No, this isn't a spam bot posting. I'm set up at work right now so all I can listen to is MP3 files.

I have this view on piracy: if someone doesn't want me to listen to their stuff without paying for it, then I usually won't listen to it OR buy it! (the listening part excludes the radio and Napster)

But I find moderate enjoyment from free MP3s.

Does anyone know of some good bands or pages that just give their music away?

You can stream nearly every Dismemberment Plan full length from their website using realplayer.

Cheating a bit. But I am currently digging Project playlist.

http://www.projectplaylist.com/node/4253229

This would be my current play list but you can add to it up to 75 tracks. Of course if an MP3 goes down its a pain but theres usually plenty of mirrors.

http://www.radioblogclub.com/

Kind of sucks because you have to leave it open in its own window while the music is playing, and you can't actually download anything yourself unless you sign up (I guess).

That's less of a view on piracy, and more a view on capitalism.
How do you expect artists to earn money?

If they were truly artists then they wouldn't care if they were dirt poor or not.

http://music.genterist.net/ is pretty good. Not sure how it's done now, but the dudes who run it are crazy bandwidth leeches and don't serve their own music. So it's like double piracy. And a lot of the stuff on it doesn't get radio play so you won't hear much you're burnt out on.

ourmedia has both a ton of creative commons music and and a shitty "web 2.0"-style possessive pronoun in its name.

I was exaggerating. Usually I just listen to everything on Napster, its just kind of rare for me to actually buy a CD since I typically don't like music enough (although esoteric strange things I'll normally get). I just meant I don't try to find BS reasons why its like totally OK to download untold numbers of MP3s of stuff I don't own for forever because I "wouldn't have bought the CD anyway" or something. But I didn't want to simply say that because then I'd sound like a self-righteous asshole, and at least one person would respond with "Hey, stealing MP3s is OK and here's why blah blah blah blah."

Likewise, I like to give any two-bit band thats giving their music away at least a small chance. I just bought a CD from this band, which I guess means I supported the abuse of Capcom's intellectual property. The sample tracks are pretty nice; no word yet on if I'll ever receive the actual CD.

Free MP3s ... clearly you shall search not further and enjoy Susumu Hirasawa's free songs.

Additionally, not really free mp3s but WHAT a radio-station (live-stream needs real media-player).

Sunshine Live.
After some (uh, five? six?) years not listening radio anymore (well, let's say not feeling the urge to listen at, say, breakfast) I started to listen to broadcasts again. Thanks to SSLive .... that stations feels like a realworld "RISE FM" from GTA3. Just brilliant.

www.muzie.co.jp
It's got a ton of indie and amateur Japanese musicians. There's some really top-notch electronica artists on there and some decent pop and rock songs, too.

http://www.epitonic.com/ is great. It's setup is kind of innovative when you consider it's been around for many years, too.

www.quoteunquoterecords.com I will link these guys until I DIE. Bomb the Music Industry! is awesome. "Side Projects are never successful" might be the best song I've ever heard. The other bands on the label didn't do anything for me, but got to love the effort.

Broken Notes is a silent hill inspired music project. It's actually pretty good! Well most of it is. They have a few full albums up for free download.

Personally, I find the music to be garbage, but love reading the guy's lyrics. They come off less like verses and more like epithets that chain off of eachother.

"And even if you weren't fucking my ex-girlfriend, I would still owe you three thousand dollars."

That's a line from one of his "happiest" songs. I love that it is.

Even for people uninterested in shouty basement ska-punk, it's worth reading the lyric sheets and his motivations for writing the songs.
