Chemical capital of America. Where the grass is blue and the sky is green.
I do have a couple good memories there, but what the heck. _________________

I just watched Clerks II, which reminded me of this question I've had for ages.
I mean obviously I've seen countless movies which make fun of Jersey, and -- again from the movies -- it seems like a slightly run-down, boring suburb. But what's the difference with other suburbs in cities like Chicago, Atlanta, Philadelphia, etc. ?
I'd love to hear especially from people who live/have lived there. Also keep in mind that I am not from the States, and that I've never been to the east coast. |
Hey, I’ve lived there for most of my life; now that I’m sober and capable, I’ll be happy to tackle some of the issues discussed here, much as a native New Jerseyian would. As for the whole Kevin Smith thing, I mean, the movies really deal more with central jersey and the coast, both of which are as (but no more) boring than anywhere else, really (Jersey disposition aside.)
I don’t know anyone who relates to those movies in any way, however.

Living in New York's shadow makes everyone in north Jersey a poser (hey man, I'm a New Yorker too) or a stuck-up asshole (we're just as good as New Yorkers mothefucker!).
South Jersey is sort of like Maryland's Eastern Shore in that it's a sort of bizarre redneck subculture stuck inside sub-suburban retail hell. |
This is typical anti-jersey attitude that comes from most people out of Incest, Maryland or wherever the hell you hail from.
See, thankfully, you’re an idiot and nothing you’ve ever posted was insightful or interesting, otherwise I’d feel compelled to remark on this post further.

i think it might have a lot to do with the idea of Jersey's proximity to New York. a Klaus Nomi DVD i watched a month or two ago sort of stressed this stereotype a bit.
the idea being that while much of Europe, NY and the rest of the country was getting into Klaus, Bowie, the bizarre, rigid fashion, new wave and that kind of 80s chique, Jersey was embracing cheap beer and hair metal full on (which Klaus Nomi and his band found out firsthand when they opened for Twisted Sister).
but these are all extremes. |
Isfet you are wise and this is a strong point, but this doesn’t easily fall into the contemporary view of Jersey.
Joe can I borrow that DVD this summer?

New Jersey, the state where you can see just about anything if you stand on the roof of your car, but to get from here to there, you'll need to take the turnpike.
I'm not joking.
Also, if you need a good laugh, drive Route 4. There's a section towards the new york end where the highway is paved with the flattened corpses of a thousand squirrels.
Again, I'm not joking. |
You’re joking.
Well, you’re exaggerating.
And it’s no worse than anywhere else.

My extended family is from New Jersey. I've spent a bit of time there. There's nothing redeemable about New Jersey. The thing to do if you are in New Jersey is try to get to NYC, where enjoyable things happen sometimes.
Fuck New Jersey. |
haha. The smug arrogance of a southerner, spiting his stupid on jersey while the north can’t roll it’s eyes hard enough.

I'm not even going to try and defend this place. The region I live in (north and west) is actually pretty in places, but nevertheless mindnumbingly boring. The overall cost of living is damn near inexcusable. We are the densest fucking state in the nation. I'd move to the city, but I hate cities. Kind of in a quandary here. Being born in Jersey is kind of like being born into a trap. |
I'm nearly 24. I've only climbed out of that trap twice so far, and both times my leg got caught and I fell back in.
I don't believe there is any way to communicate what it means to spend your life in New Jersey to someone who has not. I don't even know how to answer the OP inside my own head. |
ok.

the impression I get is that new jersey is no better and no worse than any other place, but new yorkers are just more vocal about it sucking, since they're right next to it. since they get to pretend to be a cultural center, when everyone knows california's the only way, they yell about their neighbors.
this is what I think.
oh except for them not being a cultural center, I was kind of joking there.
also I know several nice people who come from new jersey. |

Yeah, I’m a Vegetarian and I never liked meatball subs when I wasn’t so.
New Jersey is a swell fucking place if you know what’s up and what ain’t. There’s a lot of pieces of shit that fall out of new jersey, but that’s fucking everywhere. The southerners are the worst. Having lived in West Virginia for a few months now, I get a lot of tongue-in-cheek chiding about it, which I don’t mind, but it’s those kids that are dead against the place for no good reason that bug me. Mostly because they’re from places like Rimjob, Kentucky and being 45 minutes outside of Manhattan is pretty much as underwhelming as their having a Kroger and a Wal-Mart within a ten minute drive.
In conclusion, I’ve put together a map of hypocrite-philistine states prone to badmouthing Jersey in mumbles while still being acrid shit themselves. Enjoy!

A little further northwest, actually.
Wilkes, thanks for the hostility. I don't know what DVD you are talking about, though.
I have actually spent quite a bit of time in New Jersey, and it really was a shithole. Not to mention, my parents lived there for oh 30 years or so before moving to Kentucky to get away from the rampant crime, noise, and garbage.
Wilkes, you really can't defend the Passaic River.

i went to high school with two of the kids who run clubitup.com (they have a yellow hummer with the website airbrushed on the side. there might also be flames.) its weird cause the one guy is still really huge (300lbs+) and all i can think of when i see his picture is an old image of him throwing up on the track because he wasn't very good at not puking.
i guess the moral of the story is if you quit the football team, you're going to be a fucking guido your whole life. (an egyptian guido, no less) even though they're all juicehead retards who only do curls and shave their chests and dress like gay dudes from 1995, there are some downsides as well.

if you found it to be a shit hole, you must have been staying in a shit hole part of jersey. and a "shithole" is in the eye of the beholder. I've never had trouble with crime, myself. I've had two guns pulled on me in New Jersey in all the years I've been there and I've already had one pulled on me in west virfuckinginia in the months I've been here.
and no one is going to defend the environment of Newark. I think most of the bad rep comes from Newark Int'l Airport being in Newark, which is just racked with the most vile, never-ending construction imaginable, so that's all everyone passing through sees.
and don't worry about the hostility, it's not really at you. |

Oh yeah, and most likely producers of strange smells in NYC. Twice last summer we got the distinct scent of cheap maple syrup wafting inexplicably over the city, and earlier this year it was the smell of natural gas one morning (or whatever it is they put in natural gas to make it smell like anything at all), which freaked people out cause they thought downtown was about to explode. _________________

Well, either one (and I split residence between them in my heart, though I actually live in NYC) is a totally different animal on the eastern side. They might be better off split apart vertically rather than horizontally, with a line right down the Cascades, but maybe they need those other halves for balance and a bit of a reality check. Portland remains my favorite city in the country, though I prefer the geography of western Washington. _________________

I've only been to Jersey specifically to go someplace in it a few times, otherwise I've mostly driven through on my way to other places. With the exception of a few industrial areas I've driven through, a lot of it (especially nw NJ) seemed very pretty. |
