For now I'm enjoying Dynasty Warriors Next(hey, it's a guilty pleasure), but Dragon's Crown and Warrior's Lair(formerly called Ruin) are the games I bought the system for. I really want a first person dungeon rpg on this thing. Touch screen would rock for something like Dungeon Master.

Only two of those are ports. And yeah, there are lots of sequels. Just like on every system.

Vita isn't doing so bad for brand new IPs early in a system's life. Gravity Rush, Army Corps of Hell, Unit 13. Some other announced upcoming stuff like Sumioni, Dragon's Crown and Warrior's Lair. Not to mention some of the downloadable stuff like Escape Plan and Mutant Blobs Attack. That's... kinda better than most systems.

The games I mentioned were ports too.
Ports of some games I'd like to be able to play on a handheld would be neat.

Probably Hotshots and WipEout to start.

I've got a series of moneys coming in within the next few weeks, so I'll be able to build a pretty decent collection straight away. Unfortunately, i'll have to start off with just the 4GB or 8GB memory card, but them's the breaks! I've got a shit ton on PSN from my PSP so I wanted to get either 16 or 32, but since a memory card is really mandatory for the thing and i don't have that much money quite yet i'll have to start with one of the basic ones.

I've been pretty underwhelmed with Uncharted. I really love the PS3 series, but I just feel like Bend Studio didn't quite "get it" when it came to designing an Uncharted game, or maybe they "got it" too much - maybe that's the issue.

Anyway, I've put the game on eBay and regret the purchase. I've been playing Persona 3 and Ys Seven more than anything, but when I actually play VITA games I play Hot Shots, Wipeout, MvC, and Mutant Blobs.

Persona 3 and Ys Seven looks especially great on it. You can hold down the screen while playing a PSP title and you can turn on bilinear filtering and some color correction, but I really love how sharp and pixelated Persona 3 is, and the color correction dulls some of the color. I never played on an original PSP, but I would imagine my PSP 1001 would display it differently. Also, since I've only owned an original PSP, it's really great to play PSP games without the ghosting that plagued the first screen.

Wipeout is always pretty fun stuff.
I'd love to see a more thematically varied Wipeout, but I suppose 'techno-future' is part of the brand identity,

shame though

I really like this Wipeout, aside from the loading times. I like that they separated the offensive and defensive power-up pads, so when you're ahead you can aim for those. The different classes of ships are interesting, but from what I can tell, the fighters are just uncompetitive in races? When I unlocked the first fighter, I tried to use it in the next race and didn't get first in a few tries, went back to the speed ship and got first easily. Totally crushed with it in an online combat competition, though.

The online is cool too! You have an "online campaign" with objectives for each race, starting off you just have to shoot your weapons and finish the race to complete them, you don't even have to place. It's smartly integrated and easy to switch between online and offline.

Too bad I've just been playing golf, no time for racing. If anyone else wants to race though, it promises that it'll match you up with friends who are playing! So Smithee and anyone else who feels like it, add me on PSN, LandRoverAttack.

So, Sony is apparently doing a web presentation next week to reveal new Vita games.

Ronnoc wrote:

Food for thought... for people complaining that Vita doesn't have enough games that aren't sequels/franchises, compare Vita to 3DS in that regard.

After a year, 3DS has practically nothing of worth that isn't a sequel/franchise. Out of the retail 3DS games I've played, I count Steel Diver and that's it. And that's not a particularly great game. On the downloadable game front, 3DS does a little better with stuff like Pushmo and Sakura Samurai.

That being said, I don't particularly care as long as the games are good. New is nice, but fun is better. I'd much rather play Super Mario 3D Land than most new IP, and when I'm enjoying myself playing it I am not thinking "oh I wish this wasn't a FRANCHISE".

galaxyghost wrote:

This is pretty much exactly me. I also intend to play Army Corps of Hell but just haven't had the time yet.

Hot Shots is addictive as fuck and it kinda steals time from other games. Finally had a legitimately good online daily tournament result yesterday, got top 10% or so with a -9 score (birdie on all 9 holes), and came super close to two eagles. God bless Mega Cup.

Just got into Wipeout, and I fully agree that other than the inexcusably bad load times it's fun stuff.

Going back to the FRANCHISES discussion, I thing neggy's 1st page comment still holds up pretty well,

Quote:
modern stuff launches with all the games you just played and/or can play elsewhere appropriately up or downscaled for the new situation in which they find themselves; older, shittier launches, always had either some interesting curio from a company gambling that the lack of competition and general interest in a new system would afford them the opportunity to sell some units of something that would otherwise go gently into that good night, or else you might find something that genuinely seemed interested in some nook or feature of the new system that would make its appearance on other hardware unlikely or impossible

Comparing things like Wipeout to Super Mario; 3D Land seems to have more of an identity as an individual game, it's an individual game that exists within its franchise while some of the ps vita games are less individuated from other titles in their franchise. In that sense I think the complaints of FRANCHISES, is less about games existing within series' and more about an absence of meaningful differentiation between those games in a series'.

If that's the case the 3ds could both have more games that exist within an established series, and still hold more interesting titles that avoid being reiterations of the FRANCHISE. It's more an issue of overt commercial interests pushing out new titles supported by projected sales data, instead of a more subtle commercialism supported with creativity and projected sales data.

So I've sold quite a bit of my old games.

Should I get the 300 dollar 3g bundle with the 8 gig card? As it's still available on Amazon.

No, the 3g requires an expensive data plan and is near-useless. Even with the 8gig card it's not a good deal. Amazon was offering 4gig cards with the WiFi ones, not sure if they still are. But even the WiFi + 8 gig card is $10 cheaper.

For fighters, I really like GG Accent Core Plus ($9.99) and Power Stone Collection ($4.99 or $9.99, can't remember). Both of them work great on Vita with the control layout.

Ys Seven and Oath in Felghana are both pretty awesome, I think they're $14.99 a piece now.

Corpse Party [I remember you saying you liked Higurashi, you'll probably like this, too] ($20), Ultimate Ghosts n' Goblins ($10), Mega Man: Maverick Hunter X ($10), Ys: The Oath in Felghana or Ys 7 (both $15).

Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack is only $8. And it's an actual Vita game, not a PSP emulated game!

Ignore this. You should get the 3G version. Even if you don't ever use the 3G you can still use the GPS, which I understand is not available in the wifi-only version. And if you count the 8 Gig card as part of the purchase it's only a $20 difference.

Unless I'm wrong about the GPS, in which case do whatever!

G.Rev is making a new Senko no Ronde game for Vita (though they say they might decide not to use the SnR name). Very nice news.

Oh yeah, great game as I've mentioned more than once already. This would be my first pick if I had under $20 to spend on PSN games.

You're not wrong about the GPS - it's only available on the 3G version. Even so it's hardly worth anything. It lets your Maps app use GPS but the Maps app is awful and nearly worthless, and if you're not paying for a data plan then you're obviously near Wifi and it's easy enough to put in your location. Near also uses GPS to find your location, but again if you're not using the data plan you're just sitting somewhere with Wifi and Near gets a good enough estimate of your location anyway.

So it has a GPS yes, but if you're not using the 3G, the GPS has no purpose.

For what it's worth, Patapon 3 isn't currently compatible with Vita (including copying it from a PS3). Patapon 2 is though ($7.99). I'm not sure about the original, it might work if copied from another system but isn't available directly from the Vita online store.

I have now tried putting a whole lot of PSP games on my Vita, and here's a list of what did/didn't work. If a listed "working" game below isn't specifically listed on the PS Vita store, I loaded it by downloading on PS3 and copying over using the Vita's Content Manager app. 64 of the 70 games I tried work on Vita.

Confirmed working:
(64 working - 50 PSP games, plus 14 Neo Geo Station games)
Armored Core 3 Portable
Armored Core Last Raven Portable
Armored Core Silent Line Portable
Capcom Classics Collection: Remixed
Capcom Classics Collection: Reloaded
Capcom Puzzle World
Cho Aniki Zero
Cladun
Cladun 2
Corpse Party
Darkstalkers Chronicle

Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus
Kenka Bancho
Knights in the Nightmare
Mega Man Maverick Hunter X

Arctic Edge happens to be the game used to load the exploit (in the Vita's PSP emulator) that led to that HELLO WORLD on the actual day of the machine's Japanese launch. Somehow, only the US version is incompatible with Vita. Hmmmm..

I can confirm the 3rd Birthday works and benefits immensely from having a right-stick to look around with.

I just found out about the Arctic Edge exploit today. I actually tried to load the game from PS3 when I got my Vita on 2/22. IIRC, I got an error message when I tried to copy it to Vita. Went back now and looked and it's gone from the store while they fix it.

Unless you count games that can only be played on GPS enabled units, such as the currently Japan-only Monster Radar and 't@g'. That would be the reason to care. If you're going to potentially be locked out of certain games or features because you chose to get a certain version of the system that's not ideal.

I actually agree that Powered Up is the better game, but Maverick Hunter X is the only one of the two that got a PSN release in US/EU and thus is more easily playable on a Vita. Powered Up did get a Japanese PSN release, but changing Vita regions/user accounts for downloaded games sounds like a huge hassle.

Maverick Hunter X is not a bad game if you like Mega Man though. Totally worth the $4.99 I paid for it (Capcom PSN 50% off sale last Summer), and the normal price of $9.99 isn't bad either.
