You're probably right, but it's knowledge that should be a part of someone's decision of which version to buy.

Protip: If playing Maverick Hunter X on one of these godforsaken portables, it's almost impossible to rapid-fire the X buster AND jump at the same time. The buttons on the thing are just too small and too close together. The solution is to play with the controller config, and stick the Shot function onto R (and dash onto L, or vice-versa.) I've switched triangle and circle to be weapon swap left and right. This config actually seems to work really well, and I no longer feel like my hands are too small for the thing. _________________

Oh, and by the way, for anyone whose PSV is locking up while in standby with a blue PS light on, this seems to be a hardware fault. I exchanged mine with Amazon, and the new one (at least so far!) does not have this issue. So. _________________

I disabled 3G and have no longer had the problem. Not sure what that means...

On that note, I want a Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection for the Vita.
Edit: Reports from gamefaqs say that while you can't buy it directly on the PSN store, if you download to PS3 and transfer to vita the PSP Sega Genesis Collection will work. Rad. _________________

You are the most pedantic person I've ever had the pleasure of not knowing.
As an aside, it looks like there are quite a few PSP games that can be transferred to Vita. No Outrun 2006, though :( _________________

I dunno man, I get pretty pedantic about paying for emulation packages that are inferior to what my PC could produce in 1998, too.

It's mostly about having portable versions of Phantasy Star 4 and (to a lesser extent) Fatal Labyrinth. There are very few Genesis games I care about and so long as I can play the games on an actual console, I'm usually okay with good-enough emulation. It doesn't have to be bleeding-edge-best or anything, just so long as it plays the game with reasonably good audio and no slowdown.
On that note, the Sega Genesis Collection is indeed transferable to the PSV from a PS3 (though you can't buy/download it on the Vita directly yet, unfortunately.) If you set it to "fit" instead of stretch, it actually ends up looking pretty good - there are black bars along the side of the screen so it maintains a 4:3 ratio, but you honestly don't notice them 'cuz the Vita's screen when dark is nearly the same color as the Vita itself. It'd probably look more horrible if the Vita was white. I imagine there's some smoothing action going on, and I've got the Vita's bilinear PSP filter enabled, but it looks Good Enough for the most part. As mentioned with regards to Maverick Hunter X I probably wouldn't want to play an action game on the thing, though. Vectorman would probably make my fingers hurt like hell. _________________

Except for those dumb enough to be on EU PSN accounts (hi!).
This is a neat game though and I'm glad more people will get in on it this way. Though my paper ran an incredibly dumb 1/5 review of it the other day in which the reviewer was downright indignant because he felt he'd been tricked into buying a toy-car game instead of a proper Motorstorm. Like, the giant R.C. in the title was completely lost on him (remember my paper and its videogame review staff are Foreign so this is actually a thing that could happen if said reviewer didn't give enough of a fuck to at least google these two mysterious letters taking center stage in the game's logo). |

Wow, I'll be saving $10 that I was completely ready to spend. Apparently the free Vita version doesn't unlock the PS3 version though. The earlier marketing idea was that buying one version = get both. Not that I'm complaining in the least, and if I enjoy the Vita game I may well pay money for the cross-playable PS3 one as well.
In other Vita news:
* Gamestop (where I preordered and bought my Vita) emailed me a $10 off coupon for select Vita games today as a "thanks for preordering", so if you bought from Gamestop check your email. Games were the Sony first party stuff: Hot Shots, Wipeout, Uncharted, Little Deviants, ModNation, and two games releasing this week (The Unit and MLB '12: The Show). They also sent a 10% off Vita accessories coupon. Both coupons good online and in-store. Yeah, people may have already gotten in on deals like buy 2 get 1 free, but it's a nice gesture. Despite not usually liking sports games (though maybe that isn't true with my Hot Shots addiction), I feel strangely compelled to try MLB'12... maybe $10 off is enough to convince me.
* Ridge Racer releases in the US in just over a week (March 13) for $29.99 retail or $24.99 on PSN. Comes with free day 1 DLC (3 tracks, 5 cars, 3 BGM songs). Included in the box in the retail version, and comes with the download version if purchased by April 30. Additional paid DLC will be available, including a package deal where you can buy all of the upcoming DLC at a discounted price. People complained about the game being fairly bare-bones, but I don't have any problem with the idea of releasing a more scaled down AND CHEAPER game, supplemented by DLC to equal the size (and price) of a "full sized" retail game. Seems pretty fair to me. Only potential issue is storage space on pricey proprietary storage media, but otherwise I'm fine with this kind of structure. |

Firenze, how do the armored core games play on the Vita? I think they are configurable, so they should work pretty well with the right stick. That was the only thing that kept me from buying them on psp. _________________ PSN: TaipeiGamer |

They are indeed configurable. Silent Line and Last Raven are fully configurable right off the bat, but for whatever reason AC3 requires finishing the short intro mission with default controls before getting access to the hangar menu with settings (at which point it has the same full configuration options). I'm still not sure of my exact preferred control setting, but it does work very well with left analog stick dedicated to movement and right stick to camera. Got kinda hooked on Last Raven when testing it out to confirm...

I've been particularly interested in Best Buy's stock since I had a bunch of credit/gift cards that I wanted to use for Vita stuff and it's right next to my work.
For my local store, they seem to have a somewhat limited game selection. For instance I don't think they ever got BlazBlue (which I went and got at Gamestop), Dynasty Warriors, Ninja Gaiden, or Shinobido. For systems, they sold out on 2/22 mid-day and have restocked systems at least once since the 22nd - they had 3G and Wifi when I stopped in yesterday evening. They have a very limited amount of memory cards - I think just the 8GB. I snagged one of the only 32GB cards a couple days before the main 2/22 launch. |

Here's about seven minutes of Queasy Game's quantization platformer Sound Shapes. Pixeljunk Eden and Everyday Shooter were actually significant reasons for why I originally bought a PS3, so I can't wait for this.
Also, does anyone know if Sumioni is any good? It's being brought out by XSeed, who I really like, for twenty bucks, but videos I've seen of it aren't very exciting. _________________ Hi |

Yeah same here. I mean, I get pretty much any new console/handheld near launch. But none of the DS/DSi, PSP, or 360/PS3/Wii had me as excited a couple weeks after I got it as the Vita does.
Not only are there plenty of good Vita games, but the hardware kinda gives my PSP games new life too. For some (like Armored Core as I mentioned above) it's the addition of a second configurable analog stick. On almost all of em it's that gorgeous screen. |

Yeah, that's not what I meant. Just that I remember both those games helped tip me into buying the system and are sort of the kind of thing I expect on Sony hardware at this point. See also Patapoon and Lumines (by yet another Q company) on the PSP.

Vita is looking like it's gonna have a pretty solid May-June stretch in North America if Gamestop's current dates are to be believed. In consecutive weeks we'll get Resistance (5/29), Metal Gear Solid HD Collection (6/5), and Gravity Rush (6/12). Then two weeks later is Little Big Planet (6/26), which looks like THE showcase for taking advantage of Vita hardware gadgetry. Not too shabby for higher profile games during a normally dead time.
It's notable that this is also a pretty dead time for all of the other systems. Also especially promising in that we're talking 3-4 months after a system launch, which is often a fairly weak time for new systems waiting for more games after having everyone rush to get stuff out at launch.

ya the controls aren't meant to be the level of mario but they should at least be a little more than absolute trash. The game should not be so completely lopsided in how fun it is to make levels compared to how fun it is to actually play them. |

My point was more that it's not even trying to be Mario. One of the conceits of the game is that everything in it is supposed to feel like a physical object, and the physics kind of follow from that. So Sackboy and everything else in the game have a certain heft that some people have interpreted as bad controls but actually works perfectly fine for the game and which, from my experience, non-gamers actually find pretty intuitive. I think it's just a matter of getting past preconceptions. I can't really refute whether or not you think it's fun, but it's one of my favorite games... I was gonna say this generation, but really it's just one of my favorite games, period. I love that it's this wonderful accessible creative platform. It just amazes me that it exists, and it doesn't get old for me. _________________ Hi |

that's great for your eek! I don't want the physics to be Mario or Super Meat Boy or even Banjo Kazooie. They were certainly designed a certain way. A way I hate and feels awkward and stop calling me a gamer >:|
It's neat to see someone that is actually the audience for LBP because everytime I played it I went, "Is this fun for anyone?"
It's really weird that if you have a mic connected the sackboy will match your voice and mouth movements to a certain extent. It's kind of creepy. _________________ My Hawt Blog Vita Games

I don't particularly care about Resistance but it's a notable high profile first party game, and it's nice to see that kind of stuff coming out at a healthier rate than, say the 3DS, which after launch was totally dismal. Even Nintendo themselves released nothing for 8 months post-launch except two N64 ports (Ocarina and Starfox). I care less about Resistance itself than I care that it appears Sony is doing a pretty good job of supporting this system and making it successful enough so other developers will find it to be a viable platform and make games I do have more interest in.
LBP Vita, on the other hand, I am kinda excited about because it looks like they're doing an awesome job of taking advantage of the system hardware. Multi-touch, rear touch screen, motion sensors, etc. I don't expect a precision physics platformer, but it honestly looks like you can put together legitimately fun little touchscreen games really well. Definitely interested in that. |

I take some perverse pleasure in knowing that I am the reason people in my neighborhood who check the Near app will see Art of Fighting and wonder what the fuck that is. I followed that up with some KoF '95. For some reason, Neo Geo Station and TG-16 games show up in Near, though normal PSP games don't.
People around me seem to dig Lumines, which is still holding the top popularity spot over the fast rising (and totally free) Motorstorm RC.

Um... game-changer regarding whether 3G is worth it? Phantasy Star Online 2 on Vita is supposedly going to be playable online with 3G, as well as WiFi. Apparently Sega has "special plans for 3G players in order to compensate for lower data transfer speeds".
This is the first peep of anything that makes me think the 3G hardware could be worthwhile. We'll see how it works though, and how much data usage (and monthly cost) that would require. And of course there are alternatives... I can just use wireless tethering to connect my Vita to my Android's 4G/3G connection if needed. |
