I am not surprised. It is something that works so well for what it demands you do. I find it interesting that people often consider video games under the lens of What does this let me do? instead of What does this require of me?

And not in such base observations as Super Hang-On 3D requires that you drive. One of my favourite things about Super Hang-On 3D is the amount of information you are required to parse at a given time. Youre required to prioritize information and input and make value judgements based on proximity, patterns, and a level of threat.

Turbo subtracts one degree of your turn. There is a significant challenge in weaving between other racers on a large turn.

Going uphill is a nightmare since it sacrifices your view of oncoming threats.

It is almost always better to lose speed and avoid a collision than it is to crash. There is a limit to how much you can slow once youre up to speed so you will never need to come up from 0 if you avoid crashing. People say the turbo is the most important but I would say that braking is. Even if you slow down to try avoiding an obstacle to no available, it is still preferable: The animation for the crash is extended based on the severity of the crash. In other words, the faster you are going when you fuck up the longer it takes before you are set back upon the track again.

Always turbo on straightaways if you have the speed to do so. Only turbo from the inside of a turn. Since you lose a degree of turning you will be moving toward the outside of the circle even if you have the circle pad at 3 or 9 O'clock.

I recall there being four degrees of turning:

12 = Neutral
1 or 11 = Gentle curve (good for corrections)
2 or 10 = Leaning turn (the average)
3 or 9 = Hang-On ! (Actually, it is called a hang-off but Yu Suzuki didnt know that until later)

The mark of worth for Super Hang-On 3D is that I havent played it for at least a month or more and yet it remains so vivid as all this.

I lost all my save data from my SD card getting corrupted and the thing that hit me the hardest was losing my high scores in Super Hang-On ;____;

I think that Hang-On really aptly describes the experience of playing the game, since it's presented as though you are a stationary object and the track is what moves. The struggle is in keeping that track beneath you, and not letting it get away to your right or left.

Amazing 2d fighter from Sega that has a rotating playfield ala 3d fighters except in 1993:

Makes me wish 3d tech never took off and everything was just Super Super Super Scaler forever.

Holy smokes.

How does the ground get done in super scaler games? I get it in Power Drift, SNES mode 7 makes sense to me, but I don't understand how it works in games like Out Run, Super Hang-on or Space Harrier.

Level with the reflective puddles is gorgeous.

Aesthetically it reminds me of Galaxy Fight. In some cool alternate universe Sunsoft and Sega to made a crossover fighting game with these two franchises.

This page kinda explains it (but needs some coding concepts behind).

Cool, thanks. I'm reading it in spurts. A little over my head, not something I can intuit the way I could mode 7, but I want to understand.

Isn't that what we call parallax scrolling, Takashi?

it's more of a raster effect, really. parallax scrolling is normally related to globally setting the position of individual image layers.

One of the first things I did in game maker was use object generators (shooters really) and gravity to make a rolling road that could depict hills and turns. The line segments for the sides of the road and the center dashed lines were pulled by gravity wells down and out so they appeared to be coming at you from a point in the distance. Moving the wells and or generators made the trajectory curve giving the illusion of the road rising or falling. I got bored figuring out math to use that to depict actual driving so that is as far as it got.

Are there any Mega CD games I should keep my eye out for while I'm in Japan? I kind of don't know where to start with it.

mega cd games~!

cyborg 009 - nice platformer with pretty fullscreen animated cutscenes between stages, using the same technique as the urusei yatsura mega cd game (which i haven't played since it seems to require japanese knowledge), yumimi mix and the saturn game dinosaur island, where the animation is done using the console's native graphics to their full extent, rather than pre-rendered fmv

bari-arm - nice looking hori shmup. iirc, it has pretty good music too

keio flying squadron - another hori shmup, well known for it's big, cartoony sprites

road avenger and time gal - essentially 80s action oavs with no dialogue and constant qtes. don't get cobra command/thunderstorm fx, though. it tries to add a shooting element to things and it doesn't really work

lords of thunder - easy shmup with added metal

mansion of hidden souls - more of a novelty than an actual good game, but if you want to spend an hour or so exploring a surprisingly atmospheric grainy fmv house inhabited by spooky talking butterflies, this is the game to go for

Compile's Shadowrun is neat. Totally different from the SNES and Genesis games.

I basically have an idea of what I should get if I see it in America, but here in Japan I'm pretty lost. So I'm mainly curious about obscure Japan only games.

Not sure if that was directed to me, but Shadowrun on Mega CD was Japan exclusive and even the last Mega CD release period. Despite the license I think it's pretty obscure.

Another cool Japan exclusive Mega CD game is The Ninja Warriors. Of course the game feels pretty dated now, and it won't support 3 monitors like the arcade original, but the soundtrack is literally the best and the Mega CD version has this wild arrange mode where you rescue members of Zuntata.

Wolf Team games are the only JP-only MegaCD thing that comes to mind. Not the best games, but very pretty/uncommon.
