HOLY SHIT
I finally beat the Asia course in Super Hang-On
That was 6 and a half minutes of hellacious heartmurder, my chest is still beating. So much adrenaline. It just happened. Ive been playing the game since it came out and I hadnt seen past the 5th extend on the stage so most of it was fresh and I was a machine. Wow. _________________

So that Sonic Lost World for 3DS/Wiiu sold for a combined total of 710,000 copies this year.
Guess we should expect more Sonic games? _________________

allensmithee, when Super Hang On came out on 3DS I watched trailers and gameplay videos and even arcade longplays and thought it looked dull as hell, but your video has convinced me otherwise! _________________ Drawing & writing, mostly. |

i was all "what, a new sanic kart? woah YEAH" - only to realize this is the old one.
Maybe it will be a bit like F-Zero GX - it'll take a few years until another game comes round that just gets everything right. _________________

Are you talking the time frame between F-Zero X (N64) to F-Zero GX (Cube)?
Does Sanic Kart 3 need to exist the issues with Sanic Kart 2? I thought SK2 got everything right already. _________________

nope
they need to fix up the physics so you don't randomly collide on polygon seams or get flipped upside down. there's no reason why the game just shouldn't have had more arcade-y physics (I'm loathe to use the word "simplistic", but that's where I'm going) instead of going with something that would work in much more realistic game
and I want 120/144 hz options in the PC version too

I was pretty sure they patched the seams, and the fact that it controls like Outrun is practically the best distinguishing characteristic vs Mario Kart (that and the fantastic course design)?
no argument re: TJ&E though |

the collision physics are still a sore point because they make it possible to go too fast when going down a jump, which is the last thing one should be concerned with playing this game.
(also collisions with other players but I'm more forgiving there because online)
I'm gonna play some of this now. _________________

Yeah I can't count how many times I've been hurled into the ceiling or something. I can't play real type racing games at all but I love how Sonic kart 2 and Outrun control and am at least competent with them. _________________

Yes. Playing GX back then, you realized what was missing to make the formula be near perfect.
And even then it wasn't all rosy right from the start either, it took some time to get the handling right, and the game got some early hate for that, but after people got used to it, it just felt <right>. Storymode though, well … yeaaaaah. There's still room for improvement.

No, I'm not talking about a sequel here, but rather how a (racing-) game that does everything alright seems only to come around after a drought. Maybe a SEGA GT? Oh who am I kidding, no need for even thinking about this for a second … _________________

I just played Transformed for the first time and I don't get it at all. There's hardly anything I'd call a corner and drifting seems unnecessary. I guess you just do it because you get a speed boost at the end like in Mario Kart?
Driving doesn't seem to require any finesse. I sure don't see OutRun2 or F-Zero GX in this. All I see is a dull Mario Kart clone.
Also Wreck it Ralph? Really? Way to date your game with a c-class Disney character.
That After Burner track was breathtaking though. |

it's definitely more of a Mario Kart that feels like an OutRun than an OutRun that feels like a Mario Kart, but it's also gorgeous, bright, has consistently exciting track design, is really challenging at higher levels (were you playing on A/S-class?), has plenty of Sega love letters (the House of the Dead track, Ryo, etc.), and has a PC version that allows 4-player local multiplayer at 1080p on a pretty midrange machine
so that's all pretty fantastic if you ask me. I speak as someone who always liked Mario Kart more than OutRun, but the last Mario Kart I really played a lot of was Double Dash, and this is leagues ahead. it's a delight, really. I can see not being into it after your first few minutes with it, but it's far from dull.
and hey, Wreck-It Ralph really isn't that bad at all. they have Football Manager and the TF2 guys on the PC version, even; they're just having fun. |

I'm not saying there's nothing to praise. The tracks look gorgeous, they're themed well, lots of SEGA nostalgia, lots of blue skies, lots of admirable things. But it all doesn't matter in the end. I can't enjoy racing games (yes, even kart racing games) if the driving mechanics aren't doing it for me.
Maybe I'll try to s-rank some races, but I don't see having much fun with it. Getting good doesn't seem to be about cornering, but min-maxing boosts and items. |

| fair enough! obviously any driving game that has boosts and items isn't going to be purely about cornering (well, that actually makes me wonder if you like Wipeout HD, because it comes down a little harder on the cornering side of things despite the presence of boosts and items), but as someone who isn't completely put off by those things I really do think this is the best-informed kart racer I've ever played by a decent margin, so good in fact that I don't see much value in evaluating it as a "kart racer" rather than one of the other sorts of arcadey racing games I like (F-Zero, Burnout, Wipeout) |

It didn't help Blinx 2 become a commercial success. Perhaps the market just wasn't ready. |

@Felix: I never played Wipeout. The F-Zeros have always left me satisfied on the futuristic racing front.

Sure. Maybe I'm asking too much. My litmus test for kart racing games is simple. If I'd enjoy playing time trial mode for hours on end, then the driving mechanics are solid enough on their own. After the F-Zero GX and OutRun2 comparisons I hoped that Transformed would pass.
I don't think this game is on the same level as SEGA's arcade racers. Not even close. I don't see it excelling at anything but being a giant heap of fan service.
The boating and flying parts are a nice gimmick, but again the handling lacks substance. The items are super boring. A whirlwind? Snowballs? A baseball glove? Coins instead of rings? Not tying themselves to the Sonic franchise gave them free reign on course and character designs, but now they couldn't find a theme for the items. The All-Star-Moves are cool and inject the characters with personality, but I'd like to see them take this further. Why not drop the generic items and focus entirely on character-specific abilities?
And of course we beat this horse to death already, but Sonic driving a vehicle is in itself a fundamentally retarded idea. Why isn't the Monkey Ball guy rolling around in his ball all the time? Why isn't the Jet Set Radio dude roller skating? They could do so much more if they wouldn't cling to karts. Maybe they're scared of Sonic R's legacy. Whatever.
Besides the lavish tracks, the game's lacking both mechanically and aesthetically. Maybe it's the best kart racer in years, I still don't think it's a great game. |

| I wouldn't compare Transformed to GX, fwiw. not sure who did. the items being boring is a legitimate and somewhat bewildering issue given how much care they paid to every other aspect of the presentation, but otherwise you seem like you're being really really critical! |

that's me, yes! Why? Well, there are some bits that seem to be lifted out of GX, especially one track with a flying segment added to it - and on S-class, it feels like GX, way too fast, a bit chaotic and bastards trying to shoot you down when you have the victory in sight. The only difference is that Sonic is more blueskies whereas GX feels more serious.
| 1CC wrote: |

Try seeing the brakes for what they are - a drift button, try to barrel roll after jumps, drift through corners like hell and unlock the different characters to see whether there is one that fits your needs. There are some segments, e.g. timed drifting within a small strip of the track, that could have been fun in GX (instead of the story mode, heh!), but the drifting physics weren't fit for this-
Chara-wise, I've started with BD Joe and did a major part of the early unlocking stuff with him, because I felt very comfortable with his more neutral style.
Later on I started to experiment alot, and it's probably a close call between Ulala, Nights, Tails, Alex Kiddo and BD Joe for MVP.
And, the most important bit - if there is <any> chance, play it co-op. Seriously, playing it alone is only half the fun. The unlocking/"story mode" stuff can be done with 2P, and it feels like this is the way it is supposed to be played. Still hard enough in the later stages, promised! _________________

Not to get off topic from Sanic Kart 2, but are there any good chip tunes albums made using the Megadrive's FM synth chip? _________________

Cool. I had Soundshock 2 already and listening to it was what made me start thinking about a Megadrive only album. I guess for good reason! _________________
