Its not much of an instruction manual - especially when compared to the older blizzard releases. It is still the largest manual for a physical copy of a game I have gotten this year. _________________ Man, I'm sorry. |

Well, if I had just went ahead and rolled my barbarian as hardcore, I would have made it to nightmare mode unscathed!
There were a few hairy spots in act IV that I almost died at though, actually had to use potions. _________________ I'm on Steam! ----- I'm on Youtube!

I really want to buy this game soon. If I'm enjoying co-op on normal with my barbarian this much, just helping people kill the skeleton king again and again, I think I'm gonna like the hell and inferno modes with friends a whole lot more than I had imagined...
Leaping across the screen and bashing out a seismic blast is just way too gratuitous. I like it.
Question: do you have to make a new character for new difficulties once they've been unlocked? _________________

No, the entire point of the higher difficulties is to take your game-completing character into new level-appropriate challenges. No one would have reached the level 60 cap and unlocked every ability upon finishing normal (I think low-to-mid 30s is standard); you just roll right through with that character to nightmare and then hell, continuing progression. By the end of hell, you can expect to have reached 60; at that point you either replay hell for loot until you feel ready or you just jump right into inferno, which is entirely designed for characters that have reached the level cap. The real Diablo 3 starts here. The character cap is 60, but monsters in inferno range from 61 to 65.
That's my understanding of game flow, at least. I also believe that, no matter how far you've progressed, if you create a new character you must start at normal. Notice the career progression map on this preview of player profiles; unless I'm mistaken, that straight line through the four difficulty levels applies to each individual character (and what's shown here is the player's furthest all-time progress).

Even so, I know that it has at least some art and lore, and we digital purchasers didn't even get a lousy pdf. The manual item in the start menu goes to the online guide web site. Bullshit. |

My wizard has more vitality than intelligence and had 2k more life than a monk and barb in the last group I was in
I can't tell if I'm doing this right, but I enjoy being able to run into groups and smash aoe buttons for damages and still have 2/3rds life (not even running the melee damage reduction passive. Damage reduction is for babies) _________________

Late last night I killed SK with a level 12-ish Barbarian whose battle tag was remote. Think the character name may have started with a P? That wasn't you, was it? (Yeah I know that's a weird thing to ask.) I was a female barbarian named...I forget. My tag is Tons followed by a buncha numbers.
I'm in the same boat as you. I was really unimpressed with the beta, mostly cuz performance in OSX was just awful. Terrible framerate and weird input lag. But the retail version feels much better. Except for all the fucking lag spikes. I would have caved and bought it already, despite it being a foolish purchase, despite all my disgust over the online-only thing, despite my fears of it gobbling up all my free time, but the server issues are keeping me from spending that money. Kinda glad they've bungled this launch.
Seeing the Witch Doctor can use a live snake as a shield almost broke me, though. That is the coolest. |

Killing magic enemies in nightmare mode and beyond is a satisfying, invigorating challenge. I met my first death against a fiery chains/illusionist pack of monsters! The 'fiery chains' mod just creates fire links between the enemies in the pack that deal damage to you when you get too close to them/walk through them, and the 'illusionist' mod gives each enemy a chance to spawn two clones whenever you hit them. So it was a gang beatdown spiderweb of fire, and I ctrl-alt-shitpantsed my way into my first death. And then my second! _________________ I'm on Steam! ----- I'm on Youtube!

Man I die pretty regularly in this game playing co-op, but rarely ever in single player. I don't pay much attention though.
Also, Demon Hunters seem built to die a lot, but that is OK because they are still cool.

Yeah, playing co-op has gotten me into a lot of trouble vis-a-vis death. What happens a lot of the time is that I explore the dungeon while people do inventory stuff. Then I get in over my head and try to retreat - which would be fine and normal in a single player game. But fleeing past a partner in menus you feel kind of bad and so turn around to buy as much time as possible for them to realize whats up. Splat. _________________ I can no longer shop happily. |

It's...Diablo. Prettier, with a nicer interface and cool additions, but nothing that screams THIS IS THE FUTURE!
Well except for some of the environmental stuff, that's pretty excellent at times. _________________ Steam/PSN/Xbawks: GcDiaz

Yeah, I skipped someone's dialogue earlier and immediately felt like an ass because I hadn't realized it would allow me to do that. I, uh, just assumed it would be like Dark Souls, where every player has to hit start for the boss intro cinema to be skipped. Oops. They didn't say anything, anyway.
I cleared the game on Normal earlier today. A guy I know from LJ/facebook hopped in while I was on my way to fight Diablo, and yeah, those last few areas flew by so quickly and they looked so cool, I was just glad to know I'd be able to return on my own and actually look at things instead of just blasting through the maelstrom. Co-op is so much fun, though! With 4 players it really starts to feel like you're wading through a battlefield. If anybody sees me on and you're at a level where you can jump in, please do. I'll be starting Nightmare in a moment, here... _________________

I don't really care to hear the dialogue or anything but I kind of felt like I should probably finish a play through on my own before jumping in other people's games just so I'll know what is going on at any time and where we're going and what we're doing. _________________

Ok, please correct me if I'm wrong, but this is how I feel about Diablo 3: if Starcraft was the original esports and Starcraft 2 was refined-to-perfection esports, then I'm scared Diablo II's must-play-for-loot makes Diablo III the kind of game where you forsake the world for more loot.
I wish it was *fun to play* like a beat'em up or something. Goddamnit. Is it at least mechanically fun to play? _________________ interdimensional |

Well, they are trying to discourage people running the same runs over and over again (the whole reason for botting in D2) with the whole Nephalem Valor buff system. It only kicks in at level 60, but whenever you kill a Champion or Rare pack, it adds a MF buff that remains in play unless if you leave the game or change your skills.
They've also tweaked how MF works so it doesn't become the whole "use MF to find more MF" deal that was in Diablo 2, as well.
Loot is still the driving force behind the game, but they're at least attempting to make it fun. _________________

One of the reasons I'm typically bad at competitive games of strategy and tactics is that I have a deleterious fondness for RNG-dependent tools. Case in point: I just entered Act IV of Normal (loooooool) on the strength of my exploding dogs build. The Azmodan fight went something like Grasp of the Dead > Corpse Spiders > Sacrifice > Sacrifice > Sacrifice > Sacrifice > Summon Zombie Dogs > Sacrifice > Sacrifice > Firebomb > collect loot. I'm sure this won't work in Nightmare (let alone higher difficulties), but god damn is it fun to play right now. _________________ JSNLV is frequently and intentionally wrong. |

Conceivably, you should be spending less time as you have more tools for getting loot aside from luck. You can always hit the AH (gold or real monies) and find what you need, trade since all the loot is handled server-side which means the game has an actual economy, or play in groups and share loot as the game generates loot for each client now (effectively making co-op games loot factories). They also changed the stats so that they all have a positive effect defensively, regardless of class, so while say a wizard or witch doctor may not go out of their way for strength, having some on your gear gives you an extra bit of mitigation, which means you aren't funneling everything into offense in terms of gearing and gemming. _________________

my experience with SC2 is that if you don't actually buy the game but manage to download and install it and enter your/a new bnet ID, the game pats you on the back for abortive piracy and tells you that you have the starter edition.
kind of classy, actually. |

Campaign done, normal.
Monks are fun, bad ass melee fighters with enough Ancient Chinese Magic for aoe and selfhealing. Really makes the game an exercise in clicking, probably good for rehab at Walter Reed. Nightmare is noticeably harder, with even the first zombies needing multiple hits from your Diablo-killing self. Gonna be a pain maneuvering on the battlefield to avoid ground effects, when any left click you do is bound to be over some enemy you didn't even mean to attack. _________________ Steam/PSN/Xbawks: GcDiaz

Just finished the Butcher on nightmare. Man, this game was fun on normal, but the true Diablo III starts with nightmare mode indeed.
Co-op cranks the insanity up even more, but it's just so good.
Still loving my barbarian most of all with a wizard alt for normal fun, but I am tempted to try a monk, soon, too...
I do want to try a bit more of the Torchlight II beta (I only peeked at it for a short while yesterday), but, uh, I'm kinda hooked on Diablo III now. _________________
