa Midnight as much more of a rival/potential ally than a villain. It was also pretty bad.
Fun fact: the episode was directed by John Badham, who apparently has carved out a niche in genre tv lately according to his imdb page. |

I caught the first episode of season 2 after kinda dropping the show after the british-army-was-led-by-a-literal-demon reveal.
It's still hokey and charmingly over-the-top, but eh, seemed less fun than I remember it. It's like a hair's width away from being a shitty supernatural soap opera. _________________ tumblr

They're trying a little too hard for the Mulder/Scully thing. That is definitely making it less fun. Orlando Jones' absence also doesn't help, and the weird Whedonesque blonde treasure hunter is a really poor replacement. He's the Poochy of the series. _________________ The text will not live forever. The cup are small |

I haven't gotten that far, but that sounds awful.
I like their batshit detective work, sometimes. Like the way they deduced that the key Ben Franklin hit with lightning was actually the key to purgatory. When it's waaay out there, it's pretty fun. |

| Goddamn Flash (+Firestorm) vs Reverse Flash was a ton of fun. Also Dr. Christina Mcgee from the old Flash show playing a totally different Dr. Christina Mcgee! I'm really glad The Flash is finally one live action superhero show about a superhero fighting bad guys with his superpowers every week. Also the brothers from Prison Break being Captain Cold and Heat Wave is so good. |

| the second season of super dumb horror/conspiracy show Helix is here, and I gotta admit, the season opening surprised me in a number of ways and had some fun visual effects/mood setting. Here's hoping it turns out to be RE4 to the original's Code Veronica. |
